2 What is hand arm vibration syndrome? Information, Information, Information. Hand arm vibration syndrome, also known as HAVS, is a type of industrial disease that produces symptoms in the arms and hands usually from the prolonged use of vibrating power tools in the workplace. Without proper care and too high an exposure to vibrating industrial tools hand arm vibration syndrome, which is a secondary form of Raynaud s syndrome, can occur in a worker along with the possibility of carpal tunnel syndrome. Within this booklet you will find the information required to assess the exposure from the tools you may hire from Fraser Tool Hire Ltd. All figures quoted are the Manufacturers stated HAV levels, these are then used in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive s HAV Exposure Calculator* HAVS can be a disabling condition that affects the muscles, joints, blood vessels and nerves of the hands, arms and wrists. Unfortunately the symptoms of HAVS are currently irreversible so it is incredibly important that workers in high risk occupations to extra care to prevent the onset of HAVS and if any symptoms develop they should be discussed with a medical professional. Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) was commonly referred to as Vibration White Finger (VWF) in the past, but it was discovered that the symptoms associated with the condition were not solely confined to the fingers so the vibration white finger term was superseded by the more accurate hand arm vibration term. What are the early symptoms? Identifying signs and symptoms at an early stage is important. It will allow you, as the employer, to take action to prevent the health effects from becoming serious for your employee. The symptoms include any combination of: Tingling and numbness in the fingers; Not being able to feel things properly; Loss of strength in the hands; Fingers going white (blanching) and becoming red and painful on recovery (particularly in the cold and wet, and probably only in the tips at first). Additional information with regards to Noise, PPE etc is also listed. * What is EAV and ELV? The Exposure Action Value (EAV) is a daily amount of vibration exposure above which employers are required to take action to control exposure. The greater the exposure level, the greater the risk and the more action employers will need to take to reduce the risk. For hand-arm vibration the EAV is a daily exposure of 2.5 m/s2 A(8). There is also a level of vibration exposure that must not be exceeded. This is called the exposure limit value. The Exposure Limit Value (ELV) is the maximum amount of vibration an employee may be exposed to on any single day. For hand-arm vibration the ELV is a daily exposure of 5 m/s2 A(8). It represents a high risk above which employees should not be exposed.

HAVS is preventable, but once the damage is done it is permanent. HAVS is serious and disabling, and nearly 2 million people are at risk. Damage from HAVS can include the inability to do fine work and cold can trigger painful finger blanching attacks. By law, an employer must assess and identify measures to eliminate or reduce risks from exposure to hand-arm vibration so that employees are protected from risks to their health. Where the risks are low, the actions you take may be simple and inexpensive, but where the risks are high, you should manage them using a prioritised action plan to control exposure to hand-arm vibration. Where required, ensure that: Control measures to reduce vibration are properly applied; and You provide information, training and health surveillance.
