1 Building Captain Floor Manager News Newsletter In an effort to provide information to our Building Captains/Floor Managers, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) has developed this newsletter. This newsletter will serve to provide safety information, training and highlights to the program. All newsletters, as well as forms, training and procedures will be available on the EH&S website Inspections conducted in July/August EH&S has been conducting building and lab inspections for safety. Reports are generated and sent to the Department or Shop where deficiencies are discovered. Work orders are then submitted to facilities either by EH&S or by the Department. Patterson Hall Cont. September/October 2014 Open ceiling panels. This is a fire code violation. Findings Patterson Hall Fire Extinguisher blocked and fire alarm pull station has materials in front of it. A clear pathway must be maintained for ease of access in emergencies. Frayed electrical cord. This cord need to be taken out of service and repaired or replaced. Missing sprinkler head ring. This is a fire code violation. Capped smoke detectors. Sometimes these are forgotten after shops and contractors finish their work. Call the workorder desk to have them removed. Exit sign obscured. This exit sign will need to be moved to a more obvious place. Missing sprinkler head ring. Clip left on fire sprinklerhead during instulation. This will prevent the sprinkler from working properly.

2 Tawanka Jim Thorpe Field House Cont Light tubes not properly stored. Fire extinguisher not mounted. Roos Field Open Holes in ceiling. Fire code violation. Electrical cord tripping hazard Damaged electrical cords that need to be taken out of service JGL Lift (used for filming football team) had damaged stickers (stickers must be readable) and missing manual (manual must be present at all times). Jim Thorpe Field House Expired 5 pound ABC Fire extinguisher in lower concession area. Frayed electrical cord to popcorn machine must be repaired. Fence partially blocking fire alarm pull station. Door alarm system open. Examination of alarm system indicated that the batteries were corroded, damaging the electronics. Perimeter fence along north end bleachers must be tightened. Fence is loose and someone could fall.

3 Science Building Science Building Cont Syringe needles left exposed. Safety hazard. Frayed electrical cord to plug strip. This must be disposed. Other strain damage below must be repaired. Blocked eyewash & shower station. Shower & eyewash stations must be available & accessible at all times. Cart is blocking the shower & small stand is blocking the eyewash station. Out of place ceiling tiles. Fire code violation. Chain should be here There is an eyewash station here somewhere. Eyewash station blocked by wall, making it inaccessible. Blocked shower Burned out Exit Sign. Where chain is Improperly secured cylinders Chain is connected to another cylinder. Not secure at all. Loose fixture. These need to remain flush with the wall. Missing plug plate.

4 Science Building Cont. Fuel Station cont. Improperly secured cylinders. Must be secured at upper 2/3 level. Fire hydrant obscured by brush and junk. These need to be visible and accessible for the fire department. Missing electrical box face panel. Fire and electrocution hazard. Emergency signage at pumps needs to be updated. Frayed electrical cord. This need to be taken out of service and repaired or replaced. Incidents Reported EH&S tracks incidents (injury, illness, property damage etc.) of employees, students and visitors. Incidents that occur in buildings as a result of a building issue will be included in the newsletter. There was one building related issue reported in the July/August period. A drying oven, in the Science Building caught fire, but was brought under control quickly. This oven is designed to dry plant material. It appears the thermostat was faulty. Fuel Station Gas Emergency shutoff obscured and blocked There have been several incident reports from different buildings of tape being placed over the door latch or strike to keep the door from closing and latching. Please check your doors to confirm they latch closed before you leave.

Fire Prevention Week (October 5-11, 2014) Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire - the two-day blaze that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 more homeless, and destroyed more than 17,000 buildings October 8-9, That tragedy inspired reform across America, spurring new fire safety codes and public awareness campaigns. Each October, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sponsors a fire prevention week campaign to highlight the importance of fire safety education. This year's campaign is "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives! Test Yours Every Month! While the Great Chicago Fire was the best-known blaze to start during this fiery two-day stretch, it wasn't the biggest. That distinction goes to the Peshtigo Fire, the most devastating forest fire in American history. The fire, which also occurred on October 8th, 1871, and roared through Northeast Wisconsin, burning down 16 towns, killing 1,152 people, and scorching 1.2 million acres before it ended.
