4 VACUUM CUP MATERIALS There are various reasons for choosing a particular vacuum cup material. The first choice is normally the hardness. This will determine the ability of a vacuum cup to seal against the surface of the product being handled. The most commonly used hardness measurement scale is Shore Hardness, often referred to as Durometer. In fact, a durometer is the actual instrument used to measure hardness but is often referred to as the measuring unit throughout industry. There are different hardness scales based on the materials being measured, such as plastics or rubbers or metals. The scale used to identify the hardness of vacuum cup materials is Durometer Scale A, which ranges from 100 (hard) to 5 (soft). Vacuum cups are typically available in compounds with a hardness between 35 to 70 Durometer. Another, sometimes very important characteristic of a vacuum cup material, is the temperature resistance. Most pick-and-place applications occur at room temperature, but in the plastic injection industry for example, part temperature is often considered in vacuum cup choice due to the high temperature of parts being removed from the mold tool. At the other end of the scale is the handling of cold products, such as refrigerated or frozen food packaging. Typical vacuum cup materials have a temperature range from -40ºC to 204ºC (-40ºF to +400ºF). NBR (Vacuforce code suffix N) is the most common material and is the same as Nitrile rubber and Buna-N. NBR is used in general industrial applications and is found in steel handling, plastics handling, and any other application where the cup should be resistant to oils and related chemicals. In most applications, this is the go-to material choice based on its fair cost and good wear resistance. The hardness of this compound is typically 60 durometer, although this can be as low as 40 or as high as 70. NBR is often overlooked for high temperature applications such as injection molding as the user specifies a very high temperature and therefore opts for silicone. NBR is suitable for most plastic injection parts handling as its temperature rating is often in excess of 90ºC/200ºF. SILICONE (Vacuforce code suffix S & ST) is a very popular cup compound but is more expensive than NBR. Silicone does offer the advantage of having extreme temperature resistance both cold and hot, ideal for handling frozen packaged food and hot plastic-injected molded parts with a temperature range from -40ºC (-40ºF) to 204ºC (400ºF). Silicone is softer than NBR, having a typical Durometer rating of 40, allowing it to seal against contoured or rough surfaces, such as cardboard sheet, corrugated plastic, and plastic food packaging. Vacuforce silicone is offered as standard with FDA (title 21) compliance to allow direct contact with food and drug products. Vacuforce Code S - Red Silicone, Vacuforce Code ST - White Translucent. METAL IMPREGNATED SILICONE (Vacuforce code SMI & STMI) has the same basic characteristics as the standard silicone described above, but the metal impregnated compound has been design specifically for the food industry. Iron filings inside the actual silicone compound allow metal detectors to sense that a vacuum cup has fallen into the food packaging that contains food stuffs like bread loaves, rolls, and buns or confectionery foodstuffs. Vacuforce Code SMI - Red Silicone, Code STMI - White Translucent. An important note about silicone that must be understood by the vacuum cup user. Silicone should never be used on surfaces which are to be painted, such as automotive body panels, as the paint will not bond properly on the area touched by the silicone compound cup. Also, it should not be used to handle decorative stone such as marble or quartz, or glass products as it will permanently etch the surface.

