1 4-H Interior Design lets you: Use your imagination and creativity. Take a glimpse into new career opportunities Wherever you live country or city; house, apartment, or mobile home; private bedroom or one you share with a brother or sister there are things you learn and do to make your home more enjoyable! Interior Design is a great way to learn how to make your personal space fun and a comfortable place to be a space that you are proud to show off! What You Will Learn: 4-H Interior Design will help you learn about design. 4-H Interior Design will help you learn to select and care for nice furnishings. 4-H Interior Design will help you learn how to see a mixture of home products that relate to your home. 4-H Interior Design will help you learn how to create a budget. The Guidelines: Compete by yourself or on a two-person team. Youth on teams should be the same 4-H age level (e.g., Junior can work with a Junior Your design board is a tool to display the color scheme and furniture arrangement. Please use a three panel foam display board that is 36 x48. These are available at most craft and school supply stores as well as most large chain stores. Flooring, Wall Treatment, Trim, and Ceilings. Use swatches of carpet, flooring samples, paint samples, or sample wall treatments (free at most building supply stores). Mount these to your board to show what type of floor and wall treatments you will use. YOU MUST HAVE 1 EXAMPLE OF EACH: FLOOR AND WALLS. You may have more (ex. Ceilings or two different wall treatments in one room). Fabrics: Include two swatches of fabric that will be used in the room. (ex. pillows, curtains, chairs, etc). Fabric samples should reflect your color scheme and coordinate with your paint color. Labels: Label board (ex. bedroom) and any swatches of fabric, paint or floor samples for their use (ex. pillows, curtains, etc). Furniture arrangement: Use the room template and furniture template to organize the room layout. The furniture layout will be judged on creativity, proper use of space and lighting, neatness, and accuracy of the scaled drawing. You have a $7, budget to complete your room. Please use the budget form to show how you used your money. In addition, please see the Senior 4-H Interior Design information to see the Rules for 4-H Interior Design Board Presentation as well as the room and furniture templates. More Information: Please see the Alabama 4-H Competitive Events Webpage to review the General Contest Policy and the Age & Eligibility Chart. Detailed Rules for Interior Design Interior Design A consumer science project Design a room of your choice! Marion County Age Divisions: Junior: Youth ages 9-13 (On August 1, if your age is 11 but your birthday is before January 1, 2017 your 4-H age is 12.) Senior: Youth ages (On August 1, if your age is 13 but your birthday is before January 1, 2017 your 4-H age is 14.) Contact the Marion County Extension Office if you have questions: (205) or rgd0007@aces.edu The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (Alabama A&M University and Auburn University) is an equal opportunity educator and employer.
2 Rules for 4-H Interior Design Board Presentation: Tell who you designed the room for: child, adult, or teen. Tell what type of color scheme you are using in the room; is it monochromatic, complementary or adjacent? Tell about the furniture arrangement and about the traffic patterns of the room. Also tell how you applied the principles of design to your plan. Tell what type of floor and wall treatments will be used. Tell how the fabrics you chose will be used in the room. Tell what you like most about the room. Tell about how you used your budget. Neatness of the board will be judged. Presentation skills will be judged. please note, if you are competing on a two person team, both team members must participate in the presentation. Parents & Volunteers Guide Like all 4-H projects, this activity is just for young people. The role of adult helpers is to support and encourage youth in their efforts, to ask and answer questions about the project, and to help youth learn specific techniques that they might use in their project. Thinking about Interior Design: Design is an orderly arrangement or a plan. Design is described as the selection and arrangement of material with two aims order and beauty. Interior design refers to the inside space of a room or building. It is the art that deals with the organization, selection, and arrangement of the elements of design. The Elements of Design: Lines: Lines may be straight, curved, or a combination of both. When you enter a room, lines help to make it easier for you to look from one part of the room to another. Long horizontal lines can make a piece of furniture seem restful. Vertical lines seem to be more formal Diagonal lines create action and restless movement. Objects in a room can be made to look taller or wider with the direction of lines. For example, vertical stripes at a tall window will make it look taller. Space: Space is an essential element of any design. Your personal space is limited by walls, window, fabrics, furniture, and other objects. The challenge is to use space effectively, especially in high traffic areas. Color: Use color to an advantage in planning a scheme for your room according to one of these blendings: Monochromatic: when one color is used in shades, tints, and tones. Complementary: using two colors opposite of each other on the color wheel, such as red and green. Adjacent: when adjoining or related colors are used such as yellow and yellow-green. Where do I start? There are many different ways to decide how you want to decorate your room. If you have a clear idea in mind, you might just start shopping for materials. If you like to use a computer, you might start playing with a design program like: Or you might try the approach we have written out here. Let your imagination flow. Look at interior design magazines like: Better Homes & Gardens House Beautiful Martha Stewart Living Pure Contemporary You could watch some home makeover shows on television. Sometimes, inspiration comes through nature, or finding one piece of fabric that you could build a room around. It is also a good idea to check your local library for books on home and design. You could even check the yellow pages for a local interior design decorator. Once you have something in mind, begin your board by finding your paint, fabric, and flooring samples. You can also cut pieces of furniture out of magazines that you would like to see in your room. Play with your floor plan and furniture arrangement to make sure that you will have enough room for your items. Once you have everything decided, begin putting your board together.
3 The Day of the Big Event: Each county or region will schedule its own 4-H Interior Design competition. It may be part of a County Round- Up or Regional Congress. This is also a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate good interior design in your own local club. On the day of the event, allow yourself plenty of time to set up. Be prepared to put loose items back together if they get damaged in transportation. Be ready to give a presentation on your room design as well as hand your judges a written copy of your presentation. In addition, the judges may ask some simple questions you need to able to answer, like: How did you create your design? Why did you use the colors you selected? What would you do differently? Could you use your design to create a real room? Advancing Through Competition: Congratulations! If you make it to Regional or State, you are among the best in Alabama! The judges recognize that you have come up with a really good design and made great choices. Your hard work and your skill created something wonderful. 4-H Regional Awards will be determined by the planning committee for that event. Notice will be send to each county. State Competition: All participants will receive a green participation ribbon At State, ribbons will be awarded to 50% of the participants in a contest using ordinal rankings up to a twelfth place ranking. Example: If there are 10 participants, first place will receive the Alabama State Trophy and a first place ribbon; placing ribbons will be awarded for the next four ranked participants for placing of second through fifth. The other five participants will receive honorable mention ribbons. Keeping Track of Your Costs: The purpose of this section is to show that the total cost of a room is often more than just the furniture or paint. Since you are not actually purchasing the items for your room, you will need to estimate the costs for your room. For Example: Bedroom Item: Furniture & Unit # Unit Cost Total Cost Bed Mattress have Armoire Desk Desk Chair Dresser Side Tables (2) each Wing Chair Subtotal Item: Flooring Cost Hardwood Floors -300 sq. ft / sq. ft Rug Rug Subtotal Item: Walls Cost Paint -2 gallons / gal Crown Molding- 9 pieces / 8ft Subtotal Item: Fabric Cost Duvet Cover -13 yards /yd Pillow Shams -3 yards / yd Window Treatments / yd yards Subtotal Item: Accessories Cost Wall Art- (3) each Lamps (3) each Throw Pillows (5) each Picture frames (4) each Other Miscellaneous items Flat Screen Television (32in) Queen Size Bed Sheets Subtotal TOTAL: Identification of Entry Name(s), county and level of participation should be displayed with each entry. An introduction at the beginning of your time would be appropriate. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (Alabama A&M University and Auburn University) is an equal opportunity educator and employer.
