1 Chesapeake Conservation Corps Corps Member Placements Travis Anthony, National Aquarium in Baltimore Travis will serve his year at the National Aquarium in Baltimore where he will support activities focused around climate change and resiliency and urban conservation and diversity. While at the Aquarium, Travis will participate in efforts including community based habitat restoration, citizen science opportunities, collecting data on urban biodiversity and water quality of Baltimore s Inner Harbor, and community outreach and stewardship activities. Prior to joining the Corps, Travis has been working with the Maryland Park Service as a Seasonal Ranger at Gunpowder Falls State Park helping with trail maintenance and other assignments around the Park. Michael Bowman, U.S. National Park Service Michael will serve his year at the U.S. National Park Service where he will develop an inventory of lesson plans related to the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, identify relevant lesson plans for the NPS website, assist with the development of a new Junior Ranger program for the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, and participate in outreach through the Kids in Kayaks program and the Roving Ranger, their mobile visitor center that travels to public festivals. Prior to joining the Corps, Michael was working with the Chesapeake Conservancy. He is a recent graduate from Salisbury University with a degree in Environmental Studies and a minor in History. Emily Castle, Adkins Arboretum Ridgely, Caroline County Emily, who majored in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Chesapeake Regional Studies at Washington College, has a passion for ecological landscape design, permaculture, and the connection between plants and people which she discovered through her studies, internships, and involvement with the campus s garden. While at Adkins Arboretum she will play key roles in meadow, woodland and wetland conservation and restoration, education of over 1500 school children who will visit the Arboretum, and the cultivation of thousands of native plants in the Arboretum s nursery and demonstration gardens. Kaila Cavanaugh, Accokeek Foundation Accokeek, Prince George s County Kaila will spend her year with the Accokeek Foundation supporting the management of the farm and educational programs, including 4-H, Agriculture Conservation Corps, and AgLab. During her year, she will participate in livestock management in support of the National Food Forest regenerative agriculture operations and educational outreach across the Foundation, including the National Colonial Farm and Museum Garden, as well as the surrounding fields and forest and wetlands. Kaila has -1-
2 interned with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and is a graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University where she studied Environmental Studies with a minor in Business. Evan Claggett, Environmental Concern St. Michael s, Talbot County During his placement at Environmental Concern Evan will assist in all aspects of environmental restoration, including site assessments, survey, design, construction, planting, and monitoring. During his year, he will also support Environmental Concern s nursery operations and propagation as well as their environmental education programs. Evan is a recent graduate from Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina where he focused on tropical reef biology. He has studied abroad in Jamaica and Bonaire where he published a couple of research papers and is also an avid scuba diver with rescue diving certifications. Megan Davis, Maryland Department of Natural Resources MD Biological Stream Survey Megan is a recent graduate from Millersville University with a major in Biology with dual concentrations in Marine Biology and Environmental Biology. Throughout the next year Megan will be expanding her environmental field experience by assisting a research team with their aquatic conservation efforts to restore freshwater mussels in the Patapsco River. She will also be supporting the biodiversity, geomorphological, and water quality surveying through the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS). The goal is to provide the best possible information for the protection and restoration of Maryland's stream ecological resources. Jennifer Duvall, Patapsco Heritage Greenway Ellicott City, Howard County During her placement at Patapsco Heritage Greenway Jennifer will be responsible for assisting the stream team volunteers in environmental stewardship activities, managing the Stream Watchers program, assist with the new pet waste behavior change campaign, lead environmental education and workshops, participate in joint programs and projects with environmental partners, and use GIS to map and document sites. Jennifer recently graduated from University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Environmental Science and Geography. She has experience studying urban forest dynamics and plant communities in residential yard in Baltimore City. Brianna Fragata, Maryland Coastal Bays Program Berlin, Worcester County Brianna will lead programs to engage individuals in restoration work such as tree and living shoreline plantings and invasive species removal during her time at the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. She