2 GI SERIES GREASE TRAP INSTALLATION GUIDE Overview Atlantic Metalworks GI series grease traps are designed to meet the needs of large and small commercial kitchens. Grease capacities range from 8-100lbs and the carbon steel construction makes the grease traps extremely durable. All of our GI series grease traps are backed by a one year warranty on material and workmanship, and are PDI (Plumbing and Drainage Institute) certified, guaranteeing that the grease traps will match or surpass industry standards.

3 Pre-Installation Checklist A few things to consider prior to installation: Make sure the location where the grease trap will be installed is clean, flat, and solid. Do not install the grease trap backwards. Look for markings on the grease trap for designations of the inlet and outlet side. Image 1 - location of inlet marking Open the grease trap and check its internal components. Contact us immediately if the baffle or flow control device is missing. See the footer for our contact information and hours of operation. A - flow control device B - installation guide C - baffle B A C Please note that the picture to the left shows pre-drilled holes for four bolts - 2 per stabilization bar. This applies only to the GI-50 and larger units. Smaller units will only have one pre-drilled hole for one stabilization bar. Image 2 - internal components 3

4 We recommend that you hold all clearances around and above the grease trap at a minimum of 12 inches for maintenance and cleaning purposes. This allows for ease of access during maintenance. The placement of your grease trap should allow the cover to be visible and easily removable for cleaning, and clearances should be such that the internal baffling can be serviced. With the cover removed, all wetted surfaces should be visible. This is necessary not only for access to clean the grease trap, but also to easily inspect the interior for potential problems such as damaged baffles and blocked air relief bypasses See image 3 below for an example of a set-up with proper clearances. 5 Installation Instructions Diagram 1 - Installation Layout Sink Vented Waste Air-Intake Vent Grease Trap Vented Flow Control Required Flow Control Device IMPORTANT NOTE: The grease trap was tested and rated with the use of a flow control device. This device has been included with the grease trap. Any attempt to use the grease trap without the flow control device will compromise the functionality of the grease trap, which means clogged drains and fines from regulatory bodies. 5

6 Installation Steps 1. You will need a minimum of 4 no-hub couplers to properly install your grease trap. One no hub-coupler for venting and three for the rest of the plumbing directly connected to the grease trap. See the Dimensions and Specifications sheet on page 12 for the required sizes of the no-hub couplers. Install the no-hub coupler on the grease trap inlet side as seen in image 4 below. Image 4 connecting the no-hub coupler 2. After removing the flow control device from the grease trap, locate the grease trap inlet and outlet positions. Position the grease trap so that the inlet position is closest to the equipment you are hooking up to. For optimal performance, the grease trap should be installed as close to the sink as possible while still allowing for the proper clearances to be maintained. See image 3 on page three. 6

7 WARNING DO NOT INSTALL THE GREASE TRAP BACKWARDS. Verify the inlet and outlet positions. Ensure that the flow control is connected to the baffle side of the grease trap as shown in image 5 below. Notice from image 6 below that the flow control device should be installed on the inlet side of the grease trap. 7

8 3. Install the flow control device between the sink and the inlet side of the grease trap as illustrated in image 6 below. See image 3 on page three for additional reference. The inlet side should be installed facing the equipment/sink and the outlet side facing the inlet of the grease trap. See the image below for the proper installation orientation of the flow control device. To the sink/inlet Note that the open slot in the device is on the grease trap side of the device. 9 4. Once the flow control device is connected to the grease trap, install an appropriately sized no-hub coupler to the vent of the flow control device as shown in image 8 below. See the Dimensions and Specifications sheet for the required coupler sizes per application. Image 8 flow control vent connection 5. The flow control device is now ready to be connected to your sink. 10 6. Vent the flow control device/tee as illustrated in Diagram 1 to ensure the optimal performance of your grease trap. The flow control device must be properly vented to permit air to properly mix with the fluid entering the grease trap. Air facilitates FOG separation and is necessary for proper operation. Without the vented flow control device, wastewater flows will exceed the rated capacity of your grease trap, causing incoming wastewater to pass through your grease trap before the separation of FOGs and food solids. This will result in the buildup of grease downstream, which defeats the purpose of your grease trap. 7. Install a no-hub coupler and make the plumbing connection to the outlet side. See image 10 below. WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL THE FLOW CONTROL DEVICE TO THE OUTLET SIDE. Image 10 connection to the outlet side 10

11 8. Set the lid back in place and secure the lid retaining bolts. Make sure the rubber gasket is clean to ensure a good seal. Image 11 final seal 9. Check the integrity of all connections and the lid gasket by filling the grease trap with water from the equipment connected to the grease trap. 11

12 Maintenance Due to the hazardous nature of FOGs, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times during any maintenance performed on the grease trap. TIP: One week after installation, check the grease level inside the grease trap. The results after the first week of usage can be used to determine an appropriate cleaning schedule. Minimize the number of solids that enter the grease trap. The more solids there are, the more cleaning is necessary. Consider installing a solids trap if there is no way to minimize solids from entering the grease trap. 1. To clean, remove lid and baffle, then extract or skim grease into an empty container. As you clean, be sure to focus on the inlet, outlet and air relief ports. It is important to keep these clear of obstructions. 2. Place the cleaned baffle and lid back in place. Position the cleaned baffle back into its slot and secure the lid with its retaining bolts. 3. Do not forget to check the flow control device for clogs. The flow control device is also a serviceable component. Make sure to use nohub couplers to connect the device, to facilitate ease of access for inspection and cleaning as needed. 4. See local codes for safety regulations and contact a FOG collection and disposal company for region-specific guidelines for proper installation and grease disposal. You are responsible to keep the grease trap compliant with local, state, and federal regulations. Servicing and Troubleshooting The grease trap needs to be serviced regularly. You can choose to service it yourself or contact a professional grease trap servicing and maintenance company. If the grease trap is clogged, check the inlet side for any obstructions at the large flow reducing baffle. Your grease trap may need servicing if your sink drains slower than usual. Warranty Statement Atlantic Metalworks warranty covers defects in material and/or workmanship for a period of one year from the date of purchase. 12
