is a variable speed suction system, that automatically adapts to the clinic s requirements; lift a suction tip and the unit responds by increasing its speed, hang up the tip and the Turbo Smart slows down. Just as your car needs more power to climb a hill, and the ability to slow down around bends, your suction system shouldn t be locked into the one speed. For a full demonstration of how Turbo Smart works, go to: Twenty minutes exploring this site will have you well informed on Turbo Smart, how it works, it s features and benefits, and just about everything there is to know about the system. Upgrade-AtoB Two Turbo Smart models are available: -Turbo Smart A with a maximum speed of 4800 rpm (for 2 surgeries running simultaneously) -Turbo Smart B with a maximum speed of 6200 rpm (for 3-4 surgeries running simultaneously) Both machines are identical units, with different maximum speeds (the Turbo Smart A s maximum speed is set down, whereas the Turbo Smart B goes to the full speed of 6200 rpm). As your number of surgeries expands, you can upgrade your Turbo Smart A to a Turbo Smart B, simply by purchasing and entering a password, unique to every machine. INTELLIGENT SUCTION
Variable speed suction Variable speed suction offers considerable advantages over traditional suction systems rpm 4800 rpm 6200 rpm 1 X HVE tip 2 X HVE tip 2-3 X HVE tips How does it work? The suction motor changes speed according to the vacuum level in the system. The unit constantly reads the vacuum level; when vacuum level goes down (signalling that another operator has started using suction) the suction motor increases speed to increase it s airflow performance. When vacuum goes up (signalling someone hanging up a suction tube) the suction motor slows down. Above is an example of how the Turbo Smart changes speed according to the number of users. With 1 HVE running the suction motor speed is approximately 3200 rpm, when a second surgery picks up a HVE tip the Smart goes up to around 4800 rpm (the maximum speed of Turbo Smart A). With 4 surgeries running the Turbo Smart B goes to around 6200 rpm (the maximum speed of the Turbo Smart B). These speeds will vary depending on the size of pipes and tubes in the clinic. The speeds are constantly changing depending on the pressure in the system (that is, it is not a locked in speed, i.e. with one surgery it does this speed, with two surgeries it does another speed - it constantly changes according to the pressure in the line). This also means that the Turbo Smart is able to slow down under situations such as too much fluids arriving at the pump (caused by badly designed plumbing or lots of fluid entering through the spittoon etc.). Advantages: Generates less heat A suction motor generates the most heat when there is only a small volume of air being aspirated through it (imagine a 4 surgery motor with only one small tip being used). This is because there is more pressure (pressure means heat), less air going through the motor to cool it, and more electrical current going into the motor. Instead of working hard at a high speed when there is little demand on the suction, Turbo Smart slows down its speed. When other users start using the suction it speeds up, it's that simple. No high start current If you were to start a suction motor with an amp-meter connected to it, you'll see the dial jump off the scale. This is referred to as 'start current', which as a rule of thumb is about 4 times higher than the motor's rated current. Start current is one of the things that makes your lights dim when the electrical supply is being overloaded. Start current is also when the electrical circuit is getting it's heaviest load. However the variable speed drive in Turbo Smart has no high start current, as it simply ramps up the speed of the system. It still starts quickly, but without the inrush of current (you can start it with an amp-meter and watch is slowly ramp up). 