1 New labelling of gluten at Sainsbury s Due to changes in food labelling law, we are required to change our allergy labelling and allergy advice boxes. Starting from September 2013, all prepared foods made with ingredients containing gluten will have the gluten-containing grain highlighted in bold in the ingredients list. If the product contains gluten in the recipe, we will state the name of the gluten-containing grain in the ingredients list (e.g. wheat, rye, barley, oat, spelt, kamut ), but the word gluten will not appear in the ingredients list. Where we believe that there is a real risk of a product having come into contact with gluten, therefore making it unsuitable for coeliacs, we will use the following phrase in the allergy advice panel; Not suitable for customers with an allergy to wheat, rye, barley, oat, spelt or kamut. The allergy advice panel below is from a product that is not suitable for coeliacs because there is a risk of contamination with the listed gluten-containing cereals.

2 Our Allergy labelling is changing Due to changes in food labelling law, we are required to change our allergy labelling and allergy advice boxes. We are legally required to highlight the presence of certain allergens, where they are included in the recipe, in the ingredients list on packs. From September 2013 we will begin to highlight allergens in bold in the ingredients list and not in a separate allergy advice box. You will also see new allergy statements on packs. For more information about how and why we are changing our labelling, see An example label is shown below: The Allergens that appear in the ingredients list are: peanuts, nuts, sesame, crustaceans (previously labelled as shellfish), fish, milk, egg, celery, mustard, wheat, rye, barley, oat, spelt, kamut, soya, sulphites, molluscs. Cross-contamination Where we believe that there is a real risk of a product having come into contact with allergens that could put a customer with an allergy at risk, one of the following phrases is used in the allergy advice panel: Allergy advice: For allergens, see ingredients in bold. Also not suitable for customers with an allergy to x, y or z due to manufacturing methods. Allergy advice: Not suitable for customers with an allergy to x, y or z due to manufacturing methods. An example label is shown below:

3 How to read Sainsbury s Old Style Allergy Labelling: During the change over period both the new and old systems of labelling will be on Sainsbury s products in store. Old Style Labelling: On all pre-packed foods that contain an allergen in the recipe, the allergen will be listed in the ingredients list but not in bold text. Always check the ingredients list FIRST for any allergens. Example old style label: This product is not suitable for people avoiding egg or milk. Sainsbury s old style labels have an additional box on the back of pack highlighting the presence of the major allergens listed in the EU labelling legislation. This box usually appears below the ingredients panel and is headed Allergy Advice. If the allergen is present in the recipe the text in the box states Contains followed by whichever of the following allergens are present: Peanuts, Nuts, Sesame, Shellfish, Fish, Milk, Egg, Celery, Mustard, Wheat Gluten, Rye Gluten, Barley Gluten, Oat Gluten, Spelt Gluten, Kamut Gluten, Soya, Sulphites, molluscs. The background to this box is pink (except when the label is black and white). Example old style allergy advice box: This example indicates that the product contains milk, wheat and barley in the recipe Where the supplier and the Sainsbury s technologist agree that there is a real risk of a product having accidentally come into contact with allergens that are not in the recipe and that the risk cannot be managed and would put customers safety at risk, the following warning phrase is used in the Allergy Advice box: Not suitable for (name of allergen e.g. milk) allergy sufferers due to the methods used in the production of this product. Where space on the label is very limited we sometimes have to use: Not suitable for (name of the allergen e.g. milk) allergy sufferers. Example old style allergy advice box: This example indicates that the product is at risk of being contaminated with nuts or sesame.

4 Please note that both statements above mean exactly the same; the only difference is the amount of space available on the label for the message.