5 THREAD DATA In the pneumatics and vacuum industry there are 4 types of popular thread forms in use today. This page highlights the technical data of each which should be understood when applying vacuum cup fittings shown in this catalogue to applications found in the field. National Pipe Taper (NPT) Referred to as NPT, this American pipe thread is by far the most common thread used in American made fluid power components and is the standard thread in the USA and Canada. This tapered thread seals using a thread sealant or tape. The Pneuforce NPT male threaded fittings have a pre-applied thread sealant to allow speed of connection to female threaded ports. Thread Taper Angle Thread Angle Thread Crest & Root Flat National Pipe Straight (NPS) Often referred to as NPSF, the NPS thread has the same fundamental characteristics as NPT except that it is a straight thread. NPSF stands for National Pipe Straight Fuel and is often used in female threads for fuel line connections or in the pneumatics industry it is often found in plastic body parts where a tapered thread could split the component body as the fitting is tightened. BSPT is a tapered thread and is used in male threaded components to connect to female BSPT and also BSPP thread forms. Of course using a BSPT male to BSPT female is the preferred method which offers a full tapered seal, BSPT threads need a thread sealant to seal. However, Pneuforce BSPT male threads have a pre-applied thread sealant and do not require additional thread tape. Thread Taper Angle Thread Angle Thread Crest & Root Radius British Standard Pipe Parallel (BSPP) Often referred to as a G thread, the BSPP thread form is by far the most popular female thread for pneumatic components throughout the world except for the USA where NPT is the standard. A parallel thread, the male fittings seal with an O ring ensuring a perfect seal each time and also in multiple connections such as a manifold, ensure common fitting height. A further advantage is that the male fitting can be used repeatedly without the need for reapplying thread sealant. Male G threads cannot be connected to female BSPT thread ports. The cups include an aluminum male or female threaded fitting for machinery and vacuum source connection. This cup is available in Nitrile rubber in both 45 and 60 Durometer. 10 SBF POLYURETHANE BELLOWS TRACTION CUPS The SBF series of vacuum cups are designed to offer the vacuum user a cup that can pick up on angled surfaces and adapt to products such as formed sheet steel that may have a tight radius. The cups include an aluminum male or female threaded fitting for machinery and vacuum source connection. This cup is available as standard in POLYURETHANE which is a MARK FREE compound. It is as flexible as rubber but much harder wearing. Ideal for handling pressed steel sheet and glass products. Standard Durometer is 60 but other Durometer grades are available upon request. The single bellows design offers slight vertical movement when vacuum is applied independent of the machinery aiding sheet separation and also compliance on concave and convex surfaces. The ASM series of multi function vacuum generators offer the user a true solution in vacuum pick and place technology. Having integral control valves for both vacuum on/off and compressed air release, the ASM series are ideal for high speed packaging lines, steel stamping, pharmaceutical and any other application where turn key vacuum generation is required. These individual modules are able to be stacked together to share both a common air supply and also exhaust port. The valve is mounted directly onto the vacuum port of the vacuum cup. If that cup is damaged or does not seal against the load being lifted, the induced vacuum air flow closes the valve shut. This ensures that the vacuum level is retained in the rest of the vacuum cups installed on the same circuit. This valve is adjustable and therefore can be used on various size vacuum cups or even on porous surfaces such as cardboard or MDF paneling. The cup mounting can be facilitated using either the G1/4 female or G3/8 male thread. The brass adjustment screw, depending on the cup fitting design, can be adjusted with the vacuum cup installed. The image on the right shows the simple construction of this valve consisting of: Valve Body Spring Nitrile Sealing Ball Brass Adjustment Screw Adjustment Instructions The self closing valve works on the principle of air flow volume. The adjustment of this valve is dependent on the volume of air between the valve and the sealing surface of the cup. Therefore this distance should be minimized to ensure accuracy and repeatability. The brass set screw should be turned inwards in a CW direction to decrease the amount of flow that closes the valve and turned outwards in a CCW direction to increase the amount of flow to close the valve. An approximate guide for use a on a 40mm diameter single bellows cup is 1mm of ball movement. If the cup is larger or sealing on a porous surface, this adjustment might need to be increased. This orifice restricts leakage if the vacuum cup D is not sealed correctly against the load being gripped by the Squid system. More details of this valve can be found on page If the valve senses too much air flow when vacuum is turned on to the Squid, this valve will close isolating the attached vacuum cup from the rest of the system. Therefore, maximum system vacuum level is now available to the remaining vacuum cups that are sealed against the load being handled. The self closing valve system is the preferred choice when handling varying size loads with the same Squid particularly if the loads being handled vary greatly in surface area on the pick up face. The cup fitting D and vacuum cup E attach directly to the self closing valve. It should be noted that the self closing valves are adjustable to allow for successful handling of low quality cardboard cartons or other porous type products. 