4 2. Fields of Application The combines many positive features in one component. Its integrated hydronic junction ensures optimum hydraulic decoupling of the boiler circuit from the consumer circuits, and the compact manifold placed horizontally above it offers a space-saving configuration of the heating circuits. Developed for building services, especially for use in single-boiler systems, the small-scale is the optimum solution for combined and space-saving heating circuit configurations. A system with two or more heating circuits neither needs additional installation resources nor additional space. Return temperature increase is prevented if the condensing unit has a junction control with primary-side volumetric flow adjustment. The records the system supply temperature and compares it to the boiler supply temperature. In this way, the volumetric flow conditions in the hydronic junction can be inferred, and the speed of the integrated pump is adjusted accordingly. 6 5. Functions 5.1 Layout It is a compact unit combining the advantages of the space-saving heating circuit arrangement of a compact manifold with the functionality of a hydronic junction. The manifold features two consecutive flow and return chambers separated by a sinusoidal parting wall. At the, two openings of the subjacent hydronic junction lead into the aforementioned chambers. Since these openings are situated close to the end caps of the junction body, the hydronic junction s entire water content can be used as a buffer volume for longer response times of the control system at the hydraulic balancing. As a consequence, the hydronic junction is always flown through in by-pass operation preventing any thermal layering. Accordingly, it is not imperative anymore to position the hydronic junction vertically as the force fields there (buoyancy and gravitation force) cannot influence the flow force due to the deliberate admission. Based on that knowledge, hydronic junctions can be built in either vertically or horizontally without impairing the main function of hydraulic decoupling. These facts were taken as a basis for the development and in turn designing a system component which is highly flexible to install. The essentail function of hydronic junctions in heating systems is to ensure the hydraulic decoupling between the boiler circuit and the consumer circuit(s). In particular, if the volume flows of the heat consumers and heat generator(s) are of different sizes, hydronic junctions are the ideal solution in order to eliminate faulty hydraulic switching operations. In vertically built-in hydronic junctions, temperature stratification emerges due to the temperature difference and, as a result, a difference in density. This state continues as long as no admixing takes place. However, the described phenomenon only occurs in heating systems in full-load operation. Therefore, today, temperature stratification is not placed at an increased value. When using condensing boilers, part of the return water is generally added to the secondary flow in order to keep the boiler return temperature low for utilizing the effect of condensation. 7 To operate the smoothly, it is necessary to provide a requirement-specific dimensioning of the base bodies and a proper positioning of the inlet and outlet openings between the junction and manifold. As with vertical hydronic junctions, integrated junctions are designed in a way that laminar flow conditions prevail. Consequently, the cross-sectional area of the junction must be a multiple of the feed pipe cross section. Observing these criteria during the design phase ensures both the smooth operation of the heating unit and the flawless functioning of the hydraulic system. 5.2 Configuration To provide optimum functionality, the must comply with certain design criteria. Of primary importance is the correct dimensioning of the junction body and the chamber sizing resulting therefrom to ensure that predominantly laminar or steady flow conditions with low pressure loss prevail even under full load. 8 Flow and return may converge in the hydronic junction without any interference of the circuits. The charts below show the appropriate sizes for particular water flow rates and heat capacities. In the capacity range < 7m³/h, prefabricated components are available which can be equipped with all standard pump groups (see page 4, left figure). In the capacity range > 7m³/h, the connector arrangements of the heating circuits are made according to local conditions and requirements ensuring that the can be optimally integrated in the boiler room as a space-saving junction unit. 9 5.3 Connection Options Additional positive features of the compact manifold open up a multitude of connection options. They allow placing the boiler flow and return lines from below or alternately next to each other or at both ends of the manifold. In all events, optimum hydraulic decoupling is warranted. The medium always flows through the manifold in cocurrent flow. Regular flow rates and thus the availability of heating water are guaranteed throughout the system. Multiple Temperature Zone Applications with Multivalent Heating Systems The increasing number of multivalent system types characterized by differently tempered generators/consumers places high demands on the management of the medium. Various temperature levels are to be used as effectively as possible where required. Pressure losses need to be minimized. Whenever condensing boilers are used in combination with a heat pump on the generation side or a CHP (combined heat and power plant) with a peak load boiler is to supply the necessary heat, the is the best choice. Optimum thermal and hydraulic functionality of the system is achieved through a proper, temperature-dependent arrangement of the connectors of both heat generators and consumers.
