3 Crosby s Nurseries has been supplying the Garden Centre, Landscape and Local authority industries for over 70 years from our site in Timperley Cheshire. In that time the business has grown, developed and changed to keep pace with the demands of it s customers. We are a family business owned and run by Brian, Nigel and Martin Crosby. The Nursery is split between two sites within half a mile of each other, which in total has 4 acres of covered growing area. Production is as efficient as we can make it using automatic transplanting machines, drum seeders and boom irrigation systems to give a uniform, healthy finished product. Service is a key element of our business and we work closely with our customers to supply an on demand delivery system. Availability is sent out via fax or over the weekend or on request, an up to date copy can also be viewed and printed from the following web page. Deliveries are a minimum of two trolleys (144 D6 units) per delivery. The CC trolley we use for deliveries are in the CC system and will have the new RFDI chipped tag. Each of our lorries will have a chip scanner and only genuine chipped trollies will be exchanged. If you are not in the system please let us know so we can arrange a different method of exchange.

4 Quality is the most important aspect of our bedding plants and this is looked at in every process. We grow as many of our own plug plants as we can to ensure we have full control from an early stage. The plug plants are transplanted in peat based compost with enough slow release fertiliser for 3 to 4 months growth, this gives longer shelf life at the Garden Centre. For the past 8 years we have used compost with a 10% reduction of peat, we are constantly looking at this issue. Whilst many of the more popular bedding plants in the range seem to stay the same year on year, we are constantly updating varieties to take advantage of new breeding lines and developments. New lines this year include Primrose Zebra with a light blue stripped flower it stands out from the standard range of Pot Primrose. We are also introducing a product called Confetti Garden Trios to the 2lt pot range, these are a blend of three different plants which compliment each other to create a very effective display. Gaura Gaudi is a new 2 lt pot product with very good flowering impact sales potential. Page 15 Two new colours have been added to the Dahlia Dark Angel series we grew for the first time last spring. 5 Impatiens Over the last 5 years Impatiens have been increasingly effected by Downy Mildew with 2011 been the worst year so far. The diseases likes damp, humid conditions which were prevalent this year throughout May. If next years weather pattern is different and we get low humidity, dry days we may see few outbreaks of the disease but this can not be relied upon. With this in mind most of the major bedding growers in the UK are either not growing Impatiens altogether or drastically reducing their production. Although it is possible for us to grow a clean, healthy plant the Downy mildew spores are everywhere and infection and subsequent plant death are highly likely given the right conditions. We will be growing Impatiens this year but with a much smaller colour range and in reduced numbers. Once delivered and signed for we can not take any responsibility for subsequent infection. One of the product we are looking at to replace some of the production is New Guinea Impatien Divine (pictured below). Downy Mildew does not effect New Guinea imps. With 3 mixes and 7 separate colours they do offer a good range. The cost of seed and plugs is higher and production time is also longer which will make these a higher value item and not something we could sell at our standard D6 price. We will also be increasing our production of Begonia and Geranium to help fill the gap.
