2 Learning Objectives 1. Participants will understand the value of creative placemaking for underserved neighborhoods. 2. Participants will learn strategies used in creative placemaking. 3. Participants will learn how collaboration can be fostered by creative placemaking workshops. 4. Participants will learn strategies to enact their own plans for creative placemaking projects.

9 Begin with the end in mind. Envision what you would like to see: artfully designed buildings, an inclusive community. Also what you do not want to see: displacement of existing residents, lack of diversity Be clear about motivation and goals, then engage the right players to achieve those goals.

33 Grants for Creative Placemaking Efforts

34 ULI offers grants for: projects that support creative placemaking, using arts-based placemaking strategies and programming to strengthen the connection between the built environment and human health.

35 ULI Selection Criteria Focus the intersection of creative placemaking and health. Partnerships with important groups are in place. Providing both tangible and intangible benefits, especially for disadvantaged communities. Involving multiple stakeholders, including artists, community, developers, public and private sector partners. Partners have a plan for action, including plans for funding. The project is part of a broader effort to revitalize a disinvested area.

43 Advisory Workshops Advisory Workshop District Councils receive $5,000 to support expenses for a workshop to be held this spring. These multi-day workshops for stakeholders help them implement projects that promote physical activity and encourage healthy behaviors.

45 2017 Workshops ULI Triangle - Transit Expansion in the Research Triangle ULI Triangle will help planners, developers, and community leaders consider creative placemaking principles and strategies as they plan for a major expansion of the region's transit system. The Advisory Workshop will identify strategies, approaches, and best practices in integrating creative placemaking with transit investments.

46 Creative Placemaking Grant Initiative The next round of grants will be for corridor implementation, $10K each. The grants will be announced in July and awarded in the fall, 2017.

53 Some More Case Studies Mill Hill: East Macon Arts Village Collaborative Planning Process for Creative Placemaking. Led by Macon Arts Alliance and many local and national players, converting blighted homes into artist live/ work space and blighted auditorium in community arts center. mill-hill-east-macon-arts-village/ Monroe Street Market, Washington, DC Bozzuto Development Group and Abdo Developers, $250M Mixed Use/Transit Oriented Development featuring 27 artist studios, art walk and community center. Houston Project Row Houses (led by artist Rick Lowe, 2014 recipient of the MacArthur genius award) Stoney Island Savings and Bank Theaster Gates Jr., an artist and professor at the University of Chicago, bought the property from the city for $1 and raised money for the restoration through his nonprofit Rebuild Foundation rebuild-foundation.org/. Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative, a partnership in Chicago to convert blighted building into artist live/work housing with community center.
