Don t let your good recycling go to waste What is contamination? Putting the right stuff in the right bin is important. When the wrong materials are put into your recycling bin such as nappies, food, batteries and any black coloured plastics or sacks, this is called contamination. When contamination is found amongst clean recycling it can potentially result in the whole bin lorry load being sent to landfill, which spoils the efforts you have made to recycle. The most common contaminants are disposable nappies, food, textiles, garden waste and black coloured plastics including black sacks, these are not accepted in your brown bin. Top tips to prevent contamination in your recycling bin 1. Remove all scraps of food. 2. Rinse all containers. 3. Check before to see if the item is suitable for recycling If in doubt, place in your black bin. What happens if my recycling bin is contaminated The crew will leave the contaminated recycling and will report it to our customer services team so they know. Our crews will leave you information explaining why your bin has not been emptied. You will need to remove the contamination in order for the bin to be collected on your next scheduled collection. Recycling right really does make a difference
Bulky Item Collections Bulky waste consists of unwanted domestic household items that will not fit into your wheelie bin or sack, such as washing machines, mattresses, furniture, beds, carpets, fridges and freezers etc. The council provide a chargeable bulky waste collection service for these type of household items. You can book a bulky item collection online, quickly and easily. At the start of the booking process you can check your bulky collection day. Your waste should be left outside your home by 7:30 am, making sure it s easy for us to access and is not blocking the public highway. Before booking your collection, please make sure we can collect your bulky waste items. If the items are in good condition, why not consider donating them to The Melton Furniture Project Alternatively bulky items can be taken to the local tip for opening times. Yes that s right you can recycle old textiles, bobbly jumpers, out of shape tops, duvet covers that have seen better days, toasters that have lost their spark and drill s that have bit the dust, all ideal items to send off for recycling. What is a small electrical? All electrical items that are small enough to fit into a standard sized carrier bag can be recycled, whether they plug in, charge up or are battery operated. What kind of textiles will be collected for recycling? YES PLEASE All kinds of clothing, curtains, bed sheets, blankets and towels NO THANKS Duvets, pillows, cushions, shoes, rugs and carpets How to recycle electrical items and textiles? NOT in your brown bin please. Place any items in a standard size carrier bag, no larger than 35cm by 40cm in size, (leave plugs or cables attached) even if the items are broken, they can still be recycled. Do not mix electrical items and textiles place them in separate bags. Place at the side of your brown bin by 7:30 am on your normal recycling collection day. If you do not have a wheelie bin, please place items in a plastic bag next to your brown sacks. Is there a limit to how many bags I can put out for collection? Yes, please limit the number of bags you put out per collection to 3 bags in total.
Recycling What kind of electrical items will be collected for recycling? 8 Green Waste Make life easier by getting all your garden waste collected from your home. The Green Waste Club is a subscription-based club which provides residents with a garden waste collection service. Whether you re an occasional or committed gardener, signing up for the scheme is simple and you can sign-up for as many green bins as you like. Club members are allocated their own dedicated green bin that is collected fortnightly. The garden waste is delivered to processors for conversion into compost for domestic and agricultural use. Composting Home composting is a great way to reduce waste and give your garden a treat at the same time. You can find out more about composting, including special offers on compost bins. Can I take my garden waste to the tip? Yes, there is also the option to dispose of your garden waste at the local tip. YES PLEASE Grass cuttings Flowers and plants Weeds Small prunings Hedge clippings Leaves and bark NO THANKS Large branches Soil Slabs or other rubble Plastics Kitchen food waste Animal waste or bedding Telephone Artificial flowers
Fly Tipping Fly-tipping, or illegal dumping of waste, is an unsightly blight on local communities that causes harm to the environment and can be costly to clear away. To investigate we need as much information as possible. Any help you can give is very important. Please remember: Do not touch fly tipped waste it may contain dangerous items, such as syringes, broken glass or asbestos. There may also be evidence that could help identify the culprits. Do visually inspect the waste let us know where it is, what has been fly tipped and how much. Do report it to us. Did you know? If waste taken from your home is found fly-tipped and is traced back to you or your home, you could be taken to court. You could be fined and you may get a criminal record. Make sure anyone who takes your waste is properly licensed. Householders have a Duty of Care to check that someone they pay to remove waste from their property is a licensed waste carrier, as specified in the Waste Duty of Care Regulations This applies to everyone involved in handling the waste from the person who produces it to the person who finally disposes of it. You can easily check if someone has a waste carriers licence online at environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/ view/search-waste-carriers-brokers When they come to collect your waste, ask them to provide you with a copy of the waste transfer note or a receipt, detailing the work they are carrying out for you. You can also dispose of your waste yourself by: Using your council s bulky waste collection service. Taking waste and recycling to the tip. If the item is in good condition why not donate it to Melton Furniture Project. Illegal methods of waste disposal: Some people aren t aware that the following actions are NOT acceptable ways to dispose of waste. These actions are anti-social, damaging to our environment and against the law: Leaving recycling next to a charity recycling bank. Leaving waste on pavements without an arranged collection (including outside your house). Dumping waste anywhere, such as in a field, an alleyway, a street corner or a lay by. Leaving waste or recycling outside a closed tip.