will also conduct water quality monitoring, oyster gardening, wetland restoration, anadromous fish sampling, and monitoring Atlantic white cedar forests. Brianna recently graduated from Hood College with a degree in Environmental Science and Policy with a concentration in coastal and watershed studies. While in school, she conducted bacterial monitoring, a forest recreation study, and built a vegetable rain garden, and interned with the University of Maryland Horn Point Laboratory. Leah Franzluebbers, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service During her year with the Corps, Leah will assist with the habitat protection and restoration, habitat assessment, wildlife surveys and monitoring, and environmental education and outreach. She will also have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national trainings to enhance her skills and -2-
3 knowledge. Leah recently graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA with a degree in Environmental Science and Political Science. Over the summer she has been working as a research assistant at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, CO on a project studying caddisfly range shifts. Brittany Furlong, Maryland Department of Natural Resources MD Biological Stream Survey Brittany is a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in Environmental Science with a GIS certificate and was a GIS intern for the Department of City Planning in Pittsburgh. Throughout the next year Brittany will be expanding her environmental field experience by assisting a research team in measuring stream and storm flow and conducting geomorphological surveys including estimating Bank Erodibility Hazard Index and Near Bank Stress. She will also be supporting the partnerships with outside agencies to track and compile monitoring data and to interpret complex results in a way that is meaningful for diverse audiences. Justin Gallardo, Uptown Metro Ministry Group During his placement with Uptown Metro Ministry Group, Justin will work to encourage and guide water conservation initiatives in each of the 12 churches in the Ministry Group. This will involve rotating attendance at churches in the group on Sunday mornings, speaking and leading educational programs, and working with interested members or groups in those churches to improve conservation. Prior to joining the Corps, Justin graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in Environmental Science & Policy and has since worked for UMD s transportation department as well as being active with the Sierra Club Maryland Chapter and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network. S. Sophia Grossweiler, Maryland Department of the Environment Sophia recently graduated from Rice University in Houston, TX with a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering with a specialization in Environmental Engineering. She has an interest in water treatment technologies as well as sustainable development. While at Maryland Department of the Environment this year Sophia will be working with the Integrated Water Planning Program (IWPP) developing databases, creating Sediment TMDL guidance documents, analyzing monitoring data to demonstrate improving trends in water quality, and conducting GIS analysis of urban areas to determine impervious area already treated by surrounding land types. Thomas Heffernan, Living Classrooms Foundation During his year Thomas will be working with the Living Classrooms Foundation to help develop and implement k-12 environmental education programs for Baltimore City schools including classroom outreach and field trips to Masonville Cove Environmental Education Campus, assist with environmental enhancement and restoration projects at schools and in the local community including gardening, greenhouse projects, and tree plantings, and engage with the general public through a variety of outreach programs. Thomas is a recent graduate from Washington College with a major in Environmental Studies and a minor in Primary Education. Lucy Heller, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay During the course of Lucy s year, she will be working with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to -3-
4 help develop, promote, and execute volunteer centric activities as a part of three distinct programs: Project Clean Stream (trash cleanups), Prince George's Tree Champions (tree plantings), and the Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative (water quality monitoring). Through these programs, she will engage with community groups to build their capacity and further their stewardship efforts while meeting their own project goals. Lucy is a recent graduate from the College of Wooster in Ohio where she majored in English. Kelly Johnson, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service For her year at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Kelly will be assisting with habitat protection and restoration, habitat assessment, wildlife surveys and monitoring, and environmental education and outreach. She will also have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national trainings to enhance her skills and knowledge. Kelly recently graduated from Cornell University in New York where she studied entomology. At school she interned for the USDA