DESICCANT METHOD The desiccant method The optimal way to protect your products against corrosion and to conserve them over lengthy periods is to use packaging whose atmosphere is sealed off from the

8 DESICCANT METHOD The desiccant method The optimal way to protect your products against corrosion and to conserve them over lengthy periods is to use packaging whose atmosphere is sealed off from the ambient environment by a shell comprising barrier layer fi lm. Ströbel topdry desiccant bags reduce the humidity inside fi lm shells in such a way that no corrosion can develop. Desiccants only achieve the desired results if used in conjunction with a moisture-resistant barrier layer shell such as Ströbel topdry aluminum composite film or 200μ LDPE film. As this method is based on moisture adsorption, no chemicals are released which in turn means that Ströbel topdry can be used without limitation for any material. The use of Ströbel topdry desiccant in conjunction with multi-layer fi lm provides top notch protection for export products in accordance with DIN To optimally protect your products against corrosion and/or moisture, you need to determine the exact amount of desiccant needed in each case. Desiccant unit calculation You need the following information in order to calculate desiccant units: Moisture permeability of the relevant barrier layer Dimensions and surface area (in square meters) of the fi lm being used Number of storage/shipping days Requisite components A desiccant only achieves the desired results if the air inside the packaging is enclosed by a moisture resistant fi lm shell such as Ströbel topdry aluminum composite fi lm or 200 μ LDPE fi lm that is sealed thermally or via pulse sealing. We will be more than happy to recommend a suitable fi lm sealing tool for this purpose. 9

These impregnation dots change color according to the ambient humidity, whereby the color change is from blue to pink in accordance with TL Desiccant capsules [2] [3] Our desiccant capsules are fully permeable to moisture, while the shell is made of resistant and completely impermeable material. These dust free capsules, which are labeled using nontoxic dyes, reliably keep your products dry. Thanks to their fi ne Tyvek fi bers, the bags are dust and pilling free. The bags are made of top quality silica gel. This is the only type of desiccant allowed by the U.S. Food and Drug Admnistration (FDA). Desiccant bag contents 0,25 gr 0,5 gr 1,0 gr 3,5 gr 7,0 gr 10,0 gr 14,0gr The following desiccant bag content options are available: White silica gel that does not change color when it becomes saturated with moisture Blue silica gel that changes color when it becomes saturated with moisture Orange silica gel that changes color when it becomes saturated with moisture Silica gel is also available as blue or orange gel. As the gel becomes increasingly saturated with moisture, the color of the indicating silica gel changes from blue to pink or from orange to green. 11

12 CORROSION PROTECTION AND LONG TERM CONSERVATION [1] [2] [3] INTERCEPT Technology [1] INTERCEPT Technology products, which werde developed by Lucent Technologies and Bell Laboratories (U.S.A.), integrate highly porous copper particles that neutralize corrosive gases and moisture in packaging. In this process, the neutralized gases bond continuously with the copper particles. INTERCEPT Technology enables you to protect your products against corrosion and moisture for up to 15 years using the same fi lm for the entire time, i.e. the fi lm need not be changed. INTERCEPT Technology protects not only all metals but also seals, all types of polymers, and organic materials. Moreover, INTERCEPT Technology products can be used for shipping any kind of product worldwide to any country using any shipping method. Extensive testing of our Ströbel topdry desiccant has shown that this product is compatible with INTERCEPT Technology fi lms. When used in conjunction with INTERCEPT Technology products, Ströbel topdry is the only allowable desiccant for reliable long term packaging. 12

13 [4] [5] Volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) [2] [3] VCIs provide long lasting corrosion protection for steel, iron, chrome, copper, brass and zinc. The VCI compound vaporizes from the paper or fi lm and is deposited on the target metal surfaces, including in diffi cult to reach areas. The fi lm formed by this deposit protects against corrosive media, and the VCI fi lm vaporizes after use without leaving any residue. VCIs can provide up to two years of corrosion protection. Our VCI fi lms are available on rolls, as box hoods, as lateral folding bags and as fl at bags. EVAPO-RUST [4] EVAPO-RUST removes rust without compromising the material being treated, whether it be copper, brass, aluminum, plastic, rubber, wood or vinyl; nor does EVAPO-RUST remove surface oxides such as paint or chrome. EVAPO- RUST is nontoxic, biodegradable, acid and base free, noncorrosive, and nonfl ammable. VCI dispensers [5] Foam, chips and bagged granulates can also be used to form an additional VCI fi lm so as to ensure that the VCI compound is evenly distributed inside the packaging. Scientifi c testing by the Institut für Korrosionsschutz in Dresden, Germany has shown that our Premium Metall Guard VCI packaging is nontoxic and completely safe. 13

In addition to standard sizes, we also make topshield and topdry EMI bags to your specifi ed dimensions and with your personalized logo or company name imprinted on the bags. Our ESD packaging is EN/IEC compliant. topshield shielding bags [1] [2] topshield shielding bags are ideal for shipping, handling and storage of highly sensitive ESD components, allow for controlled neutralization of electronic charges, and ward off voltage peaks. Thus our ESD packaging protects against voltage damage and static electricity in accordance with EN/IEC topdry EMI bags with moisture protection [3] The multiple layers of these metallized moisture barrier bags provide outstanding protection against moisture and static electricity. When used in conjunction with a desiccant and a humidity indicator, these bags provide reliable long term packaging in accordance with B type 1, class 1. The fi lm is also highly effective when it comes to creating a vacuum inside the packaging. 14

Dissipative materials provide excellent protection against dust by virtue of the fact that they display only a minimal charge when rubbed against or separated from other materials. Dissipitative materials should be used solely for low-sensitivity assemblies as these materials are permeable to voltage peaks. Coated products [2] The special coating applied to CORSTAT and CORTRONIC ESD storage and shipping cartons equalize electrical current and protect against electromagnetic fi elds. When used in conjunction with Ströbel topdry (see pp ) and humidity indicators, these cartons provide reliable long term packaging. Black conductive bags [1] Black-conductive bags display their volume-conductive properties thanks to the carbon that is added to the bag fi lm. This type of material should be used solely for low-sensitivity assemblies as it is permeable to voltage peaks. 15

If your products are subjected to strong vibrations while en route, the color on the Shockwatch indicator changes from white to red. g-log data logger [2] Our g-log data logger system continuously logs and stores acceleration, impacts, vibrations and temperature data, which can be precisely read out after delivery. Drop-n-Tell [3] Our Drop-n-Tell impact indicators show whether a package was dropped during the shipping process. The device is activated on one axis only. Protect-A-Pak [4] Protect-A-Pack is a disposable shock monitor that can be attached to consignments via a self adhesive backing or can be mounted on external packaging via a mounting fl ange.

Tip-n-Tell [1] Our Tip-n-Tell device indicates a package s angle of incline during the shipping process. The Tip-n-Tell indicator contains small granulate spheres that fl ow into the upper portion of a self adhesive fi eld and adhere to this fi eld if the angle of incline of the package to which the indicator is attached is changed during the shipping process. Tiltwatch [3] The Tiltwatch indicator monitors the angle of incline of packages containing position-dependent goods. The device is not overly sensitive, which means that it is unaffected by normal vibrations and thus provides you with a well priced tool for monitoring of the shipping and handling process. Tiltwatch-plus [2] This version of the TiltWatch tilt indicator registers positional changes ranging from 20 to 80 degrees, as well as 180 degree rotation (i.e. the package being turned upside down). 17

Our louver plates promote homogeneous air circulation and prevent moisture from accumulating on the products being shipped.
