Pressure Vessel Statutory inspections carried out by HSB Haughton every 26 months (see iris Book 4 equipment maintenance). PAT Test carried out. (see iris Book 4 equipment maintenance). 6 Gas Appliances Gas-fired heaters/boilers. Ambi-rad. Spray booths Explosion & fire Spraybooths (Including burners and controls) routinely serviced by specialist contractor Dalby Engineering No action required 7 Noise Use of sanders, grinders, air driven tools. Paint spraying 8 Hand arm vibration Use of power tools i.e. orbital sanders, grinders, polishers etc Possible noise induced hearing loss Possible effects to fingers, hands and wrists Air chisel not used. Regular but intermittent use of sanders etc. Power tools e.g. wrench, grinder drills. Typical use 1-1½ hour in any day. Heated rest room available. Tools are owned by company and employees. Employees informed about risk from vibratory tools and keeping tools in good working order. Noise readings to be taken. Training to be delivered on HAV preventative measures

HSE and Portman Motor Company notices displayed informing employees to inform company of any problem with hands. Health surveillance carried out annually by our outsourced Health Surveillance service Sound Advice. Sound Advice have carried out HAV assessment on staff 9 Fire & Explosion General Activities Burns, Death Fire alarm is a siren. Fire exits provided with signage. Fire action notices displayed by all fire control extinguisher points. Suitable fire extinguishers are provided. Training on their selection/ usage. Each allocated part of the premises for fire evacuation search/roll call. Fire alarm tested weekly by fire marshal. Extinguishers inspected annually by contractor and monthly by fire marshal. Fire marshal to carry out fire audit regularly. Fire risk assessment carried out. Fire control log in place iris system Book 9. New employees told about fire precautions as part of their induction. Employees trained in workshop techniques and responsible for upkeep of personal tools. Various tools to be calibrated. Pre-user checks on all air driven tools for tightness of connections, leaks prior to use and to report defects.

Check that all floor surfaces are properly maintained and, if necessary, covered with a non-slip material. Clean spills and other hazards from the floor immediately. When cleaning liquid spillages do not forget to clean up the absorbent materials straight away. Remember it is just as easy to slip on the absorbent material as it is on the original spillage. Do not leave tools or materials scattered on the floor. Maintain outdoor surfaces and keep free of potholes and other trip hazards. Avoid trailing air lines Avoid trailing electrical leads. Provide adequate lighting in all areas. Provide appropriate handrails in stairways Tool box talk on slips / trips and falls to be carried. Safety shoes to be worn in workshop Members of the public not to be allowed in Bodyshop. Visitors book in place for unescorted visitors to site e.g. trainers, insurers engineers and inspectors. Manoeuvring vehicle chassis alignment jig. Moving welding and burning equipment, including gas cylinders Fractures to employees Back injuries, general strains and upper limb disorders It is the responsibility of all employees that use ladders, to inspect them prior to use and ensure that they are suitable for the job. They must inspect the work area and task that they are about to perform, in order to ensure that the risks are recognised and mitigated. Ladder to be given an identification number and entered into a register. Ladder to be stored correctly and locked with a padlock and chain to be issued by an authorised person. Authorised person to check whether ladder requested is suitable for task. Ladder must be inspected on purchase, before each use, after any mishap, drop or impact, and annually. Manual Handling assessments available. Low frequency for handling heavy items. Mechanical assistance available e.g. trolleys for welding equipment. Help available from other employees if required. Gloves provided to prevent cuts when handling new and scrapped body panels. Ladder procedure to be implemented, information given to employees and recorded. If a ladder cannot be properly repaired it must be scrapped Tool box talk on use of ladders to be carried out.