5 Product guidance for people avoiding GLUTEN About this list This list contains Sainsbury s own brand products that are made without ingredients containing gluten. Our suppliers and product technologists have ensured that each product does not include gluten-containing grains (wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut or oats) or ingredients derived from these gluten-containing grains in the recipe and the risk of contamination with these gluten-containing grains has been effectively managed. The most up-to-date allergy information is always on the product packaging and you should always check the ingredients list and allergy advice statements on pack at time of Please note that the products in our freefrom range all contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) gluten and we can guarantee this this is our specialist gluten-free brand. We cannot guarantee that all the other products in this list, outside of the freefrom range contain less than 20ppm gluten but they do not deliberately contain gluten and risk of cross contamination with gluten has been effectively managed. Important information about breakfast cereals: The own-brand breakfast cereals listed are suitable for a glutenfree diet even though they contain barley malt extract and the allergy advice box states contains gluten. This is because they have been tested for gluten and only contain a very small amount of gluten (from the barley malt extract) which is at a level that most coeliacs can tolerate. Important information about oats in freefrom products: We have improved the quality of our flapjacks, granola and muesli by the addition of pure oats. The gluten, wheat and dairy free oats used in this product are high in fibre and have been carefully produced so that they are free from contamination by other gluten containing grains. Most coeliacs can tolerate oats, however you should add them to your diet slowly and consult with your Doctor or Dietitian before doing so, especially if you are newly diagnosed. Products which contain pure oats will display the pink roundel (see below) on packaging. Using the list Our Product Guidance Lists feature 2 sections. The first list shows all the products that have been added to the list this month. The second list shows all Sainsbury s own brand products (both existing and newly added to the list) that are suitable for people following a gluten free diet. This list does not include products from the In Store Bakery, the service deli, the hot food counters, fresh meat and fresh fish counters, Sainsbury s café or the self-service salad bar. This is because we advise people with allergies to avoid all of the products sold in these areas due to the potential risk of cross contamination caused by the open food handling. Within the list, the products are divided by categories e.g. Fresh meal solutions, Dairy, Biscuits etc. These categories are then divided into sub-categories. So in Fresh meal solutions you will find Classic meals, Inspired to Cook, Fresh Italian meals, Fresh Indian meals etc. Following each sub-category there is a four digit number in brackets, e.g. Fresh Italian meals (0015). This is the department code that is unique to the sub-category, this code may help the Sainsbury s colleague in store find the product for you.

6 The first column of the list contains some numbers, used internally by Sainsbury s, called SKUs. Each product has a unique SKU number and this may help the Sainsbury s colleague in store or on the customer service desk help you identify the product you are looking for. The second column contains the barcode that appears on pack. The third column is the product description. This is the name of the product that appears on the front of pack and it also includes the weight of the product. How to search for products or product types Are you looking for a particular product but don t want to trawl through the list? If you are viewing this on a computer all you need to do is press Ctrl and the letter F (For mac computers press the Command button and the letter F ). A box will then appear in the top right hand corner where you can type the name of the product, or type of product you are looking for and then press search. The computer will automatically find it for you if the product is included in the list. How to identify the exact product from the list, when you re doing your shopping: SKU Barcode How to search on the grocery shopping website You can search for any of the products listed below on the grocery online shop Simply copy and paste the SKU number from the list into the search box, and click Go. You can also search for a list of products at once, by using our shopping list tool. Click on find a list of products at the top of the page, and enter the SKU numbers (separated by a comma), and Click find products.

Our teams take time, care & attention to ensure we source the best ingredients & recipes from around the world, to deliver an outstanding taste experience. be good to yourself (abbreviated in the list to bgty). This is Sainsbury s healthier option range where we have developed great tasting everyday essential products which are better for you because we have controlled the levels of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt without compromising on taste. All products will either be less than 3% fat or reduced fat (containing at least 30% less fat than the standard equivalent product). My Goodness. This is Sainsbury s naturally good brand, targeted towards a customers looking for health through delicious, naturally good products. The products offer customers more of the nutrients and foods that we typically lack, such as fruit, vegetables, fibre, Omega 3, vitamins and minerals and controls what we eat too much of, being low in saturated fat, salt and sugar. freefrom. Sainsbury s were the first major supermarket to introduce an own label free from range back in This range today now includes over 100 products that have all been specially made without wheat or gluten and most are also made without milk. Products are suitable for coeliacs and people with a wheat allergy. Most are also suitable for people with milk allergy or lactose intolerance. The European Commission has worked with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to confirm that these ingredients are safe for people with coeliac disease. glucose syrups derived from wheat or barley including dextrose wheat-based maltodextrins distilled ingredients made from cereals that contain gluten. I.e. alcoholic spirits such as whiskey Nutritional information for people avoiding gluten You can get all the nutrients you need from a gluten free diet as long as you swap staple foods made from wheat and other gluten-containing grains, for wholegrains and nutritious starchy carbohydrates. This includes rice, corn (maize), polenta (cornmeal), buckwheat, millet, quinoa, potato, sweet potato, fortified breakfast cereals (i.e. cornflakes and rice crispies). Gluten -free bread, rice, potatoes, gluten-free pasta and other starchy foods should be included at each meal and provide the bulk of your calories each day. It can often be hard finding alternative sources of fibre to whole-wheat on a gluten free diet, so here are some tips to increasing your fibre intake: you should try to include foods in your diet that are high in fibre such as brown rice, wild rice, beans and lentils, and more fruit and vegetables. If you have been diagnosed with coeliac disease or IBS, check with your GP or dietician before increasing your fibre intake.
