1 MSU LAW HOUSING GUIDE 2018 Welcome to MSU Law! This guide provides a quick snapshot of local apartments. We don t endorse any particular location, but this guide can offer a starting point in your housing search. MSU Law encourages you to share housing with at least one other student. 2 University Housing or Off Campus Housing? Each year between 80 and 100 law students choose to live in Owen Residence Hall, a dorm style option that is just a few hundred yards from the College of Law. Living in Owen Hall is no less expensive than many off campus options, but residents of Owen value the convenience, the academic year lease, in building dining services, and the community that is part of living in a traditional residence hall. The great majority of MSU Law students choose to live in off campus housing in East Lansing, Okemos, or Lansing. Off campus housing is plentiful and varies based on amenities and distance from campus. CATA and Parking Nearby parking for law students is very limited, with most students assigned to park in a remote lot that has bus transportation to the Law College. The area s public transportation system the Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) is both convenient and much less expensive than operating a car. Bus service linking campus and larger apartment complexes is the norm, as is service to the major shopping areas. Since most local buses drop you off at the doorstep of MSU Law (our parking structure is the main bus center for East Lansing), it s the most convenient when commuting to campus. How do MSU Law students find roommates? Law students can access one or more resources when searching for a roommate(s), including the College of Law Roommate Clearinghouse service and the Facebook group for admitted candidates. The Roommate Clearinghouse service requires incoming students to complete a form that includes personal characteristics and preferences, as well as interest areas in the field of law. Every student who completes a form then is provided a PDF for all incoming students who have completed the form. A final option would be to utilize the roommate finder service offered by the university s off campus housing office. This service allows you to set a rental price range and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms to help narrow down apartment choices.
