1 HISTORIC PRESERVATION EDUCATION GRANTS A Joint Program of Indiana Humanities and Indiana Landmarks 2011 AWARDS Indianapolis Fire Station 32 (Broad Ripple Firehouse) Brochure Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress, Indianapolis Chris Carlson, This grant will fund the design, layout and printing of a visitor's guide to the historic Broad Ripple Firehouse, dedicated in 1922 and recently nominated for the National Register. The brochure will be used for events in Broad Ripple such as the annual Historic Home Tour and the 175th Anniversary in 2012, as well as school visits. Grant: $1,720 The Monon Depot: We're Still Here Carmel Clay Historical Society, Carmel Virginia Terpening, A research and curriculum development project will explore the historical context of the 1883 Monon Depot in Carmel, Ind., now a museum. Project staff will also collect oral histories and offer school presentations on the successful "Save the Depot" preservation effort of the 1970s. Grant: $1,950 Washington Avenue Educational Brochure Department of Metropolitan Development, City of Evansville, Evansville Dennis Au, A walking tour brochure will focus on the Washington Avenue National Historic District in Evansville. The Alhambra Theater and many notable homes built from lie within the district. The city has recently established the Evansville Arts District at Haynie's Corner in this area as part of a redevelopment plan. East Spring Street Historic District - Midtown Walking Tour Brochure Develop New Albany, Inc., New Albany David C. Barksdale, The third in a series of walking tour brochures highlighting historic neighborhoods in New Albany will cover the Midtown district, a predominately residential area east of downtown. This district, with an eclectic mix of architectural styles from Italianate to Queen Anne to Arts and Crafts, is now undergoing revitalization through the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Grant: $1,250 Then and Now: A Downtown South Bend Architecture Walking Tour Downtown South Bend, Inc., South Bend Tamara Nicholl-Smith,

2 This grant will help to produce a cell phone audio tour of downtown South Bend, together with an updated brochure and map. The project will expand the reach of the popular guided tour program and highlight the history and significance of buildings in the city center. Farmland Historic District Preservation Design Guidelines Farmland Historic Preservation Commission, Farmland Theresa Cox, Design guidelines for Farmland, a Main Street community in western Randolph County, will be developed, published and made available to residents and business owners in the historic district. Also, an introductory presentation at the Farmland Cultural Center will educate property owners about the purpose of the guidelines and their practical use. Grant: $1,000 Greencastle Historic Districts Walking Tour Brochures Heritage Preservation Society of Putnam County, Greencastle Phillip J. Gick, Four brochures will encourage appreciation of the built environment of Greencastle, Ind. In addition to the turn of the century Courthouse Square, the brochures will highlight the Old Greencastle Historic District, Northwood Historic District, and Eastern Enlargement Historic District, which includes The Elms, the home of DePauw University's president. Indiana Lincoln Highway Interpretive Driving Guide Indiana Lincoln Highway Association, South Bend Joyce Chambers, This project will produce a printed driving guide to interpret the route and related historic sites along the Lincoln Highway, which crosses 11 counties in the northern part of the state. The guide will incorporate QR code technology, bar codes that, when scanned by a smart phone, take the user to a specific bit of information on the appropriate web page. South Bend African American Civil Rights Landmarks Tour Indiana University, South Bend Dr. Kevin Lamarr James, A tour guide to sites of importance in South Bend's African American Civil Rights history will be created. An outdoor map sign will be installed at the Engman Natatorium, the focus of a campaign against exclusion and segregation during the 1930s and 1940s and now the home of the Civil Rights Heritage Center. Architectural Tour of Historic Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Dee Reed, This grant will fund a walking tour brochure, slideshow and website about the buildings of Saint Mary-of-the- Woods College and the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Providence. Four generations of the Bohlen and Son 2

