1 THE EGYPTIAN FURNITURE INDUSTRY Backed with an old historical culture and reputation worldwide in the production of classic and modern furniture and antique reproduction; the Egyptian furniture industry stands proudly with a long promising vision towards the future. The furniture industry is considered one of the most flourishing industrial sectors in Egypt that was able to triple its exports in less than 4 years starting 2005, while accommodating the furiously growing local market needs. The sector embraces around 200,000 establishments and a highly productive over a one million skilled labor force. Supported by the Egyptian Furniture Export Council (EFEC) and the Chamber of Woodworking and Furniture Industry (CWWFI), the sector is still undergoing an aggressive plan to penetrate new markets; while maintaining its current international market share without losing track of the vast growing local market in terms of real estate communities under construction, satellite cities, mega projects and touristic developments. Currently, Egypt s menu doesn t serve only as a world class exquisite furniture source but also a supplier of global space solutions which includes interior and furniture design, as well as space management. 2 Quality: Besides the talent acquired by the highly skilled Egyptian master craftsmen, the industrial base had been strengthened with large scale production facilities implementing the latest advanced technologies using state of the art machinery. With two technology and testing centers accredited by FIRA of UK and CATAS of Italy, the Egyptian furniture industry is now completely in line with European and international quality standards and specifications. The Egyptian Furniture Industry has quite a broad scope in styles, size and capacities that helps accommodate the needs of the international markets from major projects to small retailers. A variety of styles are included such as Antique reproduction, Classic, Contemporary, Modern and Ethnic styles. Custom-made products and lines are also available for most of the collections provided; residential, contract, hospitality, public areas, office solutions and more. On top of it all, supplying tailored packages to furniture buyers worldwide with attention to minute details and superior after sale service.

3 Exhibitions: The Egyptian manufacturers -- backed by the Egyptian Furniture Export Council (EFEC) have participated in a number of international exhibitions worldwide; such as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile held yearly in the RHO Fiera of Milan, Italy which is considered as one of the biggest furniture trade fairs in the world visited by almost 300,000 visitors per year. In France, exhibitions like Equip Hotel, Meuble Paris and Maison & Objet are usually attended by Egyptians. Other countries are also on the exhibition plan such as Russia with Mebel of Moscow, United Kingdom with Interiors Birmingham, Emirates and Saudi Arabia with Index, in addition to USA, Germany and more. Furnex -- Egypt s international furniture and furnishings trade fair -- which started eight years ago, is continuing its presence as one of the fastest developing international furniture and furnishings exhibitions among the similar events worldwide. The fair s name is now synonymous in the minds of many international buyers as a must-attend one stop-shop event for furniture and additional complimentary items such as home textiles, natural stones, lighting, accessories and floorings. 4 Design : EFEC has developed a clear strategy in order to develop the perception of manufacturers towards design. Its plan included organizing design management courses, seminars and design workshops where young designers and design students worked closely with the manufacturers to develop ideas and prototypes for new products that meet the manufacturers requirements. In addition, the designs that succeeded to be prototyped in high quality were exhibited in local and international exhibitions under the brand KYME which was created to group all the outcome of the design projects. KYME, April 2008 Timeless Stories, April 2008 Five years ago, the Egyptian Furniture Export Council (EFEC), backed with the Ministry of Trade and Industry, set the plan in collaboration with other supporting entities and organizations. The first project was The Core In 2006; followed by The Platform, featured in FURNEX 2007, highlighting the diversity of local manufacturers as they began their collaborations with local designers. The Platform showed-off the increasing collaboration between both international and local. The design emphasis was taken to another level through several projects with international designers like Christophe Pillet, who worked on several projects with local companies.

5 The year 2007 saw another high profile project with the internationally renowned designer Karim Rashid. Rashid got excited over the project not only because it was the first active reconnection with his native land, but also because he saw the Egyptian furniture industry at a turning point. He created a collection of products for five major manufacturers which were featured in a special booth at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April of This event represented yet another leap towards the sector s goal of international presence. Encouraged by this success, EFEC collaborated in 2008 with Alchemy s designers Karim Mekhtigian and Mohamed Fares in another project named Timeless Stories. In many ways, this theme constituted a continuation of the work done in the Core and the Platform. Timeless Stories presented an experimental platform of contemporary creativity that excluded the linear factor of time with an attempt to capture the multi-dimensional lifestyle of Egypt s identity as a Mediterranean, African and Middle-Eastern country. Design Workshop, January 2010 By the end of 2008, the vision was much clearer. More companies started to appreciate the value of design, the importance of it for the industry growth and its impact on the international visibility. It was the time for a more comprehensive project to commence. In 2009, EFEC collaborated with Rhimal Design and the European institute of Design (IED) to organize the first International Design + Industry workshop. The Workshop was led by a group of eight renowned international designers from Japan, USA, Europe and Egypt. They worked with a selected group of twenty young Egyptian designers together with twenty Egyptian furniture manufacturers. After the tremendous success of the first Design + Industry Workshop on both the local and international levels, a second workshop was scheduled in early 2010 to continue the strategic plan to integrate design into the industry as a means of expanding manufacturers marketing potentials.

6 Coinciding with Furnex 2010, EFEC launched its new project +20 Egypt Design. The city circuit event held in Cairo was the starting and finishing point of a wider innovative project which is part of a strategic process initiated by the Council to give Egyptian companies a boost and the tools to consistently be competitive in the local and global markets. With the objective of placing Egypt and Cairo on the international design map, the event was held in the oldest and most beautiful, streets of Cairo s old city, El-Muiz Street.