3-phase motors, no capacitors on the motors Though the supply is only 240 Volt, 10amp single phase, both motors on the Turbo Smart are 3-phase (Turbo Smart converts the single phase input to 3 phase). This means a huge advantage of not having a capacitor on the motors. A capacitor stores a charge of energy required to start a motor, and are fitted to pretty much all dental suction pumps (unless they're 3 phase, which is not common). The problem is, they can often deteriorate and stop working, which causes the suction motor to stop as well. Turbo Smart has no capacitors on the motors as the motors are 3-phase - this simple fact greatly increases reliability of the suction system. Upgrade from a Turbo SmartAto Turbo Smart B This is a great advantage if your client has 2 surgeries but may upgrade to 3 or 4 in the future - they can buy a Turbo Smart A today and then buy a password to upgrade to a Turbo Smart B as their surgery grows. Tandem systems Because the suction motor varies it speed according to demand, you can connect two or more Turbo Smarts to the same suction line and have them work in parallel - without any extra control gear or plumbing (simply connect the two systems with a Y- junction). See page 20 for more details on Tandem Turbo Smarts. 17

NB: a 50mm in-line muffler is supplied which should be fitted between the connection on the unit and the pipe exhaust connection. 12. 4 Operation Sequence of functioning When an operator in the surgery lifts the suction, a signal is sent for the Turbo Smart to activate (if not already activated). The centrifuge starts (momentarily before the suction motor in order to clear any remaining fluids in the separator), followed by the suction motor. The system runs, varying its speed according to demand from the surgeries. Air and fluids are aspirated from the surgeries into the Turbo Smart. The centrifuge separates the air from fluids, forcing fluids out to drain, while air is aspirated through to the suction motor. When the signal is given for the machine to stop (i.e. all operators in the surgeries hang up their suction terminals) the system waits for a period (which can be set in the Turbo Smart s program through the display) and then the suction motor stops. The centrifuge runs on after this to clear any fluids still arriving from the surgeries (particularly useful if the machine is installed at a level lower than the surgeries). The centrifuge 1. Drain fluids outlet 8. Vacuum sensor (connected to control panel) 9. Connection to suction motor 10.Recirculation valve Recirculation valve The recirculation valve (10) is an important feature of the Turbo Smart, and vital to its operation (particularly if the ISO-18 hydrocyclone is fitted to the machine). The valve protects the system from fluids being aspirated into the suction motor. This can normally happen when the volume of fluids arriving from the surgeries is too high (this can happen due to long use of the spittoon without tips open, or from a badly designed pipeline) The recirculation valve counters this problem, by restricting the volume of fluids being drawn into the machine when there is a high volume of fluids in the system. In effect, when there is high fluid pressure in the centrifuge, the valve opens momentarily, connecting the fluid drain with the inlet of the centrifuge. The fluids arriving from the surgery are momentarily hit head-on with fluids under pressure (fluids that are in normal operation pumped out to drain), slowing down fluids arriving from the surgeries, and giving the system time to process the fluids. NB: The recirculation valve opens only momentarily, and the surgeries should only notice a minimal fluctuation in performance, if any. Emergency drain valve (4) - this is simply a rubber flap valve on the outside of the centrifuge that is normally held closed by suction. If for any reason fluids are still entering the system when the suction is not running (i.e. unit stops due to a problem, loss of power etc.), the valve opens and allows fluids to run out onto the drip tray.