Bank Holiday Collections, Christmas and New Year There are no recycling or waste collections on Bank Holiday Mondays. All collections move on a day: Mondays collection to Tuesday, Tuesdays collection to Wednesday and so on with Fridays being collected on Saturday. Christmas and New Year collections will be different each year, please check our website for details of the Christmas service. 'Tis the season to be aware of recycling Christmas cards A staggering 300,000 tonnes of Christmas card is used in UK households during the festive season. Most cards are paper based and can be recycled, along with the envelope. Any extras such as ribbons, glitter or bows cannot be recycled and need to be removed beforehand. Electrical goods If you receive new electrical items for Christmas you may be wondering what to do with your unwanted old ones. Place them at the side of your brown bin in a standard size carrier bag, we will collect them and send them on to be recycled. Wrapping Paper Some wrapping paper is not suitable for recycling due to the amount of glitter and sticky tape; only non foil paper will be accepted. Do the scrunch test! Scrunch up the paper and if it doesn t spring back it's the non-foil type and can be recycled. Don t forget about the box As online shopping increases, so do the number of boxes being delivered. Most cardboard boxes are high-value recyclables, but the sheer volume of them means they often overflow the recycling bins. If this happens, place any cardboard at the side of your brown bin on recycling collection day and our crews will take it away. Baubles & Tinsel Baubles cannot be recycled, broken baubles should be placed in your black bin and if your tinsel has finally lost its sparkle, again it s the black bin. Love your clothes The UK has some of the best dressed landfill sites over 140 million worth of used clothes goes there every year. The Council will now collect any textiles place them in a standard size carrier bag (no black sacks please) and put them out for collection at the side of your brown bin.
FAQs Residents often ask us for more information about our waste and recycling services so we've published answers to some of the most frequently asked questions below, to help you. Why haven t you collected my refuse or recycling? We will not empty your bin if: It is overfilled. Incorrect materials have been placed in either bin. It was placed out for collection on a non-scheduled day. It was not placed out for collection by 7:30 am. If we ve missed your bin we aim to revisit your property within one working day. Missed collections should be reported within 24 hours after being missed, or you may have to wait until your next scheduled collection. We will only collect refuse in the black wheeled bin, any side or excess waste will not be collected. Can dog waste be placed in a litter bin? Yes, although there are designated bins for dog fouling in the Borough, litter bins are multi purpose and can also be used for this purpose. What if my brown bin is full? Additional recycling should be visible and placed in a carrier bag or a cardboard box (no black sacks) and put out for collection at the side of your brown bin on collection day. Can I have more than one bin? Yes. You can request and pay for additional bins, in advance, by calling customer services on: or at: I struggle to put my bins out. How do I get help with this? You can apply for an assisted collection. Assisted collections are for households where there is no one at the property who is physically able to move their rubbish and recycling bins to their collection point. Why is the recycling mixed together? Is it all just going to landfill? No - recycling is a valuable commodity and is expensive to throw away. All of the mixed recycling is taken to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Leicester, where it is both mechanically and physically separated. Sorted recycling will then be reprocessed and used to make new materials. See more at:
