1 BIO-MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT SES/BWMS 1. FINISHING SCHEDULE OF BIO-MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT AREA Description. Height of False ceiling shall be 3000 mm from FFL Glass fitted into aluminium frame with openable shutter Glass fitted into aluminium frame with openable shutter Forced ventilation with industrial blower Forced ventilation with exhaust blower Negative Pressure Normal LED/CFL/Fluorescent light shall be used to produce Lux LED/CFL/Fluorescent light shall be used to produce Lux 2. General BWM area should be located on the ground at the corner or at the backside of the hospital premises outside the hospital building where the public movement will be less and accessible to the transport. Height of the BWM area and Boiler room should be m. BWM area should have dirty entry at one side and clean exit at the other side. BWM area should have trolley bay and container bay at the dirty entry and at the clean exit Dirty solid waste is sorted out based on infectious/non infectious wastes etc. Non-infectious waste are fed to the Incinerator. Infectious is sterilized with Autoclave/Micoroven and then fed to the Shredder and then shredded wastes are packed into coloured packets before despatched to the CBWF (Common Biomedical Waste facility) of the local municipality. Incinerator needs clearance from SPCB/CPCB. Statutory authority should be approached for clearance before installation of the Incinerator since the local body of many cities in India do not allow installation of Incinerator within the city. Fire Extinguisher should be placed inside the BWM area.
2 BWM area needs soft water of 70 PPM. Covered drainage line should be provided for Wash area. The opening part of the drain should be covered with CI grating. Drain line of CI/Cast steel for hot water drain and HDPE/PVC pipe for normal water drain. CPVC pipeline for water supply is required to the Autoclave and Incinerator.. The tentative equipment to be installed and commissioned in the BWM area are : Incinerator, Autoclave/Microven, Shredder and Laundry furniture etc. 1. COLOUR CODING AND TYPE OF CONTAINER AND TREATMENT FOR DISPOSAL OF BIO-MEDICAL WASTE Colour Type of Container Waste Category Treatment/Disposal option Coding Yellow Plastic Bag Human Anatomical wastes, Animal wastes, Incineration / Deep Burial Microbiology and Biotechnology waste (Infectious wastes from laboratory) Red Disinfected container / plastic bag Microbiology and Biotechnology wastes, Soiled wastes and solid wastes Autoclave/Microwave/Chemical Treatment Blue/White Plastic bag/puncture Waste Sharps and solid wastes Autoclave/Microwave/Chemical Translucent proof Container Treatment/Destruction and Shredding Black Plastic bag Discarded medicines, Cytotoxic drugs, Disposal in secured landfills Incineration ash and chemical waste 2. Waste Collection Bags The yellow coloured polythene for waste collection shall be made on non-chlorinated polythene which can be safely incinerated without having to open the bag. The bags shall be of colours as per recommendation of Ministry of Environment & Forests. Each bag can be easily tied up when it is full without touching the contaminated waste. The bags shall have bio-hazard symbol and inscription of type of waste to be collected into it.
3 The red, blue/white translucent poly bags used for collection of plastic and other solid waste are safe for autoclaving. The bags are specially designed to withstand high temperatures during autoclaving. 3. Waste Collection Containers The Poly bags should be placed inside the collection containers which in turn shall be placed at locations where waste is actually generated so that its segregation and collection is possible at the source itself. The Collection containers are specially designed with following features Foot operated lid Sturdy construction Arrangement for holding non-chlorinated poly bags Steel construction with epoxy power coating for durability The collection container(s) shall be with or without caster wheels depending on the location of its placement. The waste collection containers shall be of different colors for easy identification of waste that is to go into it. 4. Waste Transportation Easily movable trolleys with large castor wheels shall be provided for collection of waste from different areas of the hospital and transporting the waste to the waste management yard. The trolleys shall have large containers with foot operated covers, mounted on the base framework. The trolleys shall be of sturdy construction and provided with castor wheels to easily move through various areas of the hospital. Poly bags shall be tied and taken out from the waste collection containers, which will be put into the transportation trolleys and then taken to the waste treatment yard for treatment and disposal. Persons handling poly bags shall be provided with protective gloves.

Waste Treatment Waste collection trolleys shall be taken to the waste treatment building for its treatment / decontamination through shredding & autoclaving and thereafter the waste shall be disposed off. 6. Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility A Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility shall be provided with the following areas: Waste storage area Waste sorting area Waste Treatment area Treated Waste collection and disposal area Trolley Park area