Areawide Project analyzing blood and tick collection from wild mice and the Cornell Botanic Gardens assisting in horticulture operations. Andrew Jones, Town of Edmonston Edmonston, Prince George s County Andrew is a recent graduation from Salisbury University with a degree in Biology and Environmental Science with a marine concentration. He is interested in public policy and has worked in the Maryland state house and volunteered on a gubernatorial campaign as a canvasser and phone banker. This year he will help in engaging the Town of Edmonston with additional green initiatives as well as developing environmental summer school programs for students, designing extensions on existing trails, developing green street policies for future development and working with the Town's urban forestry. Shayna Keller, South River Federation Edgewater, Anne Arundel County Shayna graduated from Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina with a degree in Marine Science. After graduation, she for worked for Walt Disney World on the Animals, Science, and Environmental team as a marine conservation educator. For her year with the Corps, Shayna will be working on environmental restoration including the design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of small and large scale restoration projects. She will also monitor tidal water quality sampling streams on a regular basis and leading the summer Operation Clearwater program to test bacteria in swimming water and assist with management of our Marylanders Grow Oysters program. Jay Kinnaman, Maryland Environmental Service Millersville, Anne Arundel County Jay will serve his year in the Geospatial & Engineering Services (GES) division where he will work on a variety of watershed restoration projects associated with stormwater planning, design, and monitoring. He will work with partners from MDOT to municipalities and will use GIS for planning, implementing, and evaluating stormwater projects throughout the State. Prior to joining the Corps, Jay graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Environmental Science & Technology and a minor in Computer Science. Alexander Kirchhof, Mayor & City Council of Cumberland -4-
5 Cumberland, Allegany County Alexander will assist with urban tree care including tree care, plantings, and community outreach, support forest management and outreach tasks related to the protection of the City s drinking water source, and conduct community outreach in regards to solid waste and recycling, drinking water distribution and wastewater collection. Alexander graduated from the Frostburg State University with a degree in Environmental Analysis and Planning. Recently he has worked with the Department of Mines on developing a remediation strategy for the Kempton Mine Complex through the process of bioremediation. Amy Kochel, Susquehanna Heritage Corporation Wrightsville, PA Amy will work with the Susquehanna Heritage Corporation to help connect people to the history, ecology, and natural beauty of the Susquehanna River. She specifically will assist in enhancing programs, interpretation, and exhibits relating to the Susquehanna River s ecology and American Indian legacy at our riverside National Park Service Visitor Contact Station and our river trails center. Amy recently graduated from Juniata College in Pennsylvania where she studied Environmental Science. Prior to the Corps, she has worked as a camp counselor helping to supervise and facilitate activities that connect children to nature. Connor Liu, The Nature Conservancy Cumberland, Allegany County Connor recently graduated from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania with a degree in Environmental Science. Throughout college he helped lead environmental education programs in at Assateague, supporting sea turtle conservation in Hawaii, and working as a research assistant in Mozambique. This year with The Nature Conservancy, Connor will support database management and outreach for family forest landowner engagement. He will also help with native plantings, invasive species control, trail maintenance, forest management, ecological monitoring, and many other varied stewardship activities. Jamie Mancini, Sultana Education Foundation Chestertown, Kent County During Jamie s year in the Corps she will help lead k-12 kayak/canoe paddling programs, support the seventh grade Watershed Watch program including classroom outreach and field trips, help design and implement community programs and events, assist with the implementation of experiential land-based and water-based summer programs, and support the daily maintenance of the Center s aquariums and terrariums. Jamie is a recent graduation from Gonzaga University with a degree in Environmental Studies. She has experience working as a Ropes Coordinator and Camp Counselor at Kennolyn Camps supervising and facilitating a variety of outdoor activities for children. Zoe Maymon, Maryland Department of the Environment Zoe recently graduated from University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a degree in Geography with a minor in Mathematics. She has experience in GIS software, data analysis, information technology, and database management. While at Maryland Department of the Environment this year Zoe will be working with Stormwater Sediment & Dam Safety (SSDS) conducting fieldwork and data collection of type and locations of stormwater best management practices, assisting with data entry and database management, and helping with outreach to local, state, and federal jurisdictions. -5-
