1 September 2008 Presidents Message Welcometoallofyoutothestartofour year.Thiswillbeaveryspecialyearas wewillcelebrateour50 th yearasanaauw Branch.Wewerecharteredasabranchin December,1958andwillmarktheeventthis yearwithaspecialcelebrationinearly December. TheBoardwillmeetonAugust26atwhich timewewillfinalizeplansforourmeeting scheduleandtheyear sactivities.weare lookingforwardtoseeingyouallatthefall KickoffmeetingonSeptember14(Note changefromoriginaldateofseptember7). InvitesomeonetoattendtheKickoffwithyou andintroducethemtoaauw.moredetailswill befoundelsewhereinfoliage. ThisyearAAUWhascommittedtothe Value Promise ByjoiningAAUW,webelongtoa communitythatbreaksthrougheducational andeconomicbarrierssothatallwomen haveafairchance.theaauwvaluepromise isourstatementofcommitmenttoourselves, asaauwmembers,andtothosewhowould joinouraauwcommunity,aboutthe essentialvalueofourmembership.the term value isusedwithtwomeanings. First,wearepromisinga valueon investment, areturnonyourinvestment financial,intellectual,emotional,and thetimeandenergyyouinvestinaauw. Thatis,yousupporttheorganization withyourmembership,andthe membershipasawhole(thecommunity ofaauw)pledgestoundertakethe endeavors(educationalprograms, advocacy,research,andtheintangiblesofour interpersonalrelationships)that break througheducationalandeconomicbarriers for women withyouandforyou. Second,theterm value identifiesaprinciple, anideal,anethicalposition,thatistobe understoodasasharedcommitmentofaauw membersthatspringsfromanunderstandingof andbeliefintheimportanceofa fairchancefor women thatmeanssomuchtoallofus. But,toyourhorror,youaretold thatyoucanonlyvoteinschoolboard elections.yourhusband,brother,son,or malefriendscouldvote,butnotyou. Priortothepassageofthe19 th Amendment in1920,that sthewaythingswerefor womeninwisconsin.believeitornot,this wasanimprovementoverthe1880law thatgavewomentherighttorunforschool board butnottovoteintheelection! Wehavecomealongway.Infact,inevery Presidentialelectionfrom1980to2004, womenhavebeenapowerfulforce.intheseelections,ahigherpercentageofwomenthanmen registered,andthenvoted.allwomendonotvotethesame,butdotendtovoteasabloc,andin that24yearperiod,tendedtovoteforthedemocraticcandidate.thismeansthatallsidesare nowlookingtocourtthevoteofwomen.thisgendergapgivesusthepowertoinfluence politicianstorespondtotheinterestsofwomenvoters. Wehaveachancetoprotecthard foughtgainsandmakeprogressonissueslikeeducation, health,retirementissues,andnationalsecurity,tonamejustafew.asindividualsandasan organization,wecanencourageregisteredwomenvoterstogettothepollsandcasttheir ballots.wecanhelppotentialvoterstoregister.wecanbeinformedvotersandhelpothersto findlegitimateinformationontheissues.
