4 AUDUBON PARK GARDEN DISTRICT APGD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Welcome to the Audubon Park Garden District s Inaugural Retro Modern Home Tour. Originally developed to support a Strategic Air Command base during World War II, quiet Audubon Park has developed into a food and cultural hub recognized by such publications as the New York Times, Southern Living, USA Today, Chicago Tribune and many others. Rechristened the Audubon Park Garden District (APGD) by the Main Street program, APGD is now the hippest scene in Central Florida and is becoming known for burgeoning culinary chops, a creative community and singular events. Anchored at one end by Leu Gardens, APGD is home to nationally acclaimed businesses such as craft beer bar Redlight Redlight, music store Park Ave CDs, NatGeo Travel s favorite destination Blue Bird Bake Shop, and locavore destination East End Market, in addition to underground favorites such as Stardust Coffee and Video, as well as boutique shops, hair salons, service providers and the best in home and garden sundries. In between the botanical garden, great food and award-winning retailers, visitors to APGD can experience an array of original events, including Bastille Day, Zombietoberfest and Kidsfest, along with pop up art receptions, wine walks and more. 2015 RETRO MODERN HOME TOUR HOME 1-1927 LAKE SUE DRIVE The original home at 1927 Lake Sue was built in 1948 as part of the Beeman Park housing developed by the Beeman Estate.

7 2015 RETRO MODERN HOME TOUR HOME LAKE SUE DRIVE The original home at 1927 Lake Sue was built in 1948 as part of the Beeman Park housing developed by the Beeman Estate. The current owners were drawn to the Audubon Park area because of the excellent schools and enjoy the revitalization of the community. In irreparable condition when the property was purchased, the current owners rebuilt the house. Inspired by both classic European modern design and contemporary American designer Michelle Kaufmann, the owners consulted architect Michael Wenrich with Midtown Architecture Studio to create a space with modern sensibility and rustic touches. The homeowners selected Winter Brothers Construction to build the home based on the builder s familiarity and success with modern design. 7

An additional bedroom, bathroom and garage were added prior to the most recent remodel. The current home design and furnishings are inspired by the both the homeowners modern sensibility, as well as the mid-century feel of other homes in APGD. Finally, the vibrant colors of Mexico are the finishing touch of inspiration for the home. Although the primary color scheme of the home is black, white, and grey, it is accented with splashes of color inspired by a traditional Mexican palette of bright blue, green, orange, and pink. 8

Sandstone was added to the exterior façade to enhance the block structure. The color palette throughout the interior is serene neutral, accented with pops of orange. Furnishings throughout the home are either consistent with, or complementary to, the mid-century period. The original terrazzo floors were restored and refinished throughout the home, while removing the vent hood and adding an alcohol-burning unit updated the fireplace. The homeowners used the attached planter to plant a small indoor garden of cacti and succulents. Outside the landscaping mirrors the home s modern feel and is designed to be Florida friendly, including native and drought tolerant plants. 9

Since purchasing the home in 2007 they have corrected and re-worked decades of poor design and re-design to create a beautiful, warm, wood toned, clean lined, clutter free, everything-in-its-place space that has historic reference and design integrity. This Mid-Century soft-modern home is a space that is the right balance of contemporary and comfort for modern lifestyles. A large bow window in the family room (most likely a picture window that was replaced in the 90s) along with sliders in the master and large, well placed windows throughout the home meld the outside with the inside. Unlike the clinical coldness that is often found in Mid-Century Modern Architecture, this home has rich, warm neutrals that display a fantastic collection of art and a bit of whimsy. The exterior with its own living room, generous use of naturalistic landscaping, and oversized-pool is every bit as clean, warm and inviting as the interior. 10

This model s footprint can be found in over 60 homes in the Audubon Park neighborhood. John Tanner and Richard Ivey clearly have a great appreciation and understanding of why such exemplary models of modern architecture need to not only be preserved, but enjoyed, and their domestic lifestyle attests to their enthusiasm for Mid Century Modernism. This home is every bit Mid-century modern from the asymmetrical shed and flat roof lines, generous green living spaces, Eichler inspired and clerestory windows, to the inside with its open design concept, flat planes, large glass windows and terrazzo flooring. The interior has been meticulously outfitted with select examples of period furniture, fixtures and décor. As in most MCM homes, clutter is out and clean, simple tableaus are dotted throughout, while original art accents serve as an offbeat accompaniment to the home s mid 1950s origins. 11
