8 Succulents Perennials Annuals Succulents are a group of plants with thick, fleshy stems, leaves or roots designed to hold water. They are easy care and drought tolerant and come in a variety of forms, textures and colors. They're adapted to survive in dry conditions and don't need much supplemental water. In Florida's rainy, humid climate, they do best in containers. Most varieties need at least half a day to a full day of sunlight. Best succulents for Florida: Carrion or Starfish Flower (Stapelia gigantea), Jelly Bean Plant (Sedum sp.), Flapjack Plant (Kalanchoe thyrsiflora), Coppertone (Sedum nussbaumeranum), Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg', A perennial can live many years depending on the conditions such as cold and water. They go through cycles of bloom and flower less in the cooler months. Some need a regular trim. The best time to trim is after the plant has completed a bloom cycle which promotes new growth and new flowers. Research a chosen perennial to know how to best care for it. Examples: Blue Daze, Bulbine, Bush Daisy, Buttercup, Cat's Whiskers, Pentas, Society Garlic, Vinca. Dracenas, Lillies, Bromeliads also fall into the perennial category. Annuals provide a burst of color to any Florida landscape. Learning when to plant them is the tricky part. Florida annuals thrive in 2 seasons, winter and summer. Research a chosen annual to understand how it will best thrive.