115 CP50 Modular Assembly For larger Squid assemblies the standard Squid models shown on the previous pages can be coupled together to offer full layer vacuum systems. The illustration below shows four VFSQ3060 models close coupled together to offer a layer of 576mm x 1152 which is a 1/2 pallet Squid system. The Vacuforce CP50 connection plates are shown installed on the top and bottom surfaces of the assembled Squid. Although not intended for structural integrity, these connection plates add rigidity and a positive location of multiple Squids when mounted together on a common mounting frame. Due to the unique, patent pending design of the Squid series of products, the cup pitch remains constatnt across the complete assembly. 116 Vacuum Generation Vacuum generation for The Squid can be a choice of either a vacuum pump or compressed air powered generator. Vacuum Generators The AM series of vacuum generators (refer to page 3.20) offer flow rates up to 278m³/hr (162CFM) with maximum vacuum levels in a sealed system of -90kPa (27 Hg). Regenerative Blowers The 4RB series of vacuum regeneration blowers (refer to page 4.6) offer vacuum levels up to -70kPa (21 Hg) with maximum flow rates of 200m³/hr (118CFM). Vacuum Generator System The venturi schematic on the left shows a vacuum venturi coupled with an ESK module (refer to page 3.20) which turns the venturi on and off as vacuum demand dictates. This method of controlling the venturi operation independent of machine cycles allows for significant compressed air savings. The JZF vacuum control valve (refer to page 6.3) is shown mounted directly to The Squid which will turn the vacuum on and off as per the machine control. This schematic is typical of larger installations. However on smaller Squid systems vacuum control is normally achieved by turning off and on the compressed air supply to a directly coupled vacuum generator. Each application is assessed to ensure that the most efficient method is used. Vacuum Pump System The schematic on the left shows a vacuum pump such as a 4RB series regenerative blower (refer to page 4.6). The JZF vacuum control valve (refer to page 6.3) is shown mounted directly to The Squid which will turn the vacuum on and off as per the machine control. 117 VFSC3/8 Self Closing Valve All Anodized Aluminum Body Stainless Steel Spring 1/4 Female and 3/8 Male Thread Connection Fully Adjustable Based on Application VFSC 3/8 Series Male Thread 3/8 DIMENSIONS (mm) The Vacuforce self closing valve is used on vacuum cup handling systems where multiple cups are utilizing the same vacuum source. The valve is mounted directly onto the vacuum port of the vacuum cup. If that cup is damaged or does not seal against the load being lifted, the induced vacuum air flow closes the valve shut. This ensures that the vacuum level is retained in the rest of the vacuum cups installed on the same circuit. This valve is adjustable and therefore can be used on various size vacuum cups or even on porous surfaces such as cardboard or MDF paneling. The cup mounting can be facilitated using either the G1/4 female or G3/8 male thread. The brass adjustment screw, depending on the cup fitting design, can be adjusted with the vacuum cup installed. The image below shows the simple construction of this valve consisting of: Valve Body Spring Nitrile Sealing Ball Brass Adjustment Screw Adjustment Instructions The self closing valve works on the principle of air flow volume. The adjustment of this valve is dependent on the volume of air between the valve and the sealing surface of the cup. Therefore this distance should be minimized to ensure accuracy and repeatability. The brass set screw should be turned inwards in a CW direction to decrease the amount of flow that closes the valve and turned outwards in a CCW direction to increase the amount of flow to close the valve. An approximate guide for use a on a 40mm diameter single bellows cup is 1mm of ball movement. If the cup is larger or sealing on a porous surface, this adjustment might need to be increased. The illustration on the right shows 5 rows of cups but with Row 5 overhanging the load. The inrush of air will close this row or self closing valves. Vacuforce Edition 5 Page 10.12

118 Project Examples Tire Production This special Squid system was design to be installed in an existing customer frame to enable the grip and transfer of a tire circumference in a high speed production environment. This size Squid system was designed to enable a fast and accurate pick and place using a centralized vacuum system. Carton Palletizing This ten zone Squid system was design primarily to reduce the amount of compressed air the end user was experiencing. This was achieved with a +70% saving in air consumption by using five multi stage vacuum generators which utilized an energy savings circuit, only operating when required. Fully automatic in its operation, this Squid system managed to achieve a 100% cycle rate compared to the previous 85% product throughput. Carton Palletizing Dual zone Squid system for conveyor line using a regenerative blower instead of the usual compressed air venturi which is typical for this size Squid system. Utilizing a total of 72 single bellows vacuum cups with orifice screws, this system handles over 40 different size cartons without the need for adjustment.