3 Architectural Firm completed more than 60 projects for the Sisters of Providence beginning in 1858, including all six college buildings. Grant: $1,725 Kiikiionka Eewansaapita - Fort Wayne Language and Culture Experience Whitley County Historical Society, Columbia City Dani Tippmann, A four-day summer experience in Native American Miami language and culture will be offered to children in northeast Indiana. The program, to be held on the campus of IPFW, will include learning about the architecture of early homes of the Miami chiefs and traditional wiikiami construction AWARDS Update of a Design Guide for the Historic District of Greenfield, Indiana City of Greenfield (Dec. 2010) Updated design guidelines and information on cost-effective techniques will be compiled to aid in Greenfield s downtown community development. The guide will be made available on city websites and presented in a public forum. Grant: $1,900 Explore Historic Crown Point Walking Tour Guide Crown Point Historic Preservation Commission, Crown Point (Sept. 2010) A new brochure will serve as a tool for self-guided walking tours of Crown Point s four locally designated historic districts: the Courthouse Square, Holley Residential, Sunnyside Residential, and Eastside Residential Historic Districts. The brochure, with an overview of each district s historic development and architectural styles, will also be available for download from the City of Crown Point s website. Grant: $1,850 Embassy Theatre Study Trips Embassy Theatre Foundation, Inc., Fort Wayne (Aug. 2010) The Embassy Theatre and Indiana Hotel opened in 1928, a movie/vaudeville palace coupled with a businessman s hotel in downtown Fort Wayne. This grant will help to support the Study Trip program, two-hour sessions combining a tour of the theatre with an opportunity for elementary school students to learn about the site s preservation by taking the stage to reenact the story of how the Embassy was saved from destruction. Home of the Wildcat, Instilling a Sense of Place Through the Chief Richardville House Fort Wayne History Center, Fort Wayne (July-Nov. 2010) Constructed in 1827, the home of Miami Indian Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville is an important Native American dwelling on the National Register of Historic Places. Five monthly editions of the Miami Indian Heritage Days series will be held at the Chief Richardville House, featuring three-fold presentations: structural/architectural, cultural/historical, and interpretive/interactive. 3

4 YEZ St. John's Hospital Historic Restoration Project Gary, East Chicago, Hammon Empowerment Zone, Gary (Oct. 2010) An educational two-minute DVD documentary and brochure on the history of St. John s Hospital will be created in conjunction with a recently launched Youth Empowerment Zone (YEZ) project. Located in Gary s Historic Midtown District, St. John s was the city s only African American hospital from 1929 until the mid 1940s. YEZ students will research and produce the DVD. It's a Gusher! Greenfield Historic Landmarks, Greenfield (Aug. 2010) The discovery of natural gas in 1887 began a period of prosperity in Greenfield and led to the building of important historic properties, such as the Hancock County Court House, Masonic Building, and Greenfield Banking Company. This project will use Reader s Theater to teach local third-graders about their town s history, industry, and architecture. Project co-sponsor: Greenfield Central School Corporation. Grant: $1,000 Building on Community: Stories from Historic Near Westside Places History Educators Network of Indiana / Indiana Association of Historians, Indianapolis (Summer 2010) Teachers from IPS Wendell Phillips Elementary School will participate in a collaborative workshop to create curriculum units on historic properties in Haughville on Indianapolis Near Westside. This neighborhood illustrates dynamic cultural transitions with successive German, Slovenian, African American, and Hispanic populations, anchored by St. Anthony and Holy Trinity Catholic Churches, the Slovene National Home, and Central State Hospital (now the Indiana Medical History Museum). Collaborators include the Indiana State Library and the Slovenian Cultural Society. Grant: $1,995 Muncie's Most Endangered Building Initiative Muncie Historic Preservation & Rehabilitation Commission, Muncie Public input will help to identify Muncie s ten most endangered buildings, and a poster will be created to encourage community awareness of the need for preservation of these properties. Presentations to local groups will further help to educate leaders and citizens about the benefits and challenges of historic preservation. Project co-sponsors: Delaware County Historical Society, Muncie Public Library. North Decatur High School Underground Railroad Initiative North Decatur High School, Greensburg (Nov. 2010) A brochure identifying key stops on the Underground Railroad in Decatur County will be created, and a tour of the sites will be organized in conjunction with North Decatur High School s fall Chautauqua event. Teacher John Pratt will guide his students in researching and producing the brochure, as well as mounting an exhibit for the student-created My Indiana Museum. The Decatur County Freedom Trails Association and the Historical Society of Decatur County will assist with the project. Restoration of the Warren County Historical Data Base Warren County Economic Development, Williamsport (June-Sept. 2010) 4

