1 REPORT INTERNATIONAL LHASA WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 2005 Urban renewal in Large housing areas is challenges for planning and quarter development. LHASA bring together experiences from East European Partners how are characteristic by fabricated house style and Partner from Eastern Germany and Italy with different approaches and local requirements. At the City of Leipzig the Department of Urban Regeneration and Residential Development (ASW) is responsible to handle the challenge of development of urban renewal in balance with the economic and social trends. The project LHASA is one brick to exchange experiences for one actually and important topic of urban renewal. Results of this process are unused open space at large housing living areas. By this side City of Leipzig is also project Partner by UTN II (Interreg IIIB) and ReUrbanMobil (5 th RFO) with similar topics of urban renewal how got in the week of 12 to Partner and Final meetings. The ASW has initiated a event week to present activities of urban renewal. In a frame of a official welcome to all project partners and involved bodies of the EU project was held on event Urban party to network with different European partners.

2 The international LHASA workshop was be used for a wide exchange of experiences in the context of Large housing areas. The City of Leipzig used this Workshop to present the provisional result and the implementation of activities in frame of LHASA to the project partners. Topics like local economy, living quality at Leipzig Grünau, challenge of existing and arising open free space, reutilisation of vacant buildings and a discussion about frame work planning are part of the Agenda. The international LHASA workshop got three main parts. Guided Bus Tour to Leipzig-Grünau By a guided bus tour presentation of the challenges and examples in southern part of the city. This quarter are example for urban renewal from former industrial areas with actually a lot of unused open space (demolished fabrics) revitalisation of quarter centre through determined public invests at public space and private invests for reutilisation of former industrial building.

3 Round trip and walkway to present the actually local situation at Leipzig Grünau in the process of urban renewal. Stops at areas with social structure problems, areas with houses are planned for demolishing, examples for free open space after demolishing process and examples for opportunities to intervention of the ASW especially at public open space. Presentation of invest by the City of Leipzig in public open space and leisure time areas. Presentation of private investments like a private school and investments of housing companies. By this way also presentation of the pilot project Skater hall (reutilisation of a unused transformer station) Internal LHASA Workshop session At the meeting place presentation of the implementation of the activities of LHASA accept WP4. Topics were Local economy, reutilisation of the vacant building, presentation of Venice with the participation citizens and by this way also short explanation about the study for participation of citizens by Banska Bystrica.

The city of Leipzig used the international LHASA workshop to discuss this topic. With different input from the Project Partner cities (Pilzen, Berlin) and a Interreg IIIB North West project (SAUL ). The event was addressed to a interested visitors to get a experience exchange around the topic live quality and social integration and also frame work planning with new approaches.