Turbo Smart s control panel is the heart of the machine. It is constantly receiving information on the system, and adapts the machine s operation to suit. Control panel The Turbo Smart control panel constantly monitors the status of the machine so that it can adapt it s performance and operation as best possible. For example, the control recognises a drop in vacuum level as another surgery starts using the suction, and responds by increasing the motor speed. When a surgery hangs up the suction, the control reads an increase in vacuum level and slows the machine down. The control panel reads the vacuum level by a small sensor tube connected to the centrifuge (right). The control panel also monitors things like the ambient temperature; if the temperature gets too hot, the control panel reduces power output to the suction motor by approximately 30% (thus lowering the heat output of the Turbo Smart). If the temperature reaches a point which is dangerous to the machine, it will deactivate the unit to protect it (it can be reset by pressing Esc ). Turbo Smart display sensor tube Through the unit s display you can access the following information: Unit temperature Unit maximum temperature Fault log Vacuum level Electrical consumption The technician (after entering an access code), can change the following: Maximum suction pressure Run-on times (of suction and centrifuge) Entry of PASSWORD to upgrade A to B Please consult the Turbo Smart instruction manual for further information on navigating the Turbo Smart display. Ventilation of the control panel Turbo Smart uses a variable speed drive to control the speed of the suction motor. The variable speed drive must be cooled for it to function. To keep the variable speed drive and control panel cool, it is fitted with a ventilation fan and vent. Air is drawn into the control panel by a ventilation fan fitted to the bottom of the panel (a). Air is aspirated into the panel through the vents at the top of (b). Air is directed through a heat sink (designed to maximise heat dissipation) and is then blown out at the bottom of the control panel. NB: due to air being drawn through the control panel, the Turbo Smart should be protected against humidity and dust. Optimally, the Turbo Smart should be installed inside the clinic - IF HOWEVER doing so is not practical, the Turbo Smart can be ordered with a SEALED CONTROL PANEL (optional extra) - see following page and page 33 for details. b a 20
The Turbo Smart control panel has air drawn through it to cool the components (much like a computer does) and therefor needs to be protected from humidity and dirty air. In many cases this will mean the Turbo Smart should be installed inside the clinic. SEALED CONTROL PANEL Where it is not practical to install the entire Turbo Smart inside the clinic, the unit can be supplied with a SEALED CONTROL PANEL (optional extra) or the unit can be installed in a split format. STANDARD INSTALLATION Unit installed inside the clinic: The complete Turbo Smart is installed inside the clinic, either in a ventilated room or an enclosure (i.e. cupboard with fan forced ventilation and vent to keep the unit cool - as is seen in the diagram right). This format of installation should be used whenever there is an appropriate location inside the clinic. If there are concerns about the noise level, or if it is not possible to properly ventilate the machine, then a plant area outside of the clinic should be considered, using either a SEALED CONTROL panel or split kit. Above: Installation with plant-room inside clinic WITH SEALED CONTROL PANEL Unit installed in outside plant-area: The complete Turbo Smart (fitted with an optional SEALED CONTROL PANEL - see page 33 for price and details), is installed in a weatherproof plant-area (NB: ventilation of the plant-area is still required). INFORMATION ON THE SEALED CONTROL PANEL The sealed control panel is an additional option on all Turbo Smarts (Turbo Smart Aand B, with and without ISO-18 amalgam retention). The sealed control panel effectively splits the control panel into two compartments; a sealed compartment, which houses all of the unit s sensitive electronics, and another compartment that is ventilated and houses the components that require cooling. Above: Installation with plant-room outside the clinic (i.e. weatherproof with vents to outside air) SEALED CONTROL PANEL The sealed control panel (optional extra available on all Turbo Smart models) is designed for installations where the ambient air is not clean and dry (i.e. when it is installed in a plant-area that is ventilated with air from outside of the clinic). Please refer to page 33 for pricing. Sealed control panel - ventilated compartment contains heat sink and capacitors. Sealed control panel - sealed section contains the two circuit boards, the power filter and circuit breakers. 21
