2 Helpful tips on Preserving Our Resources Think Ahead Plan and design your garden in detail including the type and number of plants you need. Keep those that have the same water requirements together and pay attention to light requirements as well. Take Care A well planned and properly maintained garden results in healthy plants that are less prone to disease and pests. Timely pruning, mowing and pest control using environmentally-conscientious methods are the best way for a low maintenance, low-waste garden. Mulch better Add a layer of mulch around the base of plants to keep roots cool and reduce evapotranspiration while keeping weeds at bay. Suitable mulches include decorative stone or pea gravel, or organics such as cedar chips or bark mulch which decompose and add nutrients to the soil. Watering: Keep it on the low-down Avoid systems that spray water high into the air before reaching plants. Much of the water may evaporate before it reaches your plantings. Use soaker hoses, bubbler emitters or rotary sprinklers instead. Measure the output of your watering system so you can determine how long you need to water each area of your garden. 6 Short on time? Custom Design Service The popularity of container gardening or potscaping as it has come to be known, is not surprising. Requiring very little space and maintenance, containers have the same elements as a garden: colour, form, fragrance and texture. Versatility also plays a part in container gardening s appeal; using completely different plants in each season will offer impact throughout the year. Sheridan s talented designers will take you through the process and present you with unique seasonal combinations. 4 Visit our Events Section on-line for our Decorating Workshop schedule!

7 Move over Dracaena and make room for Fountain Grass No reason to use the ubiquitous Dracaena when there are so many other interesting annuals available on the market that provide height, form, colour and texture; a purple fountain grass, tall and richly hued, looks exquisite on its own or planted with a companion; sweet potato vine, with its dense and trailing chartreuse leaves is fantastic in hanging baskets, window boxes and containers, in sun or shade. If flowers are your passion, select from hundreds of different varieties that we carry: from butter yellow begonias, to splashy double pink impatiens, to the luminous white Sunscape Daisy. The possibilities for your container garden are endless. If only all our decisions were this fun! Plant Combinations Planting up a container with one variety is like dressing in one colour; it looks fine and may even make an impact, but using a number of different colours that compliment each other makes for a more interesting statement. Once you have determined where you want your container, decide its function privacy, colour, fragrance and its exposure: full sun, part-shade, full shade. Now your choices have narrowed slightly and you can start playing with colour and texture, using plants that compliment each other. A marbled Coleus plays off of a rich burgundy Dahlia whose yellow centre welcomes a planting of cheerful and long-lasting Bidens. Selecting Your Container Get as creative as you can when selecting a container, but do allow at least 3 and ensure sufficient drainage holes to allow water to drain away from the roots. Groupings of containers with evergreen trees or shrubs or large perennials can define a space, act as a wall and provide privacy. Remember that smaller containers dry out faster and require more frequent watering than large, so consider adding Soil Sponge, a natural soil supplement that slowly releases moisture, letting you lengthen the time between waterings by up to a week. All-Season Gardening Let the experts at Sheridan Nurseries help you create a container garden masterpiece for every season. All-Season gardening inspiration all year long! Let our talented experts inspire and help you create your own container, centrepiece or floral arrangement. 5
