6 Decentralised Water Management Versorgung Trinkwasser Versorgung Betriebswasser Wasserquelle Regen- und Brunnenwasser Wasserquelle Grauwasser Entsorgung Abwasser The severely rising pollution of water bodies and the ground water, as well as the overexploitation of regional water resources caused by climate change, continuing industrialisation, and a growing global population all lead to serious constraints for using water resources as high-quality potable water. Therefor the question if the existing centralised infrastructure for water supply and disposal is sustainable is irrelevant. The question is rather when these utilities cannot economically cope anymore with the challenges to retain the ecological functions of our water bodies and the ground water so that even in western industrialised countries clean potable water becomes a rare and expensive commodity. It is time to establish a sustainable water economy that ensures an environmentally friendly way for the extraction, distribution and disposal of water and at the same time provides for an increase in efficiency in water utilisation. 5

7 Decentralised water management takes into account all potential water sources and possible points of consumption, and it combines and optimises water supply and disposal with the objective of treating the resource water in an economically and ecologically sensible manner without changing the water demand. This objective is attained by using high-quality water from alternative water sources and water recycling in points of consumption where no precious and expensive water is needed. Potable water is not necessary in all of those applications! Since water consumption is an important cost factor in many areas of life and work (housing, commerce, municipality, industry, hotels) a decentralised water management offers the opportunity to private individuals, companies, and investors to sustainably reduce costs from water supply and disposal and at the same time contribute to protecting the environment. Therefor the establishment of a decentralised water management is a necessary measure from the ecological perspective and a reasonable one from the economical perspective. 6

8 Rainwater utilisation Utilising free rain water allows up to 50 % of the potable water needs of a family household to be replaced in applications where potable water is not required. The savings in commercial and public systems can be over 90 %. A variety of applications such as toilet flushes, washing machines, garden watering and cleaning can use rain water thanks to its particularly high quality. There are additional applications in the industrial and commercial fields. There are many benefits to using rain water. Saving drinking water lowers water costs and makes a significant contribution to environmental protection. However, there are additional benefits due to the special quality of rain water: - in toilet flushes: less urine scale formation - in washing machines: 50 % less washing detergent - in watering gardens: promotion of plant growth A modern rain water utilisation system consists of two basic components: The RainwaterManager, a compact central management unit with a pump, control equipment and automatic potable water backfeed and the rain water storage tank with an integrated filter, smoothing inlet, floating extraction device and overflow pipe. The RainwaterManager is installed inside the building and the rain water storage tank is located either in the ground outside or in the basement. The RainwaterManager controls the system and ensures operational reliability. This is where the water is drawn out of the storage tank and transported to the supply points in the building. At the same time, it monitors the water level in the cistern and automatically switches to potable water operation as soon as there is too little rain water in the storage tank. In this case, potable water is back fed within the building depending on requirements, guaranteeing a constant supply of water at all times. 7

