2 2017 Cultivar Trials of Bedding Plants Barbara A. Laschkewitsch, M.S. Trial Garden Coordinator Introduction The Plant Sciences Department at NDSU conducted performance trials on over 200 annual bedding plants during the 2017 growing season. The bedding plant trials are located in the NDSU Horticulture Demonstration and Research plots on the corner of 18 th Street and 12 th Avenue North in Fargo, ND. The Horticulture Demonstration and Research plots are for education, research and display purposes. The plots consist of the bedding plant trials and many perennial displays including daylilies, irises, perennial ornamental grasses, Perennial Plant Association (PPA) plants of the year, a xeriscape garden and a meadow garden. A shade garden with various annuals and perennials continues to expand in a small poplar/pine grove. The bedding plant trial is an official display garden of All-America Selections. The daylily area is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society and houses almost 2,000 cultivars of daylilies, most of which are considered historic (pre-1980 releases). The beds are open to the public throughout the growing season and guided tours are available upon request. Contact Information is included on page 4. Site Information The Horticulture Demonstration and Research Gardens are located at the corner of 18 th Street and 12 th Avenue North on the west side of the NDSU campus in Fargo. The majority of the annual beds are raised beds with a sandy loam-compost mix of soil. They are in full sun and receive drip irrigation using t-tape. 2 Two shade beds for annuals are in the poplar/pine grove that is also being planted with shade perennials. The wheelchair accessible gardens are in full sun and contain the sandy loam-compost mix. Culture The plants for the bedding plant trials are seeded in the horticulture and forestry greenhouse on the NDSU campus from January through April. When at the proper stage, seedlings are transplanted into cell packs containing a peat-based growing medium and finished in the greenhouses. Six to of each cultivar were planted into the beds May 31- June 2. If the cultivar was a mix or an official entry, were used; all other cultivars were 6. Hand weeding was done on a weekly basis. Razor Pro (glyphosate) 1 was used as a spot treatment on perennial weeds. Miracle-Gro Liquafeed was foliarly applied June 21, July 21 and August 24. Water was applied through drip irrigation (full sun beds) and overhead irrigation (shade beds). A light frost (29 F) was recorded the morning of October 10. Plants were removed from the beds and disposed of starting October Disclaimer-Reference to commercial products or trade names is made with the understanding that no discrimination is intended and no endorsement by NDSU or the North Dakota Agriculture Experiment Station is implied.

3 Weather Fargo temperatures for June, July and September were slightly warmer than the 30 year average while August was slightly below average. June-August precipitation was below average while September was above average (Table 1). Table and June-September Average Temperature and Precipitation for Fargo, ND. 2 Average Temperature ( F) Precipitation (inches) Avg June July August September Problems Aphids were a problem on the ornamental peppers but no treatment was used. Aster yellows showed up in various genera starting in August while white mold started showing up in the Zinnia late in August. Infected plants were removed and disposed of. Liquid Fence was applied early in the season to discourage jackrabbit browsing. Events The NDSU Yard and Garden Field Day was held July 25 from 4:00-7:00 pm. The event included tours of the gardens (bedding plant trials, perennials, and daylily gardens), as well as raspberry, grape and vegetable research trials. A campus tree walk was also featured. 2 Temperature and precipitation data are from NDAWN and the National Climatic Data Center. 3 All-America Selections The NDSU trial garden is an official display garden of All-America Selections (AAS). AAS was founded in 1932 as a way for home gardeners to learn about new and improved varieties of flowers and vegetables. The red, white and blue AAS logo found on seed packets, in catalogs, and in garden articles usually indicates superior cultivars that have been tested in a variety of locations across the United States and Canada. The following AAS winners from the previous 5 years were grown in 2017: 2013: Canna South Pacific Scarlet Echinacea Cheyenne Spirit Pelargonium (Geranium) Pinto Premium White to Red Zinnia Profusion Double Deep Salmon Zinnia Profusion Double Hot Cherry 2014: Gaura Sparkle White New Guinea Impatiens Florific Sweet Orange Ornamental Pepper NuMex Easter Osteospermum Akila Daisy White Petunia African Sunset Penstemon Arabesque Red 2015: Dianthus Jolt Pink Impatiens hybrid Bounce Pink Flame Impatiens hybrid Sunpatiens Spreading Shell Pink Petunia Tidal Wave Red Velour Petunia Trilogy Red Salvia Summer Jewel White 2016: Ornamental Pepper Black Hawk Pelargonium (Geranium) Brocade Cherry Night Pelargonium (Geranium) Brocade Fire Salvia Summer Jewel Lavender 2017: Celosia Asian Garden Dianthus Supra Pink Pelargonium (Geranium) Calliope Medium Dark Red Petunia Evening Scentsation Penstemon Twizzle Purple Verbena EnduraScape Pink Bicolor Vinca Mega Bloom Orchid Halo Vinca Mega Bloom Pink Halo Zinnia Profusion Red

4 Evaluations Plants were evaluated twice over the growing season for height, spread, vigor, uniformity of size and bloom, and overall appearance. The first evaluation was July 26; the second was September 6 and 7. Plants were measured in inches and rated on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) on bloom, uniformity and vigor. Top performers received all 5 s during either one of the evaluation times. Star performers received all 5 s for both evaluations and are designated on the report table with stars. The report table, found on pages 5-57, is alphabetical by scientific name and also includes the seed or plant source which is listed directly under the scientific name. A more detailed seed/plant source list is on page Star Performers (listed alphabetically by Genus): Alternanthera Purple Prince Amaranthus caudatus-love-lies-bleeding A. caudatus Pony Tails Begonia benariensis Whopper Experimental B. benariensis Whopper Rose Bronze Leaf Improved Berlandiera lyrata-chocolate Flower Brassica oleracea Glamour Red Celosia argentea Ruby Parfait Celosia plumosa Arrabona Red Cleome Queen Mix Cuphea Sriracha Rose Eragrostis Wind Dancer Euphorbia Glamour Euphorbia Glitz Gaura Sparkle White Lobularia Royal Carpet Monarda Bergamo Pennisetum glaucum Copper Prince Pennisetum villosum-feathertop Petunia Blueberry Lime Jam Mix Petunia Horizon Yellow Petunia Opera Supreme Pink Morn Petunia Shock Wave Coral Crush 4 Petunia Tickled Pink Petunia Tidal Wave Red Velour Salvia farinacea Fairy Queen Tagetes (Marigold) Moonsong Deep Orange Verbena bonariensis (Tall Verbena) V. peruviana Endurascape Pink Bicolor Zinnia elegans Queen Lime with Blush Z. elegans Queen Red Lime Z. scabiosa Zinderella Peach Acknowledgements Many thanks go to supporters of the 2017 gardens: All-America Selections; Ball Seed Company; and PanAmerican Seed.