6 Syler Merski, Friends of Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum Saint Leonard, Calvert County Syler will assist the Friends of Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum with a range of activities including developing and implementing public programs that focus on the area s environmental history and cultural landscape, support existing sixth grade environmental education programming through a partnership with CHESPAX, assisting with public and summer camps facilitating hands-on educational programming, and serving as an interpretative staff at the Woodland Indian Village, Visitor Center, and Farm Exhibit Building. Syler is a recent graduate from Huntingtown High School. Jesus Munoz Buenrostro, Southeast Community Development Corp During his year, Jesus will help provide community members with the tools to manage issues affecting their quality of life. Specifically he will focus on green-space management and sustainability issues and family and student engagement. Jesus will also help manage student green teams in an effort to cultivate the next generation of neighborhood stewards who will create and care for green spaces keeping neighborhoods healthy and vibrant. Jesus is a recent graduation from University of Baltimore studying Environmental Sustainability and Human Ecology and last year worked at Baltimore City Council as a Legislative and Community Engagement Intern. Kelly Peaks, UMD Environmental Finance Center College Park, Prince George s County Kelly recently graduated from Marist College in New York majoring in Environmental Science with a policy concentration and just finished interning with the American Meteorological Society where she produced a paper on Environmental Gentrification. Kelly will be working with the Sustainable Maryland program where she will help specific communities develop watershed restoration plans, coordinate demonstration projects, or create an energy baseline. She will also provide support for these communities as they move through the certification process and develop effective sustainability case studies. Rachel Plescha, ShoreRivers Easton, Talbot County During her year at ShoreRivers, Rachel will assist with water quality monitoring and analysis including training and managing water quality volunteers. She will also assist in elementary and high school environmental education programs including field trips and classroom lessons, work closely with watershed scientist to identify, implement, and study retrofit opportunities, and assist with ShoreRivers's oyster restoration and volunteer SAV program. Rachel recently graduated from the College of William & Mary in Virginia with a degree in International Environmental Policy and a minor in Economics. Arianna Russo, Maryland Coastal Bays Program Berlin, Worcester County Arianna will lead programs to engage individuals in restoration work such as tree and living shoreline plantings and invasive species removal during her time at the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. She will also participate in the design and implementation of environmental educational programs, field trips, and activities at education sites. She will work on developing a minority-based summer camp for high school students and creating lesson plans to be included in the first-ever Coastal Bays curriculum. Arianna recently graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Marine Biology. -6-
7 Marissa Sayers, Central Baltimore Partnership Marissa will help the team for the Jones Falls Valley revitalization initiative in developing an environmental strategic action plan and tackling short-term improvements. She will also manage the Spruce-Up Grant Program conducting community outreach and facilitating greening and quality-oflife projects. Marissa graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Architecture, and while studying became very interested in the role design plays in confronting issues in social and environmental contexts. Over the past year, she served in AmeriCorps with Neighborhood Housing Services in Baltimore supporting their work to help low-income clients gain financial stability. Cheyenne Sebold, C&O Canal Trust Hagerstown, Washington County During her year in the Corps, Cheyenne will assist with the preservation of the C&O Canal National Historical Park through community engagement and volunteer management as well as monitoring and maintenance of the 20,000 acres of Potomac River shoreline. Cheyenne recently graduated from Towson University with a degree in Environmental Science and a minor in Biology. She has past experience with stream monitoring and assessments as well as the installation of a pollinator garden and small food forest on her school s campus Dominic Serino, Audubon Maryland-DC Dominic will work at Audubon Maryland-DC during his year with the Corps, where he will play a key science and outreach role in two major conservation projects: a tidal marsh climate resilience project in Dorchester County and the Important Bird Areas Program which aims to protect birds and their habitats at the most essential