3 RECYCLING COLLECTION SERVICE Your recycling wheelie bin is for plastics, cans, paper and cardboard. Your collection day is listed on the sticker on your wheelie bin or look it up at nelson.govt.nz. All recycling (mixed and glass) is collected on the same day every two weeks. GLASS GLASS Your blue crate is only for glass. Recycling needs to be out at the kerb by 7am. 4 WHEELIE BIN COLLECTION Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. Each bin s address is written on the sticker. ABC123 Every bin has a unique number. 007 Bond Street Do not remove from this address Week 1 Tuesday All your recycling (glass in the blue crate and mixed in the wheelie bin) will be collected every two weeks. Your collection day may change due to public holidays. If your collection day is going to change, this will be shown on the recycling calendar and Council s website, nelson.govt.nz. This shows whether you are assigned to Week 1 or Week 2 for recycling collections. This is the day of the week for your recycling collections. The recycling calendar delivered each year shows the weekly schedules. You can also see this on line at nelson.govt.nz TIP: the day on your sticker is the day for all your recycling collections. 4

5 HERE S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Bin Placement Please put all your recycling (glass crate and wheelie bin) out by 7am As long as you ve put your collections out by 7am, you ll never be missed out. Place bins at least half a metre away from other objects and close to the kerb. Make sure the lids are closed and the front of the bin faces the road (wheels are at the back). 7 SOFT PLASTICS AND HOW TO RECYCLE THEM WHAT IS SOFT PLASTIC? Any plastic, even if numbered, that is soft, lightweight and can be scrunched easily. This includes bags of any description, including bread bags and carrier bags, food wrappers, biscuit trays etc. WHERE SHOULD IT GO? There is a national recycling scheme for soft plastics with drop off bins at a range of supermarkets. In the Nelson area these include Countdown and New World supermarkets. WHERE SHOULDN T IT GO? Soft plastics definitely shouldn t go into your recycling bin they re too lightweight and scrunchy to be included in everyday recycling. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SOFT PLASTIC WHEN IT S COLLECTED? Recycled soft plastic is made into things like park benches and fitness circuits for playgrounds. WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION ABOUT RECYCLING? 8 WHAT GOES IN YOUR BLUE CRATE? Glass Only recycle empty, unbroken glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, blue and green). Most residents will already have a blue recycling crate that they can use for glass. If you don t have one, they are available for purchase from the Council office or from the Nelmac office in Bullen Street, Tahunanui. EMPTY CLEAN UNBROKEN CLEAR BROWN BLUE GREEN GLASS 8

9 WHAT GOES IN YOUR BAGS OR REFUSE WHEELIE BIN? Landfill If it can t be recycled, reused or composted it needs to go out as rubbish. If you want to reduce what goes to landfill, you can recycle more, and compost your food and garden waste at home. See the Council website for good ideas, nelson.govt.nz. Council offers a $20 discount voucher on compost bins that can be used at participating retailers (search composting at nelson.govt.nz). If using bags, remember to wrap sharp objects like broken glass. No flammable or dangerous materials please. 9

11 WHY DO WE HAVE TO KEEP GLASS SEPARATE AND NOT JUST PUT IT IN THE WHEELIE BIN? Glass is processed separately from the rest of the recycling we collect so it s important that it is collected separately in your blue crate. WHEELIE BINS DON T NEED TO BE COLLECTED AS OFTEN Please bear in mind that you may only want to put your bin out when it is full. It might take smaller households four to six weeks to fill their bin so that saves having to put it out every two weeks. WHO OWNS THE RECYCLING BIN? The property does. The recycling bin is allocated by Council to an individual property (rateable unit) so must stay with that property. IF I SELL MY HOUSE CAN I TAKE MY RECYCLING BIN WITH ME? No, the recycling bin is allocated to the property and must stay with the property for the new owners or tenants to use. If you re moving to another house in Nelson, a recycling bin and crate should be waiting for you there. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY WHEELIE BIN IS DAMAGED OR STOLEN? Please contact Council on to report a stolen or damaged wheelie bin. Council staff will advise you on the process for obtaining a replacement. 11
