2 THEORY & CHARACTERISTICS AGM Humidity Indicator Plugs are designed for mounting on reusable or long-term storage containers, in flexible barrier material, in moisture-sensitive electronic or optical equipment, or in any other humidity controlled enclosure. They readily detect changes in the relative humidity of the space being monitored by one of two means: 1. Reversible Color Change Humidity indicators have a color change element, which turns from blue to lavender to pink as the humidity increases, and turns back to blue when the humidity decreases. This characteristic enables these elements to be reused, as long as they have not been exposed to humidities in excess of 90% for periods of 36 hours or longer, which tends to wash out the element. The element has long-term calibration and accuracy to within ±5%, when read at 75 o F (22 o C). At other temperatures a small correction factor of 2½% for each 10 o F (5.5 o C) higher or lower than 75 o must be taken into consideration. For example, at high temperatures the element will indicate a lower humidity than is actually the case, and conversely, a higher humidity will be indicated at low temperatures. As indicated above, these elements are water soluble and should not be placed in direct contact with water or steam or exposed to extremely high humidities for protracted periods of time. Also, ammonia fumes will set the elements causing them to lose color reversibility. The elements are available in ten percent increments from 10%RH to 90% RH, as well as various combinations of these humidities. 2. Maximum Humidity Indicator A color-stain element which warns that certain humidity levels have been exceeded, indicating that the desiccant may need to be recharged or replaced. The element warns of dangerous humidity levels by staining a white indicator disc a brilliant orange, which may turn dark brown when it has been exposed to excessive humidity for a minimum time period. These elements are irreversible; therefore, they should only be installed in a desiccated atmosphere. Unaffected by temperature, they give an unmistakable indication of the need for desiccant replacement, regardless of when they are checked. Both types of elements may be installed in the same plug-type housing, which is leak-proof and will withstand shock and vibration. The plugs are quickly installed with common hand tools, and are suitable for almost all applications for Method II packaging of MIL-P-116. RFI/ EMI shielding or CARC finish can be supplied as optional features. While it has been a fairly common practice to install the plugs complete with the color-change indicating elements in containers at the time the containers are fabricated, this procedure can expose the elements to excessive humidities which may affect their characteristics (see above). This is even more true in the case of the Maximum Humidity Indicator elements, which are irreversible. It will be necessary to install the housings without the elements in the containers when they are manufactured or refurbished and install the elements in the housings at the time the container is loaded and desiccated. For this reason, you will find these elements and their housings only listed separately, while the color-change elements are offered both separately and complete with housings. The housings without elements may also be used as observation windows, and are described on Page 10. should not be removed from their shipping containers until ready for installation. Recommended torque for installation of all indicators is 30 in.-lbs. (metric: 3.4 N m). RELATED PRODUCTS Humidity indicators are often incorporated into plug-type desiccators for small enclosures. 7 INDICATING DESICCATORS TA362/TA363 TA366/TA471 Humidity indicator and desiccator combined into a single unit, designed primarily for use in small containers or sealed instruments. TA362 and TA363 incorporate two separate humidity indicator elements. One element monitors the relative humidity (RH) of the container atmosphere; the other monitors the condition of the desiccant itself. Desiccators are refillable by removing the end cap. Assemblies can be supplied with a variety of desiccants, humidity indicators and elements. The TA362 is the shorter of the two shown. The TA366 combines a porous plastic tube desiccator with either a TA356 or TA348 humidity indicator. The larger TA471 incorporates either a TA346 or TA396 indicator. The increased surface area provided by the porous plastic tube increases moisture adsorption rates. Various tube lengths can be provided to meet your particular adsorption or space requirements. Each inch of TA366 tube contains approximately 1/4 unit of desiccant while each inch of TA471 tube contains approximately 1/2 unit of desiccant. Condition of desiccant is monitored by the humidity indicator element. Assemblies can be supplied with a variety of desiccants and humidity indicator elements. It utilizes all the features of the TA356, but by reversing its viewing face it is easier to install. It provides the same tight seal through a 1.05 in. (27 mm) dia. hole. Lock nut and two gaskets are furnished. PROPELLANT LEAK INDICATOR Indicator especially designed to warn of propellant leaks. One half circle on disc turns gray upon contact with mixed amine fuel (hydrazine) fumes. Other half turns bright yellow upon contact with nitric acid fumes. ENGINE CYLINDER PLUG Especially designed for installation in engine cylinders. It is installed in a 0.71" (18 mm) threaded boss. The o-ring provides an airtight seal with minimal torque. LOW HUMIDITY INDICATORS Elements change color from green to yellow when humidity exceeds 8-11% RH. Can be supplied in a variety of configurations. (14 grams) GIVES POSITIVE IRREVERSIBLE INDICATION OF EXCESSIVE HUMIDITY The TA378-HC-MHI marks a significant breakthrough in the monitoring of humidity inside long-term storage containers for sophisticated military/electronic and corrosion-susceptible equipment. The element warns of dangerous humidity levels by staining a white disc a brilliant orange (turning later to a dark brown) when it has been exposed to humidity ranging from 55% RH for an eight hour continuous period to 85% RH for two hours. Humidity levels below 55% will not cause the indicator to stain, regardless of duration. Unaffected by temperature, it gives an unmistakable indication of the need for desiccant replacement, regardless of when it is checked. The element is designed to be installed in the TA456 housing (page 10) at the time the container is desiccated. It can also be used to replace color-change elements in TA356, TA350, or any SAE AS26860 type humidity indicator plug. Installation is accomplished with a 0.50" (13 mm) hex key wrench. Each element is individually packaged in a MIL-B transparent barrier bag with desiccant. Quantities are overpacked in sealed metal containers. 8