5 This project will restore images of historic properties and documents related to the history of Warren County to a historical data base that was damaged by a fire in Seeger High School students will work with the Warren County Historical Society and the Williamsport-Washington Township Public Library to carry out the project. Walking Through Time: Washington's Historic Homes Washington Catholic Schools, Washington (Aug.-Nov. 2010) Student photographs and drawings will be integrated into a walking tour brochure of historic homes in downtown Washington, Indiana, and a program about historic preservation will be presented at the school for students and the public. The project will also serve to provide online curriculum resources to schools throughout Indiana, encouraging the inclusion of historic architecture in art and history courses. Project cosponsors: Daviess County Chamber of Commerce, Daviess County Historical Society/Museum. Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway Interpretive Driving Guide Whitewater Canal Byway Association, Metamora (Dec. 2010) This driving guide will help visitors and residents explore the rich history of the Whitewater Valley by interpreting the sites of operational assets and historic structures that remain along the Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway. The newly designated byway follows the route of the canal from Lawrenceburg to Hagerstown in southeastern Indiana and part of southwestern Ohio. The project will show how the canal worked by illustrating locks, culverts, feeder dams, aqueducts, and tunnels, as well as mills, canal houses, and canal communities. SullivanMunce Cultural Center Curriculum Program Zionsville Center for Art, History & Genealogy, Inc., Zionsville (Jan.-June 2011) This grant will support the development of curriculum materials to expand a program on the history and architecture of the Town of Zionsville to 2nd grade classes. A Unit of study, training guide for teachers and volunteers, hands-on kits for classrooms, and walking tour/field trip materials are included in the plan. Participating students receive a take-away that allows them to guide family members and friends on the walking tour subsequent to their field trip Awards A Virtual Tour of the Historic Ambassador House and Heritage Gardens The Historic Ambassador House & Heritage Gardens, Fishers A 360 degree virtual tour of the Ambassador House and grounds will be added to the venue's website. The Ambassador House is partnering with the Fishers Cultural Alliance to encourage use of the building for lectures, literary readings, and other events. (Summer 2009) Grant: $600 Cemetery and Cemetery Landscape Conservation Conference 5

6 Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County, South Bend A three-day Cemetery and Cemetery Landscape Conference in South Bend will provide historical context, technical instruction, and guidance for developing archives, curriculum, and public programming related to historic cemeteries. (Sept , 2009) Geocaching Adventure on the Lincoln Highway Indiana Lincoln Highway Association, South Bend A state-of-the-art family activity that highlights historic sites related to the Lincoln Highway in northern Indiana will lead visitors along the route on a geocaching tour. In "geocaching" participants use GPS devices to locate the coordinates of containers bearing treasure or, in this case, historical information. (May 2010, kickoff event at Studebaker National Museum and Northern Indiana Center for History) If Walls Could Talk--Mystery at the Museum Historical Society of Porter County, Valparaiso Porter County Museum, an Italianate structure originally built as a residence in 1867, will be the setting and subject of a learning experience to be created for K-8 students. A Gothic Revival style jail was added to the structure in 1871 after it was purchased as the sheriff's residence. (Fall 2009) Madison Main Street Resource and Hotline Center Madison Main Street Program, Madison This grant will help Madison Main Street to update and develop its resource library to include books, technical documents, product information, and other guides on proper procedures for the repair and maintenance of the city's historic buildings. The sponsors will also host a workshop series on historic wood windows and energy efficiency. (Fall 2009, workshops) Grant: $1,205 Reducing Heating Costs in Residential Buildings Both Old and New Muncie Historic Preservation & Rehabilitation Commission, Muncie A one-day workshop on the science behind home heating loss and cost-effective methods to prevent it will help historic homeowners, design and construction personnel, and preservationists to gain practical information on this common problem. The event will be part of a community-wide effort to focus attention on sustainability. (Late summer/fall, 2009) Rensselaer Post Office Mural (# ) Prairie Arts Council, Rensselaer A brochure and public lecture program will tell the story of the Rensselaer Post Office's historic depression era mural, painted by John E. Costigan and installed in (Nov. 2009) Grant: $1,650 6