The RainwaterManager is entirely made of soundabsorbing and recyclable materials, all parts that have water contact are corrosion resistant. The unit disposes of a multilevel rotary pump with an automatic on/off-mechanism, dryrun protection as well as a connection for each potable water, pressure, and suction, all having detachable screw joints. The unit also comprises a motorised switch valve to safely switch over, with function monitoring and a connection for an optional feeder pump. Due to its free outlet overflow in accordance with DIN EN 1717 and an automatic water exchange in the feed container, the RainwaterManager complies with all requirements regarding potable water hygiene. Due to its free outlet overflow in accordance with DIN EN 1717 and an automatic water exchange in the feed container, the backfeed module complies with all requirements regarding potable water hygiene. 20 Rainwater system control SuperServer Garden 5-60 PWM Feeder pump (p. 16) SuperServer Garden is a fully automatic rainwater central for the control, surveillance and maintenance of large service water systems. It is ideally suited to be combined with an automatic garden irrigation. The tank system is made of PE (impermeable to light) including an overflow outlet (DN 100 standard), connection nozzle for charge pumps to feed in rainwater, removable lid, including potable water backfeed. Immersion pressure pump Pulsar Dry made of stainless steel. Connection for a floating extraction on the side. Multi-level underwater monoblock pump with hydraulics module under the motor, which is cooled by the pumped liquid. Rotors, diffusors, filter and oil sump are made of friction-resistant thermo-plastic material. Outer jacket, stator jacket, upper head end with boot and lock ring all made of AISI 304 steel. Electronic frequency control for pumps to maintain a constant adjusted pressure in the system. The PWM works on the pressure side of the pump and controls the rotation speed in order to ensure that the chosen supply pressure is constantly on the same level. 21 Rainwater system control iserver 9-50 DPA Feeder pump (p. 16) iserver is a fully automatic rainwater central for the control, surveillance and maintenance of large service water systems. The tank system is made of PE (impermeable to light) including an overflow outlet (DN 100 standard), connection nozzle for charge pumps to feed in rainwater, removable lid, control box for wall installation. Double pump system composed of high performance, multi-level immersion pressure pumps made of plastic, quiet operation, corrosion resistant, suction with a filter sieve. The pumps are operated with a double pump control that regulates the alternating start of the pumps. The second pump can be switched on additionally to cover peak demand. The starting pressure is easily adjustable. The control ensures an energy efficient operation of the system. Integrated dry-run protection and alarm signal when a pump motor is blocked. When required a GSM or network modem can be postprepared for the remote monitoring. 47 Greywater utilisation ewuaqua Greywater utilisation There is currently no single, explicit, globally recognised definition of greywater. The European Standard defines greywater as wastewater with a low pollution level and no faecal matter such as produced by shower, bath, wash basin and washing machine and which can be used to prepare service water. In contrast, wastewater from the kitchen is not included due to the high levels of fats and food waste it contains. The use of greywater, like the use of rainwater or well water, is a suitable way of reducing potable water consumed in buildings, helps protect the environment and lower the costs of water consumption. Furthermore, less wastewater is produced as a result of recycling greywater since the water is used twice, which leads to additional ecological and economic potential. It can be safely said that greywater recycling in large groups of buildings and hotels can be a sensible means of saving water and wastewater with little effort and offers significant returns due to its relatively low level of contamination, representing an extremely efficient way of cutting costs. There are various technical approaches to recycle greywater. Technologies differ considerably in their complexity, size, recycling performance and recycling quality. There are direct-use systems, retention systems as well as physical, chemical, biological and biomechanical systems. Comparative studies have shown that the membrane bio-reactor (MBR) currently represents the best technology to recycle greywater thanks to its outstanding cleaning performance. Greywater systems using MBR technology also have the advantage that they require little space and can guarantee the relevant quality parameters even if the inflow characteristics fluctuate, which means that the requirements of the European Directive concerning the quality of bathing water are always guaranteed. 46

57 Well water utilisation ewuaqua Well water utilisation The use of well water is a widespread technology in many regions. Well water is perfectly well suited for toilets, washing machines and for gardening. Additionally there are many possible applications in industrial and agricultural uses. In these instances it could be used for example in cleaning, cooling or irrigation processes. In general it is possible to use well water to cover the whole domestic consumption. However, that depends on the particular municipal regulations. The well water is extracted straight from the ground water with a well pump and then supplied into the service water piping. Modern pump controls are used to control the pumps in an energy efficient manner by regulating the output and switching the pumps on and off depending on demand. 56

58 The principle of operation is safe and easy: The pump is turned on automatically once an appliance consumes water. As soon as the appliance stops consuming water, the pump is turned off. Additionally, the pump controls usually dispose of a protection against dry operation so that the pump is turned off if not enough water is available. Modern pump controls regulate the well pumps in a way that they pump water with a constant pressure. By changing the pump s motor speed it is made sure it produces only the necessary performance. With its 3-level filtration the iclean is ideally suited to re-clean well water, greywater or rainwater before use. By using rainwater, valuable groundwater resources are protected and unused rainwater is seeped in the ground. This combination is also called in technical terms a rainwater management system. A seepage system is economically the perfect addition to using rainwater since the costs of feeding the excess rainwater into the sewer are usually no longer applicable. It also relieves the sewer of the excess water load and the unused water returns to the natural water cycle. 101 Multifilter iclean iclean automatic iclean is a water filter system integrated in a plastic casing. With its 3-level filtration the iclean is ideally suited to re-clean well water, greywater or rainwater before use. The first filter level is a self-cleaning stainless steel membrane with a mesh size of 90 micron. A cotton filter is in place in the second filtration step. It is filtering the water again with a mesh size of 25 micron. In order to remove the last potential impurities, smells, discolourations, and bacteria, there is a charcoal filter in the last filtration level. With the iclean automatic, the required cleaning intervals can be adjusted. The electronic control is then automatically opening a magnet valve that self-cleans the filter by backflushing it. The iclean has a manual valve for the backflushing of the filter. The volume flow is 5,5 m 3 /h at a flow pressure of 3 bar.
