In the motherland, it will be like a green beating heart when their current and future homesteads are reunited. With this green beating heart, we believe, giant pandas will be together with human friends, and they will be full of freedom and optimism.

2 Power of The Green Heart Voice of Giant Panda With large scale of human activities, we have faced threats from habitat fragmentation, loss and degeneration. And also with human friends help, our homesteads are getting green, our teams are getting bigger, and our friends are getting reunion. But so far as now, our life is not safe. Nor will it ever. We still face many challengeable threats. We are isolated into many patches, and difficult to access from one to another. To our luck, we are now on the way of going home. In the motherland, it will be like a green beating heart when our current and future homesteads are reunited. With this green beating heart, we believe, we will be together with human friends, and we will be full of freedom and optimism. The Green Heart of China is an ultimate hope for us all.

4 Project Highlights An English Booklet for the 3 rd National Survey Report on Giant Panda Will be Released Soon The 3 rd National Survey Report on Giant Panda in China (NSRGP), conducted in 1999 to 2003, is important and basic guidelines for field conservations of giant pandas. However, it is very limited for international readers, conservators and decision-makers to comprehensively know about important information in this report for language obstacle since it is in Chinese. The translation of NSRGP, executed by Dr. Zhang Qiong from Institute of Zoology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is going well, and will be available soon. The English booklet will summarize the important information on status of giant pandas. It also includes informative tables and figures. The release of this booklet play very important roles in helping international conservators deeply know the conservation status of giant pandas.

5 Project Highlights Clearer Objectives Set for International Components Several workshops were successfully opened in Dec 2007 for International Components. The executors and WWF project managers set clearer objectives and outputs for all activities. Five activities will be signed for their 3-party contracts in Jan The objective of impact of Lanzhou-Chongqing expressway and railway in Minshan and the proposed Yangxian-Taibai highway in Qinling on giant panda and its habitats executed by Dr. Li Junsheng, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, is that by RS, GIS and GPS and use of the principles and methods of landscape ecology, road ecology and conservation ecology, the current distributions of giant panda, niche quality and landscape patterns in scopes area along three ways will be analyzed, and then respectively to evaluate the impact of these roads on giant panda and its habitats at population and landscape scales will be evaluated, and constructive proposals as the countermeasures and references coordinating to the protection of habitat and economical construction will be proposed. The objective of impact of mining on giant panda and its habitats in Minshan landscape executed by Mr. Wei Fuwen from Institute of Zoology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences is to determine the extent to which mining activities during the past two decades have altered the overall landscape structure, and especially the patch structure of forest, within a representative portion of the Minshan Mountains, and to analysis the changing of landscape structure at four spatial scales to assess the effects of scale, and to compute habitat suitable maps to gain further insight into the determinants of habitat utilization and distribution of high habitat suitability of the giant panda.

6 Project Highlights --continued The objective of review of national policies/programs and legislations implemented within giant panda landscapes executed by Mr. Wu Jianping from Northeastern Forest University is to analysis the current national and provincial polices and regulations relevant to giant panda conservations, supplementary documents and standards suited to implementation of those national polices and regulations, and national and provincial programs and their related policies and regulations relevant to giant panda conservations, and propose valuable suggestions for improvements of current policies/programs and legislations relevant to giant panda conservations. The objective of evaluation on WWF giant panda monitoring program is executed by Mr. Li Baoguo from Northwest University is to provide an overall understanding of the current monitoring and patrolling works conducted by different natural reserves, to summarize the pros and cons of current monitoring and patrolling activities, and to provide suggestions for future monitoring and patrolling works to related Chinese governments. The objective of giant panda habitat conservation and gap analysis in Qinling and Minshan is to find potential gaps of habitats through analysis the present situations of giant panda and its habitat conservations and to propose the conservation strategies to essential corridors, and food resource risks.