7 Re-raising the Barn Indiana State Fair Commission, Indianapolis A new 1/4 scale model of a pin frame barn will be fabricated for the Indiana State Fair Commission's educational outreach program. The model travels to schools where students can hammer pegs, fit mortises into tenons, and place rafters in their notches to "raise the barn." (Aug. 13, 2009, debut at State Fair's Heritage Day) Shapes of the Past Shelbyville Middle School, Shelbyville A curriculum unit on geometric design in architecture as it relates to the historic district of Shelbyville will guide students in researching local buildings using interactive technology. (May 2010) The President's Home: A Tour in Many Languages President Benjamin Harrison Foundation, Inc., Indianapolis An updated written version of the President Benjamin Harrison Home's daily tour will be prepared and translated into five languages--spanish, Chinese, Russian, French, and Japanese. (July 2009) Tour de Vincennes Knox County Public Library, Vincennes A walking tour brochure of the downtown Vincennes Historic District will educate residents and visitors about the architecture and history of the city's commercial and public buildings. (To be completed by May 2010) Wabash and Erie Canal Showcase of Historic Preservation Carroll County Wabash and Erie Canal, Inc., Delphi The Wabash and Erie Canal Park in Delphi, Indiana, and its Interpretive Center will gain an interactive multimedia showcase through this grant project. Narrative, pictures, maps, and video of the park's preserved structures, including three National Register sites, and historical reference material on Carroll County will be included. (To be completed by May 2010) Walkable, Rideable Whiting-Robertsdale Whiting-Robertsdale Community Improvement Corp., Whiting A booklet highlighting historic sites, buildings, and locations in Whiting-Robertsdale will guide visitors around the city, inform residents, and educate local high school and middle school students. (To be completed by summer 2010) 7

8 2008 AWARDS Curriculum Unit: Indiana's Historic Lincoln Highway Indiana Lincoln Highway Association, Inc., Fort Wayne A resource kit on the historic Lincoln Highway will be designed for teachers and students in Grades 3 and 4. The kit will focus on the Lincoln Highway in Indiana following the 1913 and 1928 routes from Fort Wayne to Valparaiso. The Student Activity Booklet will be available on the Web. (June 2009, kit available) Grant: $1,990 Early Building Techniques Workshop: A Case Study at Venoge Musee de Venoge, Inc., Vevay Early building techniques used in the construction of the Venoge cottage will be explained in a workshop to be held on the site. The building was part of the French-Swiss settlement in Switzerland County. (Sept. 20, 2008) Grant: $1,985 Downtown Greensburg Historic Building Marker Program Heart of the Tree City, Inc., Greensburg Bryan In celebration of Greensburg's sesquicentennial in 2009, buildings in the downtown historic district will be identified by markers with descriptive information. The research will be done by elementary classes guided by local preservation experts and organizations. (June 2009, completion and unveiling of markers) Historic Neighborhood Open Houses City of Noblesville, Historic Preservation Commission, Noblesville The Noblesville Historic Preservation Commission will sponsor open house information meetings for people in the Johnstown, Plum Prairie, and Gentlemen Farmers neighborhoods. The objective is to educate Old Town Noblesville residents about their homes' histories and the purpose of local historic districts. (May and September 2008, plus one date TBA) New Solutions for House Museums Association of Indiana Museums, Inc., Indianapolis A pre-conference workshop at the Association of Indiana Museums annual conference will offer successful new strategies for managing the challenges of historic home museums. (Aug. 24, 2008) Preservation What? A Primer to the Practices and Players of Heritage Preservation Ball State University, Muncie A primer on tools, terminology, and funding will be compiled for organizations that want to learn about the various public and private agencies that can assist with local preservation initiatives. 