4 VINIFERA AN UNDERGROUND WINERY IN LOUISIANA A programmatic hybrid of farm, villa, factory, and interpretive center, the winery has a close and provocative relationship between landscape and architecture. Today, the attraction of the winery as a tourist destination, a locale for cultural events (especially music) and dining as well as interpretive tours of the wine-making facility itself, embeds within this hybrid program a narrative public itinerary intertwined with the productive cycle. The site is located on a 34.5 acre stretch of land rising from the coastal plain of South Louisiana, on the North Shore of New Orleans. The proposal of a new building and adjacent landscape for the currently existing Pontchatrain Vineyards will replace those currently in place. This project will aim to attract a larger client base, and will make winery visits a holistic experience through the exploration of the relationship between production and visitor experience. A choreographed tour through the site and building will give visitors a full sense of the interconnection between the site s features, and their architectural extensions.

8 INTER-FUSING ARCHITECTURE ARCHITECTURE S ROLE IN RE-INTEGRATION & COMMUNITY REPARATION Community means face to face contact and interaction. It focuses on bringing people together rather than isolating them -Nan Ellin, Architecture of Fear Architecture has the potential to create communities between contentious groups of people. Architects today can act as mediators in the integration of opposing segments of society through design. The peace agreement between Colombia s largest guerrilla group known as the FARC and the Colombian government has demonstrated the need for a reintegration model that relocates combatants back into their original communities. An architectural intervention can mediate the transition of former child-soldiers back into communities through a design proposal that provides integration, rehabilitation, and safety. Rehabilitation & Community Reparation on the Hillside. The site is located on the hillside of Comuna 1 in Medellin, Colombia. Precarious landscape, extreme poverty, informal settlement, marginalization, and violence characterize this area. In contrast to these brutalities, the project will provide residents with safe housing, as well as spaces for educational and recreational activities. The project is designed to create a structural framework that can be infi lled as the community s needs arise and as funding becomes available. This allows for a diversity in program which evolves through time and therefore can increase the level of reintegration. The architect plays an essential role in the facilitation and has a unique opportunity to help unify the community by guiding them through a collaborative building process. The construction of their rehabilitation site, is meant to serve as a form of rehabilitation in and of itself.
