1 International Conference on Managing Urban Cultural Heritage (MUCH) 1-4 October 2018 Bayview Hotel Georgetown, George Town, Penang, Malaysia Organized by George Town World Heritage Incorporated Supported by State Government of Penang, Malaysia In Collaboration with Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO and The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur CONCEPT NOTE Cities are historically culturally diverse centres for knowledge, innovation and memory and act as a reflection of a society s identity. They are composed of interconnected layers of natural and cultural, tangible and intangible, international and local values, and are constantly evolving and adapting. The complex and dynamic nature of a city makes the management of a living urban heritage extra challenging, yet meaningful. To commemorate the 10 th anniversary of George Town and Melaka being inscribed as a World Heritage Site, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, the International Conference on Managing Urban Cultural Heritage will be organised from 1 to 4 October 2018 in the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. The conference is supported by the State Government of Penang, Malaysia, with collaboration from Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO and the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur. The objectives of this conference are as follows: a) To discuss management approaches and innovative strategies. b) To share creative and thought-provoking initiatives in all aspects of the management of urban heritage, including conservation, development and education. c) To encourage dialogue among stakeholders of heritage cities from a variety of backgrounds. d) To build a network of site managers, professionals working in heritage cities, and decision makers
