1 Emmanuel United Church Holiday Bazaar Saturday November 5 th 2016 Information Guide for Donors and Volunteers The Emmanuel Bazaar Committee is looking forward to another great bazaar for 2016! This guide has been prepared to help Donors and Volunteers in the all-important work of sorting and displaying items for the bazaar. Donors may drop off donations to the bazaar on Monday October 31 st to Friday November 4 th during office hours of 9 to 4 (9 to 1 on Friday). Baking may be dropped off on Thursday or Friday. It is extremely helpful if you can unpack and display all the goods that you are donating in the appropriate section of the bazaar. There will be lots of signs to guide you. This raises sales, and greatly speeds up the post-bazaar packup. After the bazaar, we need many volunteers to pack and deliver unsold items to other organizations. If you can pack, load or deliver unsold items to their new homes on November 6 th, please contact the office. It is not necessary to have a vehicle or to be able to lift boxes; any and all help is welcome! The success of the bazaar depends on ADVERTISING. The more posters, the more buyers, the more sales. Please pin up or distribute as many flyers as you can. They are be a stack of flyers available in the narthex if you can take a stack of them to distribute. The best time to post the ads is two to three weeks before the sale, at the end of October and the beginning of November. Suggestions of places to post ads:

3 Donations requested for 2016 The following items are NOT being accepted at this year s bazaar. Please see below for alternatives. Sharp, flammable, corrosive or toxic items Broken, incomplete or dirty items Items too large to fit in an average cardboard box (including picture frames and wall hangings) Textbooks, reference books, encyclopedias, travel guides, cookbooks or magazines Vinyl records or homemade cassettes Teflon (non-stick) cookware Electronic items Appliances Typewriters Non-working Christmas lights Plastic items of any kind Incomplete picture frames (with the glass missing) Opened hygiene products Special Needs Equipment Plants

4 The following items ARE being accepted at this year s bazaar. All items must be clean, complete, and in perfect working order. We would appreciate the donation of appropriate batteries with any battery-operated goods. 5 Alternative places to take items we are not accepting: Hazardous Waste Anything that is corrosive, flammable (aerosol), poisonous, or sharp is defined as hazardous waste. Please take advantage of the City of Ottawa s Hazardous Waste Depots to safely depose of any of this type of waste. 6 Electronic Waste Non-working electronic equipment is considered electronic waste. CD- ROM drives Desktop computers hdisk drives Fax machines Keyboards Laptop computers Mice Monitors Printers (desktop) Televisions Terminals These items usually contain hazardous heavy metals that should not go into our landfills. Recently the Salvation Army has agreed to become a drop-off point for e-waste. They pass the waste on to the Ontario Electronic Stewardship, a non-profit industry organization that will manage responsible disposal of electronic equipment. All Salvation Army stores are opened Monday to Friday 9:30 to 9, and Saturday 9:30 to 6. Please do not drop outside of these hours. Phone Special Needs Equipment Back Yard Compost Any item that is 100 % cotton and is too worn to be used anymore can be composted in a backyard composter. Remove any buttons, snaps or zippers, cut it into thin strips and mix it into the compost in the spring. This works for clothing, sheets, towels, floor mats, etc. The more worn out and dirty it is, the faster it will turn into soil!

8 Value Village accepts just about everything else. Value Village accepts the widest range of donations of any second-hand store in Ottawa. The only things they refuse are hazardous waste and large appliances. Value Village makes a financial donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association every time it receives donations of goods. 9 Donating to a Non-Profit Organization A number of non-profit organizations in our vicinity accept good quality secondhand items as donations. All the non-profits listed below have very little storage space. Please ensure that any donations that you make to them conform to what they have asked for. All donations must be clean, complete and in perfect working order. If you donate items that the non-profit cannot use, you raise their disposal costs. Please call in advance to confirm their drop-off hours and to make sure that they will be able to use the donations that you are offering.
