Whether or not your scanner gives you good, accurate service depends mainly on what kind of care you take to keep it clean. The responsibility for cleaning rests with you, the user of the scanner! This chapter discusses the procedures you need to follow to keep your scanner in peak condition. It tells you what you need to know about the cleaning:. Schedule. Supplies. If you scan an extremely large number of sheets, scan sheets that are in poor condition, or receive poor results from your scanner, you may need to clean the scanner more often. Generally speaking, though, remember: To clean the scanner, set up a monthly cleaning schedule..e i Jr' J; Supplies Most of the supplies that you need for cleaning the scanner are common in most work environments. Use only those supplies that NCS Pearson recommends below. To clean the scanner, use these supplies:. Ammoniated glasscleaning solution (for use only on the read head Note:. Lintfree cloths (3. Staticreducing solution. Canned air NCS Pearson offers cleaning supplies that you need for cleaning your scanner. This includes cleaning solution pads and lintfree swabs with solution. 3 , Procedure Transport Bed The transport bed and the read head require regularly scheduled cleaning. Once you are familiar with the steps of the cleaning procedure, periodic cleaning for these areas usually requires little time and effort. ' A description of the cleaning procedure follows. Carefully complete all steps. Each is important in ensuring that the scanner operates at peak performance. To clean the scanner, follow these five steps: J 1. Clean the transport bed.. Unlatch the read head and carefully lift it back until it "catches." Note: Also unlatch and carefully lift back the covers on both the bar code reader and printer, if you have these optional pieces of equipment attached to your scanner. Deflector covers are always present even if the option is not installed.. Optional step for those who scan a large number of sheets Spray canned air directly on the transport bed area. This removes large amounts of dust and other types of debris. ( 63

4 . Select a clean, lintfree cloth. Lightly dampen the cloth with water or with a staticreducing solution. 2!: p 6 e E f. Using the dampened cloth, wipe along the transport bed. Start at one end of the bed and continue to the other. Transport Bed. i1 r0 Ė. CAUTION: Since the scanner is always ON,you must take care to not allow water to reach the interior parts of the scanner. If this happens, a short circuit could occur! 'i V L r L : 2. Clean the two drive rollers and the pick roller.. Note the three small rollers located inside the front of the scanner, close to the read head and beneath the bar code reader, if one is attached. The two smaller rollers are called arilje rotters. Tl'l~Y ffi'0v'c.c sh'c.'c.tcbn'e; as it is being scanned. The largest roller, closest to the input tray, is called the pick roller. 5 . Lightly dampen a clean, lintfree cloth with soapy water. Use a mild detergent for your soap.. Locate the drive rollers. CAUTION:Do NOT touch the read head with the soapy cloth. Soap can damage the read head. Top View I Wipe the drive rollers using the lightly dampened cloth. Drive Rollers. Locate the pick roller. CAUTION:Do NOT touch the read head with the soapy cloth. Soap can damage the read head. Top View Lightly dampen another clean, lintfree cloth with soapy water. Turn the pick roller with one finger, wiping off the roller as you turn it. This procedure removes graphite and other debris that collects on the roller. 65

6 if 80 Cleaning the Scanner 3. Clean the skew sensor.. Note the skew sensor, a small, metal plate that is located at the front of the scanner, between the read head area and a drive roller. The skew sensor senses whether sheets are feeding into the scanner in proper alignment. TopView : Jk:.o t;.:1 1 f', E J LL r.. Spray canned air on the skew sensor if you have a can available. Otherwise, use a piece of paper toweling to carefully remove dust that accumulates on the sensor and its surrounding area. <L ;. Ḻ p:..."" Skew Sensor. JI rr 4. Clean the read head.. Select another clean, lintfree cloth and some glass cleaner. Lightly dampen the cloth with glass cleaner. Upper Read Head Il,.!. CAUTION: Do NOT use a generalpurpose cleaner or soap and water to clean any part of the read head, and do NOT spray the glass cleaner directly on the read head! g fi Using the cloth, clean the glass on the top of the read head.! 7 . Clean the glass beneath the top read head. Note: Single head units do not have this glass. Instead, they have a black, shiny tape which must also be cleaned.. Clean out any dust or debris that has collected in the area between the top and the bottom of the read head where it is hinged. rt CAUTION: Using canned air on the read head may accidently blow dust into it. 5. Reposition the read head by carefully lowering it until it clicks into place. (Also reposition the bar code reader and printer if they are attached ~
