1 The Chesapeake Bay Trust ( is a nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to improving the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through environmental education, community outreach, and local watershed restoration. Created by the Maryland General Assembly in 1985, the Trust has awarded $50 million in grants and engaged hundreds of thousands of citizen stewards in projects that have a measurable impact on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. $ 50 million in Grants 60 West Street, Suite 405 Annapolis, MD PH: FX: In 2012, the Chesapeake Bay Trust awarded $5.8 million throughout the region through its competitive grant programs and special initiatives. These efforts included 322 grants to nonprofit organizations, civic and community groups, schools and public agencies. Additionally the Trust also managed individual programs that included its Chesapeake Conservation Corps program, Environmental Education capacity building and training, urban green jobs training, and more. In 2012, these efforts engaged 30,000 community volunteers who donated over 50,000 hours; educated 83,000 K-12 students using the outdoors as a classroom; hosted over 1,200 events and workshops that educated another 34,000 attendees; and planted 179,000 native trees and plants to restore 107 acres of forest buffer, wetlands, and other habitats while installing another four acres of innovative green infrastructure practices. The Trust is supported by sales of the Maryland Treasure the Chesapeake license plate, donations to the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Fund on the Maryland State income tax form, donations from individuals and corporations, and partnerships with private foundations and federal and state agencies. Almost 90 percent of the Trust s expenditures are directed to its Chesapeake Bay restoration and education programs and for the 10 th consecutive year, the Trust has received a Four Star Rating from Charity Navigator, placing the organization in the top 1% of charities nationwide.