9 Writing Unlimited, Bloomington The Hinkle-Garten Farmstead and other preservation sites will be the venue for field trips and afterschool programs focused on historic people and places in Monroe County. (Sept June 2009) A Lafayette Handbook for Architectural Glazed Terra Cotta Wabash Valley Trust for Historic Preservation, Lafayette A user-friendly resource guide for owners of terra cotta buildings will be based on public presentations by national authorities. (Aug. 2008) Grant: $1m AWARDS CIAA Salute to AIA 150th Columbus Indiana Architectural Archives, Columbus A symposium at the Columbus Learning Center will bring together architecture professionals to reflect on design and the unique built environment of Columbus, Indiana. The symposium and accompanying exhibit will be an American Institute of Architecture (AIA) 150th Anniversary sponsored event. Cosponsors include the Columbus Area Visitors Center, Columbus Museum of Art & Design, Columbus Area Arts Council, Lincoln Central Family Neighborhood Center, and AIA. (Oct , 2007) Grant: $1,000 Walking Tour Brochure Series #1 Develop New Albany, New Albany A walking tour brochure of New Albany's Downtown National Register District will be produced in this grant project. The tour will encompass approximately 45 buildings and also provide information on the city's Historic Preservation Commission. Grant: $1,250 Farrington's Grove Historical District Walking Tour Brochure Farrington's Grove Historical District, Inc., Terre Haute Farrington's Grove is the oldest surviving neighborhood in Terre Haute, bounded by 4th and 7th Streets, from Poplar to Hulman Streets. An updated guide to the district, composed of elegant nineteenth and twentiethcentury houses, workers' "shotgun" cottages and bungalows, and public buildings, will be published. Cosponsors are Terre Haute Landmarks, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, Vigo Co. Historical Society, and Vigo Co. Public Library. (Available in fall 2007) Guide to Jasper County Historic Structures and Points of Interest Historic Preservation Association of Jasper County, Rensselaer This project will gather together information about Jasper County's historic structures and points of interest. The material will be organized with photographs, maps, and descriptions into a brochure that will be made widely available to visitors and residents of the county. Grant: $860 9

10 West Washington Walk Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend West Washington was once the fashionable address of many of South Bend's most notable citizens; it includes Tippecanoe Place, the former home of Clement Studebaker. This project will produce a printed brochure, a PDF that can be hosted on partner websites, a downloadable podcast for a narrated tour, and a reference material for a guided tour. Grant: $1,925 Bridges to the Future: Indiana's Covered Bridges in the 21st Century Indiana State University Library, Terre Haute A half-day public program will invite Hoosiers to learn more about the history and preservation of Indiana's nineteenth-century covered bridges. The fall 2007 conference will be cosponsored by the Parke County Historical Society. Hunting History: A Geocaching Guide through Crawford County Knowledge Quest Associates, Inc., Georgetown A geocache consists of a waterproof container hidden at a site but discoverable using GPS coordinates. Finding these caches is a popular hobby, which will serve as an introduction to Crawford County's historic sites. A treasure map brochure, to be distributed by the Crawford County Tourism Board, and lesson plans for 4th grade students will be developed. (July 28, 2007, kickoff event) My Stay at the Hattle Hotel LaCasa of Goshen, Inc., Goshen Goshen's Hattle Hotel dates back to the 1860s. After many years of decline, it was acquired by LaCasa of Goshen and rehabilitated as apartments for low to moderate income residents. This project will showcase the hotel's history by mounting a permanent exhibit of historic photographs, newspaper articles, and artifacts in the hotel's lobby. (Dec. 7, 2007, opening event) Lanier Mansion's Right Angle: Everyday Math and Architectural Design for 1840s Greek Revivals Lanier Mansion Foundation, Madison The purpose of this program is to excite and educate students about architecture, design, math, and their communities by exposing them to real issues in historic architecture and preservation at the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site. Middle schools in Jefferson and Switzerland Counties in Indiana and Trimble County, Kentucky, will participate in a pilot during the school-year. Grant: $1,880 Main Street Brookville, Inc. Design Review Guidelines Main Street Brookville, Inc., Brookville This grant will help the Main Street Brookville Design Committee to draft, print, and present guidelines for the restoration and improvement of the town's commercial district. 10