As with any suction system, it is vital that the pipeline be designed properly, and that the Turbo Smart be connected in a way that will facilitate good operation. Pipeline design These pages are a guide to installing Turbo Smart - please refer to the manual for detailed instructions. suction line to the surgeries 500mm max** minimum 1 degree slope in pipe towards final rise into machine* *The suction line should have a fall of 1 degree or more from the surgeries back to the suction pump (or as is usually the case, to the final vertical rise through the floor up to the Turbo Smart, as is shown above). This slope in the suction line keeps fluids moving along the pipe towards the suction unit, rather than becoming stagnant. In some cases this won t be possible (i.e. where a Turbo Smart is installed onto an existing suction line) and this is acceptable, the system will still function, however where possible (i.e. new installations) the slope should be in the line. **The lift from the bottom of the pipe to the base of the Turbo Smart should be no greater than 500mm. While the maximum is 500mm, this rise should be kept as low as possible (the lower the better). What happens at this point in the pipe? The fluids gather slightly at the bottom of the pipe and then a volume of fluids will get sucked through at once; the lower this rise the more chance the fluids has to all make it up and into the pump, the higher the lift the more fluid will fall back down. If the rise is too high fluids will collect here and effect suction performance. NB: The Turbo Smart can also be installed at a level lower than the surgeries (in this case the run-on of the Turbo Smart should be set to the maximum of 120 seconds). Exhaust air Exhaust air should be vented into a non-populated area, and in accordance with any local regulations (normally this means above roof-line). The exhaust pipe should be at least the same size as the inlet from the surgeries (for a Turbo Smart this means 50mm). The exhaust pipe should have no angles greater than 45 degrees (a 90 degree bend can be achieved by having 2 X 45 degree bends). Connection to drain The drain should be connected according to the local plumbing code (it varies from area to area). To avoid noises coming through the suction line from the drain, you can mount the tube with a small rise out of the connection on the Turbo Smart before then connecting to waste (see drawing to the right). The drain fluids can pump up to a height of 1500mm. NB: If ISO-18 amalgam retention is fitted, the fluids must gravity drain out of the Turbo Smart to drain connection. 22 drain exhaust air
Pipeline design The pipeline should be designed with: No angles greater than 45 degrees (where a 90 degree bend is required 2 X 45 degree bends should be used). The size of the main pipeline should decrease further along the line (see below diagrams). The main pipeline should have a minimum 1 degree fall from the last surgery towards the suction pump Turbo Smart B: Maximum distance between E and D1-15m NB: 50mm main line when connected to 4 surgeries, 40mm main line when connected to 3 surgeries Turbo Smart B A - Main suction line C - 45 degree bends E - Turbo Smart B - Branch D1 - Inspection point The above diagrams show the typical pipeline of Turbo Smart A for 2 surgeries (right) and Turbo Smart B for 3-4 surgeries (above). Please note that there are two main pipeline sizes for Turbo Smart B: 40mm main line when connected to 3 surgeries 50mm main line when connected to 4 surgeries If there are any reasons that the pipeline cannot be laid out as per the above instructions, please contact us so that we can plan the best alternative. Turbo Smart A Turbo Smart A: Maximum distance between E and D1-10m Main line is 40mm 23
Tandem systems How is a tandem system plumbed? As is shown in the diagram, two or more Turbo Smarts can be connected to the same suction line. There is no need to have any valves, or extra plumbing to switch from one unit to the other. As can be seen in the diagram to the right, the main suction line reduces in size after the Y-junction to the first Turbo Smart, for example, a main suction line of 65mm is reduced to 50mm after the connection to the first Turbo Smart. Please contact us for assistance with designing the pipeline or plant-area of your tandem Turbo Smart suction system. Pipe size for Tandem Turbo Smarts: System Max. no. surgeries Size main suction line Tandem A 5 50mm Triple A 7 65mm Tandem B 8 65mm Triple B 12 80mm Quad B 16 90mm Alarm contacts The Turbo Smart exhaust is fitted standard with a non-return valve. This valve is fitted so that if there is a problem with one Turbo Smart and it stops running, the operational Turbo Smart won t aspirate air through the idle Turbo Smart s exhaust. If this happened the majority of air would be aspirated through the idle Turbo Smart, and the surgeries would have very little suction. Instead, this valve is sucked closed, and air, stopping the running Turbo Smart aspirating The Turbo Smart has alarm contacts that close when there is an error code (any code, be it over-temperature, full amalgam cup, problem with the pcb). In a tandem Turbo Smart system, we strongly recommend that you fit an alarm panel as shown above (see page 29 for price and details) in the reception area (or any high visable area). Otherwise there may be a problem with one of the Turbo Smarts that goes unnoticed (until there is a problem with the other unit) - having a light come on in the clinic alerts staff to the problem so that it can be quickly addressed and resolved. 25
