1 EPISCOPAL CHURCH Proposed Capital Campaign Goal: $575,000 Leadership The Rt. Rev. Dr. C. Franklin Brookhart Jr. IX Bishop of Montana The Rev. Susan T. Eades Rector Stephen DeHart Mary Alice Jones Candidates for Holy Orders James Jones Postulant for Holy Orders Members of the Vestry (2015) Katie Bump, Sr. Warden Mary Jo O Rourke, Jr. Warden Dorothy DeHart, Treasurer Robin Winden, Secretary Rick Goff Maralyn Kailey Alma Nye Louise Volkening Alan Zetler Saint James church has shared the inexpressible gift* of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Dillon since the city was founded. In 2015 we celebrate 134 years as a center for service, worship, education, evangelism, and pastoral care. Our church was built in 1882, and the Guild Hall in On July 2 Our church bell will have rung for 6,919 Sundays, and on countless other occasions. Six generations have treasured our beautiful buildings, maintaining them through the years. We love them, but we realize that facilities of the past century are not well-suited for active ministry and public use, now and in the future. Handicap access, convenient restrooms, fire safety, egress routes, an adequate electrical system, sound system and acoustics, comfortable furnishings, and an updated kitchen are among the improvements needed, to enable the ministries centered here to thrive. It is our goal to maintain the historic sense-of-place at Saint James, while serving the present and anticipated future needs of God s people in a second century of ministry. This brochure illustrates a vision and proposed improvement plan for Saint James that is the product of many prayers, thoughtful meetings, discussion, and revisions. It is a full, perhaps daunting to-do list, addressing each critical need. It is time to evaluate the feasibility of this plan. What can we afford? What are our priorities? We can only move forward by God s grace, through the support of members and friends of Saint James. We invite your serious and prayerful consideration of the plan, and look forward to your response. *2 Corinthians 9:15: Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now?...the latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity. 5 What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable...it is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body...it is not the Spiritual which is first, but the physical. 1 Corinthians 15:42-46 New parking and walkways Estimated Costs Cost estimates have been provided by the architect based on general guidelines, not specific details. Phases of Work Remodel church entry Improve egress in east entry New office wing Estimated Cost $40,000 $105,000 Improve accessibility in church sanctuary. $20,000 Convert existing office to sacristy 10,000 Remodel existing sacristy And Guild Hall entry $130,000 Remodel Guild Hall $75,000 Covered walkway and pocket garden $20,000 Parking, walkways, and labyrinth $75,000 Contingency (unforeseen expenses) $50,000 Permits & design fees $50,000 Total estimated cost $575,000
6 Proposed Improvements Phases of Work We put no obstacle in any one s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry. 2 Corinthians 6:3 Remodel church entry: $40,000 Remove leaky flat roof and decayed parapet from the narthex. Remove interior wall to open the space into a single room. Extend gable roof from church out over the narthex, supported by parallel chord trusses with common coffer, creating a vaulted ceiling with skylights. Move the church bell to the new gable end above the church door on Glendale Street. Leave the Cross and Crown round window in place, with interior lighting. Place a new round window (plain glass) on the new gable end below the bell. Add a new Second Century memorial plaque in the narthex. Retain original wooden doors between narthex and church; may place windows in them. Match windows on either side of the doors. Paint walls and replace flooring using colors and finishes that blend with existing colors and finishes, both interior and exterior. Inset exterior church entry to ensure handicap accessibility in door width and threshold height. Install new exterior doors with accessible hardware and glass panels. Keep church cornerstone visible. Build textured concrete ramp and new stairs for the church entry with iron/steel handrails. New office wing: $105,000 Move the bank of stained glass windows presently on the east wall of the narthex to the west wall. Build an addition to the east side of the narthex, including a restroom, a copy/ utility room, office for the priest, and a foyer/ waiting/reception area. Use board and bat siding on new construction to match historic church siding. Install interior doors with glass panels and accessible hardware to connect the new addition with the narthex. New exterior doors with glass panels and accessible hardware would connect the new addition with the walkway to the Guild Hall. Build ramped access to the new addition and beyond to the Guild Hall. Place a sign, which may be electronic, on the street side of the new addition, to indicate church service times and special activities. Install planter or bench in niche along narthex entry ramp. Improve accessibility in church sanctuary: $20,000 Convert sanctuary floor to one level with ramp access added to sanctuary on the left (pulpit) side. Upgrade audio system with system controls centralized in organ room. Update electrical system. Install new carpet similar to existing. Convert existing office to sacristy: $10,000 Replace existing office window with one that can be opened. Update electrical outlets and heater. Install sink and new cupboards in the existing church office and convert it to use as the Sacristy when the office moves to the new addition. Replace flooring, repaint. Remodel existing sacristy and Guild Hall entry: $130,000 Add an elevator outside and adjacent to the northeast corner of the existing sacristy and the basement stair for the Guild Hall. The elevator will provide access to basement, Guild Hall entry, and Guild Hall kitchen levels. Extend upper landing over basement stairway to meet the new elevator. Upgrade electrical system to accommodate the elevator.
7 for a Second Century at Saint James Since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 1 Corinthians 14:12 Move two small panels of stained glass windows to other parts of the building. Partially remove the wall between existing sacristy and entry hall. Add a new restroom and coat rack in the Guild Hall foyer when the sacristy is relocated into the existing office. Install new Guild Hall entry double doors with glass panels, ensuring accessibility in door width, hardware, and threshold height. Remove existing chairlift and install handrails on both sides of stairway. Install new flooring and repaint in entry, stairwell, and landing areas. Remodel Guild Hall: $75,000 Upgrade electrical system throughout Guild Hall. Upgrade kitchen with new ranges, refrigerator, cupboards and countertop. Extend countertop, add storage cabinets outside service opening, a coffee station and a small sink along the wall outside the kitchen. Add lighting and ceiling fans in the main hall. Improve acoustics in the main hall with new window/wall and ceiling treatments. Replace double door on east end of hall with a single glass-panel fire door. Install new flooring and repaint. Install a gas fire in the fireplace. Replace worn living room furnishings. Remove the interior double doors at the east entry and finish the outer entry. Repaint the stairwell. Expand the landing and steps outside the east entry to accommodate outside door swing, and extend railings as needed. Convert the two small restrooms in the basement into one handicap-accessible restroom. Covered walkway and pocket garden: $20,000 Remove the existing concrete walkway and connect the new addition with the Guild Hall with a covered, ramped concrete walkway (loggia), to be fully accessible. Minimize pigeon roosting sites in the design. Install lighting as needed for the walkway. In the space between the church and the new walkway, develop a patio area with seating and planters. This will be a shady, quiet outdoor space. Ensure proper drainage. Parking, walkways, and labyrinth: $75,000 Construct head-in parking along the east end of the Guild Hall and one parking spot parallel in the alley (4 vehicles, one handicap accessible). Construct new sidewalk from the rear steps to the Guild Hall kitchen around the hall to join the ramped walkway to the church and Guild Hall entries. Install lighting along walkways. Outside the entry to the new addition, construct a raised circular patio, with a stamped concrete labyrinth pattern, surrounded by planters and bench seating. Use stone siding on the patio base and face the street side of the narthex ramp with stone. Install a raised metal sign Saint James Episcopal Church on the stone base of the patio. Plant deciduous shade trees along the walkway, at least 30 feet from the building, that will grow to provide afternoon shade on the Guild Hall. Cost estimates have been provided by the architect based on general guidelines, not specific details.
8 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 Gifts Essential Chart The following chart illustrates a combination of gifts that would comprise a successful $575,000 capital campaign.
