2 1.0 Introduction Since 1969, NRD has produced ionizing radioactive sources that are used in static control, smoke detectors, physics research, space exploration, and instrumentation. NRD is the world s largest and one of the oldest suppliers of radioactive metallic foils. Specially designed equipment and facilities enable us to produce a sealed source device that is safe and is highly effective in eliminating static. 1.1 Our Thanks Thank you for choosing NRD for your static control needs. Please review the information in this manual to maximize the benefit of The Neutralizer TM Refinishing Gun. 1.2 Other NRD Products NRD offers static eliminating devices and accessories to eliminate or control electrostatic charges. Detailed data sheets and informational notes are available upon request. 1.3 Customer Support Toll Free Number General Listing Fax Number :00 AM 5:00 PM Eastern Time (M-F) 2.0 Important Information All radioactive devices using Polonium-210 are leased for one (1) year. It is important to keep track of these units so that they can be returned to NRD for proper disposal. If the device is misplaced, please call NRD for information on how to report the lost device. 2.1 Safety of NRD Ionizers The radioactive material (Polonium-210) is 100% encapsulated using a pressure welded metallurgy technique. Vibration and impact normal to industrial applications will not adversely affect product integrity. The alpha particles come from the natural decay of the radioactive source and collide with air molecules to create ions. However, alpha particles are unable to penetrate a thin piece of paper or human skin! Complete safety is ensured when the ionizers are used in accordance with normal mounting and operating conditions. Normal use and conditions of the ionizer include: Temperature not to exceed 180 F (80 C). Use clean, dry, filtered, compressed air. You can safely handle the outside of the ionizing cartridge. Do not insert any object or attempt to clean the inside of the ionizing cartridge. 1

3 Review the enclosed Safety Brochure for a more detailed description of how the ionizers work, where they are typically used, and the general safety of NRD ionizers. 2.2 Lease Agreement All ionizers containing Polonium-210 are leased, not purchased. The devices are leased for two main reasons: 1.) Federal Regulations state that the device must be tested prior to shipping and before 13 months from the date of manufacture. NRD performs these tests and provides you with a Test Certificate as documentation. 2.) The activity of the ionizing cartridge decreases over time. At the end of 12 months, the device needs to be replaced in order to maintain its effectiveness. NRD will notify you when it is time to return the device. To renew the lease when the device reaches its 12 month expiration (the manufactured date is printed on the label of device), simply provide us with a new purchase order to make the original lease valid for another 12 months. Upon delivery of the new device, remove the old ionizing cartridge from service and ship it back in accordance with the Return Shipping Instructions. 2.3 Return of Expired Devices Expired P-2021-Z000 Ionizers (12 months or older) can be returned to NRD for proper disposal according to the Return Shipping Instructions included in this manual. A Return Authorization (RA) is NOT required prior to sending a device back for disposal. 3.0 Installation & Operation Warranty Note: Failure to use a clean, dry, filtered, compressed air will VOID manufacturer s warranty. Air filters remove oil, water, and other debris from compressed air that could impede performance of the refinishing gun, damage your air tool or part surface. Inquire about filter options. 1. NO assembly of gun kit components is necessary. However, we recommend checking the connection of the ionizing cartridge and air dispersion tip for a secure fit before connecting the compressed air supply. If the parts become loosened, apply a small amount of removable adhesive (Loctite 242) to the threads. 2. The Neutralizer Refinishing Gun does NOT require an electrical power supply. 3. The Neutralizer Refinishing Gun handle has been designed with a 1/8-27 NPSM to accept our ionizing cartridge. Attempting to use this cartridge in any other gun handle may jeopardize performance of the gun kit and VOID manufacturer s warranty. 4. Attach the gun to the 1/4 NPT hose fitting by screwing the base of the handle securely into the fitting. Use teflon tape as needed. 5. Regulate air supply. Recommended maximum flow-rate 50 SCFH. Recommended inlet pressure is 40 psig. 6. Always use the provided OSHA approved safety tip to prevent air pressure injury in the case the nozzle is dead-ended against a person s skin. The air dispersion tip meets OSHA standard maximum restricted nozzle pressure of 30 psig at 100 psig inlet pressure. 7. Squeeze trigger to begin air flow and continue cleaning in ~6 inch slow, sweeping paths covering entire part. A powerful stream of ionized air will flow over objects and quickly neutralize electrostatic charges, and remove dust and other foreign particulate clinging due to static attraction. 2

4 Use of The Neutralizer Refinishing Gun for removal of static charges should be the last step before applying paint. If it becomes necessary to remove any foreign particles by wiping or rubbing, we recommend you REPEAT cleaning with the refinishing gun. This ensures static charges have been removed from the entire surface preventing re-attraction of dust and debris. 4.0 Maintenance and Calibration NO MAINTENANCE is required. NEVER ATTEMPT CLEANING The attempt to use solvents or other fluids through any part of The Neutralizer Refinishing Gun will damage the ionizing cartridge and render it useless. The use of any substance other than clean, dry, filtered, compressed air will VOID manufacturer s warranty. Please contact NRD, LLC for a replacement. NO CALIBRATION is required To ensure maximum static charge removal, the ion cartridge (Model P-2021-Z005) installed in The Neutralizer Refinishing Gun must be replaced annually regardless of usage. The replacement date is one year after the date of manufacture (stamped on the ion cartridge). NRD, LLC Customer Service will remind our customers of the replacement before the expiration date. 5 5.0 Trouble Shooting Guide Symptom Probable Cause Corrective Action 1. Static charges are not eliminated Ion cartridge may be out of date and need replacement. Call NRD for Ion Cartridge replacement. Possible oil contamination of ion cartridge. Return cartridge to NRD for evaluation. Do not attempt to clean the device. Ions generated are being recombined before they reach the charged surface. The Neutralizer air exit needs to be closer to the charged surface. 2. Air flow is reduced Upstream filter(s) are plugged and/or air pressure is low. Replace upstream filter(s) and/or increase air pressure (100 psig max). 3. Squeezing gun handle trigger does not initiate air flow Air supply is shut off or obstructed. Trigger plunger mechanism damaged. Open all shut-off valves and check for crimp in air line or other obstructions. Contact NRD for replacement gun handle. 4. Releasing trigger does not stop the air flow Foreign matter trapped in the shutoff valve of the gun. Clean air hoses, replace upstream filter(s) and contact NRD for replacement gun. 6.0 Assembly

These are based on the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations covering the use of radioactive material. Section 29 CFR (p) specifies that an employer who uses radioactive material under the terms of a valid NRC or Agreement State license shall be deemed to be in compliance with the requirements of this section with respect to such possession and use. Since you become a General Licensee by receiving our devices, you shall be deemed to be in compliance with the OSHA requirements with regard to the use of our nuclear static eliminator, provided that you use them in accordance with the instruction sheets provided to you with these devices. Hazard Communication / Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Exclusion Ionizing devices manufactured by NRD LLC are excluded from the OSHA Hazard Communication and Material Safety Data sheet requirements. This exclusion is stated under 29 CFR (b) (6) (xi). NRD LLC will not issue an MSDS for this reason. All required instructions are included with each product shipped.
