1 TEL: FAX: TOLL FREE: WEBSITE: Grease Interceptors Description of Operation: There are a few factors critical in the operation of a grease interceptor, which are: Design, Sizing, Proper installation and maintenance. Design: Mifab interceptors are manufactured with high inlets. This allows the incoming flow to completely drain out of the inlet lines, which reduces the chance of the lines being clogged with grease build up. Mifab interceptors are also manufactured with a removable vertical baffle plate. The baffle plate is designed to slow the incoming flow and redirect it to the bottom of the interceptor allowing for the longest retention time possible. The PL series has internal piping that directs the flow into the bottom of the interceptor. Mifab interceptors are manufactured as well with an integral deep seal trap, which has a built in air by pass relief. The trap is also built with a cleanout access point, so that if a blockage occurs downstream; it can be easily removed. To prevent odor from accumulated grease in the interceptor from coming back up through the fixture drain, a trap should be installed between the interceptor and the fixture. 2 Assembly: The grease interceptor should be installed as close as physically possible to the fixture that is intended to drain into it. This will help protect the incoming lines from becoming clogged with grease. 1. Install the Internal Inlet and Outlet Assemblies in the interceptor. a. Use PVC primer and cement to install the straight piece of PVC pipe to the sanitary tee. The XL-MI-G-PL-750 has the sanitary tee and PVC pipe already assembled. b. Then install them onto the internal connection of the installed bulk head fitting using PVC primer and cement. 2. Install the 18 diameter corrugated pipe onto the top opening(s) of the body, set the lid on top to measure the finishing height from the top of the lid to the drain pipe connections. The pipe can be cut with a saw to get a correct finishing height. 3. Install the Pipe gasket onto the bottom of the pipe as shown. Then firmly press the 18 diameter pipe into the top opening(s) of the interceptor. It will bottom out at the pipe stop.
3 4. Remove the cover from the lid assembly. Stick the lid gasket with the self adhesive onto the undeside of the collar. Place lid assembly onto the top of the corrugated pipe. Connect the lid assembly collar to the pipe with the 6 self tapping screws into the countersunk holes. Then reinstall the cover back onto the lid assembly collar. Typical Installation Layout
4 Installation: The interceptor should not be installed in any manner except as tested and rated. The grease interceptor should be installed as close as physically possible to the fixture that is intended to drain into it. This will help protect the incoming lines from becoming clogged with grease, as well as having the highest temperature of water possible coming into the interceptor which will aid in the grease separation. The grease interceptor can be installed, placed on the floor, partially recessed into the floor, fully recessed in the floor, so that the top of the lip is flush with the finished floor, or it can be installed underneath the floor. Please take into consideration that there is sufficient clearance above (min. 12 ) and to one side of the grease interceptor to allow for regular cleaning. If a high amount of solids is expected in the application a solids interceptor will be required before the grease interceptor as it is not designed to handle a large amount. A large amount of solids in a grease interceptor will greatly reduce its efficiency. Pipe supports should be located every 4 on all vertical and horizontal lines, allow for expansion every 30. Refer to local codes and guidelines. Installation Requirements For Lid Assembly: 1. The lid assembly installation should comply with the design or requirements. 2. When installing the collar on concrete roads, there should pouring a 8 inches width concrete ring beam and a 16 inches width guard circle around it between the collar and brick setting to make the surrounding compaction, level and unmovable. The maintenance period should be above 10 days. 3. When installing the collar on bituminous road must avoid a roller compaction by construction equipment. The collar must be installed after paving asphalt. A hole which is slightly larger than the collar should be reserved before the pavement casting. The reserved hole can help ensure the installation quality and prolong its using life. 4. For keeping a nice appearance, there should put a cover to protect the lid from stained. And the lid should be cleaned after construction the same day. 5. Open and clean up the lid to avoid the lid integrate with collar after road paved. 6. The lid should be installed on corresponding roads according to different load capacity. Flow Control Fitting: The vented flow control fitting, which is furnished with all grease interceptors, is highly important in the proper operation of the interceptor. ASME A Type A installation. The flow control should be located up stream of the interceptor and as close to the fixture that it is servicing. When installing the flow control make sure that the orifice plate side of it is installed toward the fixture and not the interceptor.
5 The flow control is also manufactured with a vent connection. Venting should be done in accordance to local building codes. Venting of the grease interceptor is important to permit air access into the drain line and the interceptor. So that when air rises in the interceptor it will bring grease with it, increasing the efficiency of the interceptor. Maintenance: A well maintained interceptor is important to keeping its high efficiency. If the interceptor is not, kept to a strict cleaning schedule, it will build up with grease and eventually allow the grease to pass directly through it. The grease interceptor should be checked after the first few days of operation, note the buildup of grease within it. Based on the amount of grease a regular cleaning schedule should be implemented to ensure that the grease buildup does not get to the point of allowing the grease laden water to pass directly through the interceptor. Following the simple steps below will help in making cleaning easier: 1. Remove the bolt(s) from the interceptor lid(s). 2. Remove the lid(s) (Take caution, the lid(s) can be heavy and slippery) 3. Remove grease from the interceptor and dispose of it in the proper waste container. 4. Check to make sure that the gasket material is still in good condition. No rips or missing pieces and that it is still in the proper position. 5. Reinstall the lid(s) and bolt(s). Troubleshooting If the unit is not working properly, start by properly maintenance the interceptor. Inspect the unit to be sure that the interceptor is properly assembled, installed and properly sized. Some issues that can be affecting the interceptor performance: A higher velocity of incoming water can reduce the efficiency. Solution: Install an additional flow control fitting at the source of the flow. The recommended maximum flow is exceeded can reduce the efficiency. Solution: Install an additional flow control fitting at the source of the flow. A high ratio of grease to water. Solution: Increase the size of the interceptor. Presence of grease cutting detergents will break the grease into small particles and allow them to pass through the interceptor. Solution: Increase the size of the interceptor.