9 TA384-HC-MHI LARGER SIZE DELAYED RESPONSE MAXIMUM HUMIDITY INDICATOR ELEMENT Same features as TA378-HC-MHI, but slightly larger. Installs in TA446 housing (page 10) at the time the container is desiccated. It can also be used to replace color-change elements in TA346, TA396, or other MS or -2 type humidity indicator plugs. Installation is accomplished with a 0.875" (22 mm) hex key wrench or with a x.050" (30 x 1 mm) flat steel blade. Each element is individually packaged in a MIL-B transparent barrier bag with desiccant. Quantities are overpacked in sealed metal containers. Weight.03 lbs. (14 grams) TA284 This plug was created for high pressure applications. The glass window is fused directly to the steel body and the ¾-14 pipe thread is tapered for leak tight installations without o-rings or gaskets. This plug is easily installed in a threaded boss with a 1-1/8" socket wrench. The indicator card in this plug is protected from contamination by a porous filter and a polyethylene spacer. The humidity indicator card, filter and spacer are held in place by a retaining ring. Lock nuts and gaskets are not supplied with this plug. It is designed for a threaded boss only. 9

11 HUMIDITY INDICATOR CARDS These cards are color-change indicators and reversible as required by Military Specification MIL-I They also meet MIL-P-116 Method II requirements. As the humidity increases, the chemically impregnated spots change from a blue color (DRY), to a lavender, to a pink color (HUMID). As the humidity decreases, the spots change from a pink color (HUMID), to a lavender, back to a blue color (DRY). Each of these cards is accurate to ±5% RH at 75 o F. Other humidity combinations are available by special order. NOTE: These cards have been impregnated with a chemical that may cause corrosion of some metals; therefore, we recommend that the card not be placed in direct contact with metal objects. The chemical is no more harmful than table salt to humans. SHOWN ACTUAL SIZE MS MS AEC The current Military Standard, MS20003, dated 4 Jun 63, is approved by all Governmental Agencies, the Department of Defense and NATO for use in Method II packaging. The MS card meets this standard and is fully reversible. NSN # This card is used where space may be a problem. It is identical in design to the MS , except it is approximately ½ its size, making the MS ideal for small package applications. 12 MAXIMUM HUMIDITY INDICATORS 50-90% MAXIMUM HUMIDITY INDICATOR CARDS The TA Maximum Humidity Indicator Card was designed for applications which require monitoring the maximum humidity attained when exposed for a period of 24 hours or more. Each level of humidity indicated on these cards is represented by an orange crystal which dissolves when the RH level exceeds the humidity shown below it. When the crystals dissolve, they create a large yellow spot above the indicated humidity. TA Example: If the highest humidity level reached is 70% RH, then all circles up to and including 70% will have dissolved crystals and the area surrounding each circle will be stained yellow. 2½" x 4" MXC56789 This is an inexpensive, simple way to determine if storage or shipping containers have been exposed to high humidities during their shelf life. The maximum humidity indicator card should not be removed from its waterproof bag until the container in which it is to be placed is ready to be sealed. The unused cards should be returned to their original desiccated shipping container. NOTE: The maximum humidity segments of these cards are NON-reversible. Once the crystals have dissolved, the card cannot be reactivated. The MXC56789 combines all of the features of the TA with a color change humidity indicator. 4" x 4" TA The TA combines high and low temperature indicators (shown here on the reverse side) with the TA maximum humidity indicator card. 13 HUMIDITY INDICATOR CARDS FOR THE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY 1 9 /16" x 4¾" 2" x 3" SMD-HUMITECTOR (HM-04) This humidity indicator card was developed specifically for use in the electronics industry. It is ideal for use with the other components of the "Dry Pack" concept of packaging of surface mounted devices. Dry Pack is a three component process: 1. A barrier bag which seals moisture out. 2. A desiccant bag inside the barrier bag to adsorb moisture. 3. A humidity indicator card which indicates 10, 20, 30 and 40% RH. AEC826004NE This color change humidity indicator card was designed for use with activated desiccant in packaging by the Atomic Energy Commission. This card complies with MIL-I A warning arrow points to 30% RH, which if pink indicates a desiccant failure. Also available with an eyelet at the top of the card, Part Number AEC MS MS S 3¼" x 3¼" These color-change humidity indicator cards were designed for use in desiccant containers in order to insure the desiccant is in an activated condition, and comply with MIL-I They are fully reversible. A pink spot indicates a desiccant failure. A blue color reference bar is printed at the bottom of the card as a guide. When a container of desiccant is opened, the spot will match the bar if the desiccant is active. NOTE: Humidity range is not indicated on these cards. 1½" x 2" 13
