The tests are for Cymbidium Mosaic Virus (CymMV) and Odontoglossum Ringspot Virus (ORSV), which is also known as Tobacco Mosaic Virus Orchid Strain (TMV-O). The cost for this double test is $5 with results available in minutes. Be sure that your leaf sample is correctly harvested and safely sealed in a Ziploc bag when presenting it for testing. From the CSA President: Along with heading up the amazing GCCG, last March I became president of the Cymbidium Society of America. I knew at the time that I would be undertaking a huge task but with the help of a very strong CSA Board of Directors and some sage advise from people I respect, I believe that we are headed in the right direction. Just to keep you updated: our CSA Journal editor Heidi is back on the job after a difficult cancer recovery. Her role in CSA is critical and we learned that we will need to add support positions to her job in the future. The next Journal has been printed and is in the process of being sent out. I appreciate everyone's patience with this! We are also rolling out a new format for the CSA website which means you can now renew online All of us need to renew by the end of December if you have not done so for this calendar year. Please use the new website or see David Pyles at our next meeting forms will be available, or send your dues to him at 407 Timberhead Lane, Foster City, Ca For information: davidbpyles@gmail.com CSA is critical to our individual organizations. They provide support, insurance for our meetings and judging at our shows. Most clubs have CSA membership attached to the regular club membership. We do not. That said, I feel strongly that it is our collective and individual responsibility to provide our support through our memberships! PLEASE JOIN NOW! New GCCA Members: Welcome to two new members and a Lifetime member: Betty Chinn El Sobrante, CA bchinn6531@aol.com June Huey Alameda, CA jhuey208@att.net Refreshments for the November Meeting: Be sure to pick up your free raffle tickets for providing refreshments. No need to sign up, just bring your refreshments. Five free raffle tickets will be given to each person who provides refreshments. Please ensure that all items are labeled with the name of the provider so that Tony can record the names for the next newsletter and provide the 5 free raffle tickets prior to the draw. Refreshment Thank you from Tony and Doug to the good folks who kept us filled at the last meeting. Carol Armendariz Gloria Bygdnes Weegie Caughlan Annie Green Marron Honigman Florence Inserto Nan Jan Mel/Val Jones Frances Richardson Kalan Toy Casa de las Orquideas Divisions: On October 21st, Casa de las Orquideas released their Annual Fall Division List. This list was sent out to all the GCCG members on . This annual sale is eagerly looked forward to by many serious GCCG members as it is a release of seldom available cultivars from one of the last Cymbidium hybridizers in the US at wholesale prices. The list may be viewed at If you are thinking about ordering, DO NOT WAIT. Many select divisions are already gone! Arrangements are being made to bring GCCG orders up to the Bay Area. Check with Karl when you place your order at or casa@orquideas.com or call Karl or Miki Batchman at (858)

3 2014 Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers Annual Collector's Auction The GCCG annual fund-raising Collectors' Auction will be held January 17th, 2014, with an entry deadline of 10:00 PM, Friday, December 20th, 2013 if the total number of plants entered for the auction has not reached the limit of 200 prior to that date. Plant lists may be handed to the auction coordinator, Carl Jukkola at the November GCCG meeting, sent to Carl at or mailed to 1015 Windermere Ave. Menlo Park, CA Lists should include as much information as possible for each entry, including full name and parentage, type (Standard, Novelty, Miniature, or species), habit (upright, arching, or pendulous), color, size of plant (specifically the number of BBs and green bulbs), size of pot, and any other information available. Plants must be healthy, well established and disease free (see rule 12). A PDF and editable MS-WORD entry form is attached to this Newsletter. This year, with our emphasis as always on better growing, including eliminating virus from all collections, we are asking all sellers to test and clear all the plants they submit for sale. In order to claim your plant as 'CymMV/ORSV Negative', you must have successfully tested your plant within 3 months of the time of submission and received virus negative test results from using Agdia's self-test kit or the services of Critter Creek Laboratory. If you require virus testing assistance, please contact Darrel bacyms@yahoo.com or Carl Jukkola at cjukkola@aol.com. As in the past, all DONATED plants will be tested at club expense. Owners of sale plants will be responsible for reaching an acceptable accommodation with the buyers for any sales plant testing positive for virus within 7 days of the auction. Minimum bids may be stated, however Auction rule 11 described below will apply. It would be wise to be realistic in setting minimum bids. A "suggested value" is an alternative to stating a minimum bid but is not binding on the seller or the auctioneer. Successful bids and bidders will be tracked on a projector screen. Photos of the plants (if available) will also be projected on a screen as they are presented for auction. Payment to sellers and acknowledgement to donors will include a printout of each of their entries with the sales amount Auction Rules 1) Only members may enter sale plants. For the member sale plants that are auctioned, the club retains 25% of the proceeds, and the member receives the remaining 75%. 2) DONATED plants will be accepted from members and non-members. 3) All plants must be pre-entered by December 20th, 2013, complete with all known information. 4) Auction entries will be limited to 200 items/plants, except that all entries from the same seller/donor included in the same plant submission as the 200th plant will be accepted. 5) No entries will be accepted after the limit or deadline has been reached, whichever occurs first. 6) A member may enter no more than 10 plants for sale. 7) A limit of 10 plants per donor is requested. 8) It is suggested that all sellers consider donating at least 1-2 plants when entering 10 plants for sale. 9) An individual seller/donor may not enter more than two divisions of the same plant in the auction. 10) No plants will be allowed into the building the night of the auction unless pre-entered or as a preapproved substitute for one damaged. 11) If a plant carrying a minimum bid does not sell at the declared minimum bid, the seller will still be responsible for paying the club 25% of the listed minimum bid unless the auctioneer is notified before the start of the auction the seller agrees to reverse bidding if the minimum bid has not reached. 12) Plants must be healthy, well established and disease free or they will be withdrawn from the auction prior to the start of bidding at the owners' or club's discretion. 13) Bidders may not check out until the last plant is auctioned and the auction concluded. Receipts to bidders will include a printout of their successful bids.

