POT SIZES In the hanging pot class, we don t use the British Fuchsia Society 25cm pot but continue to specify up to a 22cm size (effectively a 20cm or 8 hanging pot when purchasing). This smaller size fits the stand we supply. Imperial pot sizes are quoted as an aid to exhibitors but metric sizes on the foot of pots are the correct ones to follow. Pot sizes stated in this schedule are the MAXIMUM permitted size. Smaller pots may be used, unless the schedule states otherwise Metric pot sizes and their equivalent imperial sizes. 9cm: 3½" 12cm: 4¾" 13cm: 5" 15cm: 6" 22cm: 8.5" MEMBERSHIP Membership for 2016 is 12 pa and runs from 1 January to 31 December. It gives free admission to the monthly talks and two annual shows. First time members, who join later in the year, will pay a proportionate amount, and junior members pay half the rate. 6 BRITISH FUCHSIA SOCIETY SHOW DEFINITIONS A. Bush: a bush is a plant which must be seen to have been developed on a single stem not exceeding 38mm. The entire plant should be covered with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower. The plant should present a balanced shape when viewed from all sides. B. Shrub: a shrub is an exhibit with more than one shoot emerging from below compost level. It can also be grown from more than one plant. The entire shrub should be covered with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower. The exhibit should present a balanced shape when viewed from all sides. C. A full basket is to be top planted only and may contain more than one plant. Growth should fill the centre and top of the basket and surge over the edge in a sweeping cascade. Uniform growth with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower should continue to at least the depth of the basket, and be evenly distributed from the crown to the end of the trailing growths. The exhibit is to be viewed from the top and sides when displayed in an elevated position. The container should not be visible when viewed at eye level. A full basket must be commercially manufactured as a hanging basket. The top must be circular in shape, should be not less than 30cm and not exceed 41cm in diameter. The maximum depth allowed is 25cm. NB Full baskets may have flat bottoms, solid bases and straight sides. A half basket is to be top planted only and may contain more than one plant. Growth should fill the centre and top of the half basket and surge over the edge in a sweeping cascade. Uniform growth with an abundance of healthy foliage and flower should continue to at least the depth of the basket, and be evenly distributed from the distributed from the crown to the end of the trailing growths. A framework, however fashioned, is not allowed for bush, shrub, baskets (full or half), hanging pots, small pot culture baskets and all standards. A framework, however, may be used to support or train other shapes eg fan, espalier, ring etc - as in the current Rule Book classification. E. A full standard must be not less than 76cm (30") nor more than 107cm (42"). A half standard must be not less than 46cm (18") nor more than 76cm (30"). A quarter standard must be not less than 25cm (10") nor more than 46cm (18"). A mini standard must be not less than 15cm (6") nor more than 25cm (10"). 5

7 These dimensions refer to the length of clear stem between compost level and the underside of the first branch. F. A decorative standard (known also as a multi-trunk standard) must be developed from several stems or plants. The length of the stems, from compost level to the first branch forming the head, must not be less than 25cm nor more than 107cm. G. Plant pots: the vertical height of pots up to 18cm (7") must not exceed the diameter at the top and the pot must have a distinct taper. The diameter of a pot is the inside measurement as near to the top as possible. The colour of the pots must be terracotta. The more straight sided "container" or "shrub" pots are excluded. NB: the vertical height of pots over 18cm (7") diameter may exceed the diameter at the top, and may have a rolled top rim and/or surface decorations. H. Hanging pots: a hanging pot must be one which is commercially manufactured as a hanging pot. Ordinary plant pots with hangers are prohibited. Any colour of hanging pot may be used. NB: hanging pots must have solid sides. I. Triphyllas: only plants on the BFS Triphylla List may be shown and must be correctly named. NB: any other triphylla type not included in the above list may be exhibited in either the singles classes or the more unusual cultivar class. J Encliandra types are those sometimes referred to as breviflorae and have their origins in the Section Encliandra. Encliandra types cannot be exhibited in species classes. K. A fuchsia flower normally has four sepals. It is, however, appreciated that some cultivars habitually throw blooms with more than or less than four sepals. This must not be treated as a cultural fault. NB: flowers in flower board classes must have four sepals. L. A single flower has four petals. A semi-double flower has five to seven petals, and a double flower has eight or more petals. NB: semi-double flowered fuchsias must be exhibited in single flowered or any cultivar classes. M. Small pot culture allows any type of growth other than bush, shrub, or single stemmed standard eg basket, espalier, fan, pillar, conical, pyramid, ring, decorative standard or any other shape. Pot size for all classes except baskets should not exceed 13cm (5"). Baskets should not exceed 15cm (6") at the top, be circular in shape, of open mesh construction and may have a flat bottom. NB: in this class exhibitors' own stands are permitted but these must not be taken into account when judging. 6

8 RULES The show will be judged in accordance with the current BFS Rule Book and the judge's decision shall be final. Members may exhibit in every class in the show, non-members in the Open Classes. One entry, per exhibitor, per class is allowed. A Beginner is an exhibitor who has not won a First, Second or Third Prize at any previous show. A Novice is an exhibitor who has not won a First Prize, with the exception of a Beginners' Class at any previous show. All exhibits should be correctly named but errors in naming will not disqualify an exhibit. All plants must have been grown by the exhibitor and have been in his or her possession for at least three months. Plants should be free of pests and diseases. Only standard, tapered pots may be used and must be terracotta in colour (except for hanging pot class and novelty class). Terracotta-coloured saucers are provided but exhibitors may use their own. Exhibits may be staged between 6pm and 8pm on Friday and 8am and 10am on the Saturday of the show. The hall will be cleared of competitors at 10am so that judging may commence at 10.15am. No persons other than stewards or officials of the show will be permitted to remain in the hall during judging. Points, where awarded, will be 3 for 1 st, 2 for 2 nd, 1 for 3 rd. In the event of a tie on points, the exhibitor with the most first prizes will be declared the winner. No points are awarded for the non-competitive, hospice class. Prize cards are awarded for 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd places in competitive classes. The BFS Blue Rosette is awarded at the judge's discretion. Trophies may be held for up to one year and should be returned, clean and in good condition, in time for the next show. Crested spoons need not be returned. Any contingency not covered by these rules shall be dealt with by the committee whose decision is final. 7
