Instant Hedging The natural way to screen Instant thick hedges using Mature Specimen Hedge Plants We have had extensive experience with Garden and landscape design work in urban and rural settings where there was a desperate need for instant natural screening to create privacy, blocking a new development or security. In response to this need, we have developed a number of very effective natural screening options to blend into the setting and the overall design. One of the most effective and simplest installation screening methods, is the use of mature instant hedging, as featured in this article. Other natural screening options that we have developed include Pleached trees, Bamboo screens and mixed evergreen tree landscaping. Please call us for other pdf s in our natural screening series. If you require an established mature hedge with a depth of up to 70cm, we can supply a number of Evergreen and Deciduous species. These ready-clipped plants will provide an instant, dense hedge up to 2 metres high and cm thick, which can be then trimmed to shape to produce an elegant established appearance.
Deciduous and Evergreen Hedge species available as these instant units. All specimens are field grown and then made available as bare-root or root-ball to be planted to produce an instant continuous hedge The plants have been clipped twice a year to form sturdy, densely leaved, bushy plants. These are ready to plant, forming a mature, solid, pre-formed hedge. We can supply a choice of 16 different hardy species/varieties, including Western Red Cedar, (Thuja plicata) as an infinitely better coniferous alternative to Leylandii. Carpinus betulus( Hornbeam) and Taxus baccata (Yew) ready for lifting to create a mature instant hedge We have most hedging species grown as full specimens at a range of sizes up to 1.8m and some species up to 3.5m in height
Hedging Species available as mature units Deciduous Barberry Red Beech Green Beech Purple Cherry Red Cotoneaster Hornbeam Coniferous Western Red Cedar Thuja plicata Evergreen Eleagnus Holly variegated Holly Green Honeysuckle Osmanthus Photinia Red Robin Golden Privet Green Privet Viburnum Although planting bare root or root-ball is the most economical method to plant, they are only available during the non-growing season from mid to late November to early spring before the sap rises. To create a mature hedge at any time of the year, we have most species available grown in pots or troughs. These plants are all supplied with complete mature root systems ready to plant out for perfect hedges.
Our trough hedge units, with their fully developed root systems, make the planting of an instant hedge easy work. Depending upon species they are available in 100 long cm troughs; 35cm to 150cm high. Photinia Red Robin Grisselina maritimun Grisselinia litoralis Taxus baccata
Low panels for larger instant natural hedging and screening In some of our design work we found that there was a need for planting a higher natural screen sometimes up to 3m. Although we can supply high root-ball and container specimens, we found that a neater and more effective instant screen could be achieved if the specimens were grown on panels, as shown below. Our hedging nurseries have now perfected this panel system for a number of species, including : Hornbeam, Beach, Laurel, Hazel, Parthenocissus, Laurel, Quercus ilex, Hedera, Trachelospernum. Eleagnus and Photinia Red Robin
Mychorrhizal fungi and the importance of a good root system for viability and healthy plants Whatever the size of hedge or screen that you plant there is always a natural loss of some of plants, particularly if they are planted as bare root or root-ball. The best way to avoid or minimise such losses is to create a healthy root system. In nature all healthy root systems form important symbiotic relationships with natural beneficial microscopic fungi. This is nature s way to enormously increase the plants ability to absorb water and uptake essential minerals from the soil, as well as inhibit the development of harmful soil borne micro-organisms. During the cultivation processes in hygeinic nurseries, these beneficial fungi are lost from the soil, but now specialist microbiology labs have isolated these fungal species and made them available as a commercial product used by the trade and supplied in landscaper packs for professional planting of hedges and trees. The product is known as Rootgrow and is available in good garden centres in small retail packs. If would like to purchase the landscaper sized packs at trade prices, which is by far the most economical way of purchasing it, particularly for larger projects, please call us or order on line at: As Rootgrow is effective to enhance the growth and development and health of most plant species, the sealed tubs enable you to store it for many years for future planting projects. These packs are also supplied with the ingredients to produce a gel for easier application of Rootgrow to the root system of you plants.
Instant screens grown on security mesh frames Benefits The Green Screen is a very cost effective solution to most sensitive perimeter issues. The benefits include:- 1. Instant security provided by a 5mm galvanized welded mesh steel security fence. Completely confounds potential intruders. 2. Can be easily maintained to not grow above the designated height 3. Instant privacy as the plants, typically Hedera Ivy, are fully grown when shipped 4. A wide range of applications including building cladding and graffiti prevention. 5. Ideal for regeneration schemes and Sustainable Suburbia 6. Very low maintenance and the product s appearance only improves with time 7. Favoured over boundary walls by Local Planning Authorities to facilitate water movement, impeded by wall foundations. This is becoming more significant for planning permission. 8. In addition to keeping intruders out, it is a cost effective and aesthetic means of keeping children and pets safely within your property boundary.
Vertical Screening Suggested Uses Urban Screening 1. Garden and playgrounds 2. Office and parking 3. Graffiti prevention and Highways 4. Buildings and cladding 5. Roof gardens and hard-standing 6. Visual impact screening to 4m in height 7. Smoking Shelters 8. Screening unsightly air conditioning systems
A recent commission we undertook of to solve the visual impact created by a newly installed air conditioning system.
Natural Security Screen Species All species are supplied as mature plants on the 5mm galvanised high carbon steel frames growing in biodegradable coir troughs. They are all covered by a Ten year guarantee. The following species and heights are available on screens: Hedera (Ivy) can be supplied at 1.20m wide x 1.0, 1.8 & 2.2m high, and can be supplied a standard green variety or variegated form. Carpinus betulus (Hornbeam) 1.0m wide x 1.0m high & 1.2m wide x 1.55m high; Fagus sylvatica (Beech) Pyrocantha Dart s Red Ligustrum Liga 1.0m wide x 1.0m high & 1.2m wide x 1.55m high; 1.0m wide x 1.0m high 1.2m wide x 1.55m high Each Species is grown on Galvanised steel weld mesh in 100% biodegradable Cocopot (Coir) The cocopot can be planted directly in your soil or compost, where it will biodegrade and add further organic structure to aid healthy growth.
Designer Wendy Allen with BBC Gardener s World Presenters Our Instant Natural screens featured in the Gold medal Best Sustainable Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Show 2009
East of Eden Troughs If screening is required in soil free locations, such as balconies, and roof gardens, the Cocopot can be planted into a trough. We can now supply industry standard wooden troughs, as featured in the case study or constructed of a specialised commercial polycarbonate (GRP). To optimise healthy plant growth, they can be supplied or installed by us with a high quality irrigation system. Although our troughs are made specifically to house the instant screen system, they are designed for use with any of the other natural screen plants featured earlier, from bareroot hedging to clipped tall panels. Our wooden troughs can be finished in a range of wood stains and the GRP troughs can be supplied in any colour from an RAL chart. All our troughs can be made to other dimensions and shapes if required to suit your project.
Whether your screening needs are for your own personal privacy or you have an ambitious project such as the O 2 Millenium Dome... for guidance about any of our instant natural screening options, please call us on or complete a request form found at