4 Guidelines for photo submission Photos are definitely encouraged and will be posted with the plant on auction night. Please all photos as attachments to Darrel Wong at 1. Use photo image formats of bmp, gif, jpg, jpeg, or png. 2. It is acceptable to insert watermarks. 3. Do not insert the plant's name/variety into the photo image. 4. Identify each attached image file (photo) by properly assigning the plant's name/variety as the file name. 5. If you are not the legal owner of the photo, obtain permission before use. Credit should go to the owner by inserting a title (i.e. Photo Courtesy of xxxx) into the photo. 6. Your photos will be added to photo-bucket within 7 days of submission. The photo-bucket may be viewed at: 2014 Auction Photo Bucket Plant Judging: The CSA will be judging Cymbidiums, Paphiopedilums, and Phragmipediums at our regular monthly meetings on request. To have a plant judged, call David Pyles at at least one day in advance, to ensure that the CSA judges know that plants will be submitted for judging. Plant entry is between 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM the evening of the meeting. Clerks can advise you in filling out the plant entry form on your arrival. If you have a plant that will be ready for judging at another Branch meeting, please contact David Pyles for more information. The AOS judges all genera of orchids in San Francisco at the SF County Fair Building (Hall of Flowers) in Golden Gate Park on the first Tuesday, and in Oakland at the Lakeside Garden Center on the third Monday, of each month. For either judging, plants need to be submitted to the clerks between 6:15 PM and 7:00 PM. For more information contact Sylvia Darr at CSA and/or AOS judging takes place at most of the local shows. Contact the show organizers for specifics regarding plant entry for judging. Upcoming Events: November 7, Greenhouse Orchid Moving Sale from Botanico: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and by appointment, Half Moon Bay. There may possibly be two more Saturday sales in early December. All plants priced to sell and discounts for quantity. Cymbidiums, other orchid genera and non-orchid genera are for sale. For more Information call Dean Haas Directions: For those who have visited Dennis Olivas' greenhouse, accessed by a service road with no name off Hwy 92, Dean greenhouse is next door. Blooming time will be perfect for Chinese New Year. We expect lots of awards on this cross! We expect tall flower spikes with 16 to 20 flowers per spike. Blooming time will be midseason. We have high award expectations for this cross of two highly awarded parents! (7) Vanguard 'Mas Beauty' x Chestnut Village 'Geyserland' These seedlings will be robust growing and very floriferous. 6 Cymbidium Seedlings and their history with Gold Coast The opportunity for GCCG members to purchase high quality seedlings from well-known, commercial growers was at the core of our success when Gold Coast was founded. Each year a very knowledgeable member selects seedlings with the highest potential from top commercial hybridizers, to bring to the members the opportunity to buy the best-of-he-best crosses of the year at greenhouse prices. As millions of common mericlones from Holland and Thailand, usually without names, inundate the box stores at cheap prices, more and more novice growers are being trained to "buy in bloom", even though the quality is generally inferior to most of the hybrids produced by the only two retail Cymbidium hybridizers remaining in California - Hatfield Orchids and Casa de las Orquideas. It is understandable that many novice growers may feel they cannot bring the small seedlings to bloom. But when you consider that it may take as long to bloom out a Back Bulb as it does a 12" seeding (the size offered to the membership) what have you got to lose by trying one? Think of the pleasure you will get when you bloom out a one-of-a-kind plant. Pictures of the parents are a good guide to what you may get in color. Form may vary but you will have a new plant for the same price as a BB and something no one else has. Buying seedlings should not replace buying BBs, as the purchase of a BB from a rare or unusual plant is the least expensive way of getting a piece of an expensive or highly awarded larger plant that one could not afford otherwise. But when it comes to adding a small plant to a collection for $10.00 or less, a quality seedling should top the wish list. As a rule of thumb, a complete collection should always include Cymbidiums in three different growing stages: Mature blooming size plants, special new BBs and seedlings of various sizes. What is in your collection?