11 Indiana's Hidden Treasures: Culturally Significant Landscapes in the Hoosier State Marian College, Indianapolis An illustrated educational brochure will feature 10 to 12 historic landscapes and properties in Indiana. A website will also be developed for the benefit of educators, tourists, gardeners, historians, preservationists, conservationists, and others interested in learning about Indiana's historically and culturally significant landscapes. Rush County Historic Tours Brochures Heart of Rushville, Rushville The Heart of Rushville organization will develop tour brochures with maps and information on the county's distinctive buildings and notable historic features. Grant: $1, AWARDS Dearborn County Historic Structures Dearborn County GIS, Lawrenceburg Project staff will update and complete a GIS database by photographing, cataloging, and recording the GPS location points of outstanding and notable structures in Dearborn County. The database will be available to the public, and maps will be made and displayed at the county's high schools and libraries. Siekman Park Historic Homestead Educational Materials Project Historic Hoosier Hills, Rising Sun The Denver Siekman Environmental Park is a 64-acre outdoor facility which includes the buildings of an early nineteenth-century homestead. An activity guide will be produced, targeted to students in the 4th-8th grades, with lessons that are inspired by and interact with the historic buildings. Exploring Elkhart's Roots with Ruthmere Ruthmere, Elkhart Third grade curriculum materials will be developed to help students learn about continuity and change in their local community. A virtual tour of key buildings, monuments, and areas in the Beardsley Avenue Historic District will tell the story of the city's origins in a way that is exciting and meaningful to children. Georgetown Neighborhood Interpretive Guide Historic Madison, Inc., Madison Madison was one of Indiana's largest cities during the mid-nineteenth century. During this period free African Americans were living in the Georgetown neighborhood on the city's northeast side, and they played an important role in the Underground Railroad movement. A walking tour guide to this still-intact area will interpret its rich history. 11

12 Historic Landmark District Educational Brochures Madison Main Street Program, Inc., Madison A brochure will be printed and distributed to illustrate the importance of protecting Madison's nationally significant collection of historic architecture. Methods for the proper care and maintenance of the downtown's historic buildings will be explained for the benefit of new property owners, realtors, citizen groups, and students. Investigation of Local Ordinances and Commissions for Protecting Historic Properties in the City of Martinsville City of Martinsville, Martinsville Project sponsors will present a series of educational sessions for the Martinsville City Council, Plan Commission, and local residents about how other Indiana communities have used conservation districts, historic preservation commissions, and local zoning ordinances to protect historic resources. They will compare notes with Crawfordsville and New Albany, among other Hoosier towns. The Lincoln Highway: Indiana's Visionaries and America's First Coast-to-Coast Auto Road Marshall County Historical Society, Plymouth A traveling exhibit will tell the story of Indiana's visionary automobile and business leadership, who worked together to establish the Lincoln Highway Association and create the Lincoln Highway across the state in The exhibit, which will be displayed in libraries, museums, and other venues, will also highlight historic buildings along the route. Grant: $2000 Teaching Regional History Minnetrista, Muncie Minnetrista will partner with the Center for Historic Preservation at Ball State University and the Muncie Public Library to offer three teacher professional development workshops during the school year. Each workshop will cover a period in Muncie's history and architecture, including Native Americans and settlement, the Gas Boom era, and the years Update of 'Wegweiser: A Self-Guided Tour of German-American Sites in Indianapolis' Indiana German Heritage Society, Inc., Indianapolis Many Indianapolis landmarks were the work of architects with German backgrounds, who also shaped the character of neighborhood clusters of German-American vintage. The former Germantown (now Lockerbie Square), Wholesale District, and other downtown places will be included in an updated and enlarged brochure and self-guided tour of these sites. 13 Curriculum materials for middle and high school students will help them understand the patchwork quilt of Adams County's diverse German-American communities, read ethnic markers in the landscape, and describe the area's past though its historic structures. A prime example is the Wyneken House in northwest Adams County, the home of community leader and Lutheran pastor Friedrich Conrad Dietrich Wyneken ( ) and his wife Sophie. 13