sites for birds across Maryland. Dominic will help with fieldwork surveying birds and vegetation, conduct spatial analyses and mapmaking in GIS, and support volunteer recruitment and training. Dominic recently graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Environmental Science and concentration in Applied Ecology. Justin Shapiro, National Wildlife Federation Justin will serve his year at the National Wildlife Federation where he will assist with projects that help communities use nature to reduce the impacts of climate threats to people and wildlife. Specifically, he will help implement an oyster reef restoration project on Maryland s Eastern Shore and plan a series of living shorelines trainings. Additionally, he will assist with a vacant lot restoration in Baltimore and lead an effort to expand that project s community engagement component. Justin is a recent graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park with a degree in Environmental Science and Policy where he concentrated on wildlife ecology and management. Nathaniel Simmons, Adkins Arboretum Ridgely, Caroline County Nathan is a recent graduate from Washington College where he double majored in Biology and Environmental Science. He has field experience handling and radio tracking turtles as well as some bird banding. While at Adkins Arboretum he will participate in all aspects of the organization s operation. Specifically he will assist in meadow, woodland and wetland conservation and restoration, education of over 1500 school children who will visit the Arboretum, and the cultivation of thousands of native plants in the Arboretum s nursery and demonstration gardens. -7-
8 Bradley Simpson, Audubon Naturalist Society Bethesda, Montgomery County Bradley will be engaged in ecological restoration and conservation outreach. At Woodend Nature Sanctuary, he will lead volunteers in removing invasive species and reintroducing native plants as well as help with the design and implementation of habitat surveys including a geospatial database to track progress and inform adaptive management. Also, outside of Woodend, he will engage audiences on issues of stream health through our Creek Critters app and associated events. Bradley is a recent graduate from University of Maryland, College Park with a major in Wildlife Ecology and has just completed an urban forest restoration research project in New York City. Alexa Stillwell, Chesapeake Bay Foundation Alexa will join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and help with habitat restoration through tree planting events and a living shore line workshop, leading environmental education programs, assisting Oyster Restoration Center staff as well as the native nursery at Claggett Farm and Buy Fresh, Buy Local Chesapeake Chapters which connect consumers, sustainable farms and businesses. Alexa recently graduated from University of Miami in Florida with a degree in Intercultural Communication and International Relations. Over the past couple years she has developed a passion for the environment through volunteer work and hiking the Appalachian Trail. Thomas Urban, Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks Columbia, Howard County During his year with the Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks, Thomas will participate in habitat restoration and management work, invasive plant species management, planting native species of trees, shrubs, and perennials, flora and fauna survey and monitoring, and environmental outreach and educational volunteer programming at the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area. Thomas graduated from Washington College with a degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Chesapeake Regional Studies and has since worked as a garden landscaper and stream restoration technician. Tanisha Washington, Waterfront Partnership in Baltimore During her Corps year, Tanisha will work with the Waterfront Partnership in Baltimore where she will help green targeted neighborhoods by working with community leaders to beautify tree pits and maintain rain gardens, beautify spaces through the Alley Makeover program, and play a key role in executing our oyster gardening program. She will also promote the Partnership s Mr. Trash Wheel, anti-litter campaign, and Inner Harbor Water Wheel Trash Interceptor, among other tasks. Tanisha recently graduated from Christopher Newport University in Virginia with a major in Sociology and minor in Environmental Studies. Olivia Wisner, Maryland Dept of Natural Resources, Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR) At CBNERR Olivia will help build estuarine and environmental literacy through programs with teachers, students, and communities that will connect them to the Bay and move them take action toward its protection and restoration. She will assist in educational, restoration, and stewardship activities and support science and social media communication to understand the actions needed to protect the Bay. Olivia graduated from University of Maryland Baltimore County with a degree in -8-
9 Environmental Science and minor in Political Science. She recently has interned with the Vice-Chair of the Environment and Transportation Committee of the Maryland House of Delegates, and worked as a STEM Instructor with the Howard County Library. -9-
