Please step up and lend a hand. Emergency Preparedness We are still attempting to collect the information forms that were put in last month s Meadowlark. Please fill them out and return them to the office. The information on these forms could save your life in event of a catastrophic emergency. Also the Emergency Preparedness team is always looking for volunteers. Perhaps you have training in some area that could be passed along to others. LOST ITEM From Susan Molin #398: On Monday, 6/19, a plastic hinge lidded garbage can was removed from the residence at 398 Dungeness Meadows. It has a yard waste decal on its side and/or covered up by white stickers. There may have been some confusion because a sign stating "trash" was attached to it. That was to indicate that trash was inside. Which it was. If anyone sees this, please return it no questions asked. Thank you. ACTIVITY GROUP The Youth Group is having an Activity Night on June 28 th. A Yipee School is Out pizza party. The kids have requested a showing of the movie Moana. Plans for the 4 th of July parade will be discussed also. Everyone please check out the 4 th of July flier attached. Kids we will have a decoration get together on July 3 rd at 4 pm at the clubouse parking lot. Bring your bike to decorate. Parents we could use some decorating supplies. Red, White and Blue, paper, ribbon, streamers. Let s make the Fourth of July parade a big success. I am taking menu suggestions for an August Adult Dinner. Give me some suggestions. Someone asked for more Italian. Please let me know what you think would be good. GOLF 3

4 The Tues and Saturday CO-ED golf game is on. This game starts at 1pm. You do not have to be a good golfer; you do need to enjoy a good laugh. WANTED: Several Adult Coed Poker Players to fill our two tables on Friday evenings in the clubhouse. Please call Bill at for details. Come out and join the fun. Kids Corner Summer is here and we hope to have lots of kid s activities. There is a lot to do here, the pool, Volley ball, badminton. We would like to schedule some extra crafting sessions. Let s paint some rocks and place them where people will find them. The kids are also planning a Car Wash fundraiser for August. Get your car vacuumed and washed and have a taco in a bag for lunch while you wait. We will let you know when we set the date. It will be a fun experience for everybody and the funds will finance the kid s activities through the winter. ATTENTION 4

6 Growing in Dungeness Meadows By Amanda TLC for your Rhododendrons Now that our Rhododendrons have graced us with their color all spring, it s time to give them some tender loving care. Deadhead Deadheading, the removal of spent flowers from the bush, isn t essential but it tidies up your Rhodies appearance, helps prevent insect infestations and increases flower production in the coming growing season To deadhead, grab the spent blossom between your thumb and index finger. Pinch or snap off the flower head or cut with sharp, sanitized hand-held pruning shears. Wear thin gloves if you have the variety of Rhododendrons that are sticky, but bare hands make it easier to snap the stem more precisely. At the base of the flower stem there is a set of unopened flower buds. Take care not to injure or snap off these buds. Healthy deadheaded blossoms can be composted or left on the ground beneath the plant. Diseased buds should be removed from the area and destroyed, not composted. Prune, Fertilize and Mulch Remove dead, diseased or damaged branches anytime. Pruning to shape or maintain the shrub should be done now. Oregon State University Extension recommends that pruning be done soon after flowering, but not past mid-summer. Rhodies growing in slightly acidic soil don t need a lot of fertilizer. A low alkaline, or organic fertilizer may be gently applied to the soil around the drip line of the bush before mid-july. Pruning and fertilizing will encourage tender new growth that may suffer winter damage if they haven t had time to harden off before cold weather sets in. A thick organic mulch protects shallow roots, reduces weeds and keeps soil moist. Keep woody mulches away from the trunk of the tree to prevent weevil damage and root rot.
