1 Project Green Challenge Day 22 Space: Greenest San Marcos, California PALOMAR POWER PLANT IN ESCONDIDO San Marcos is a medium-sized suburban area located in North San Diego County. San Diego Gas & Electric is the company that oversees the energy use and distribution in the area, most of which comes from natural gas power plants in neighboring Escondido. 2 Most grocery stores in San Marcos get their products from far away sources. However, there is a local Sprout s Farmer s Market that sells local products. *San Marcos also has its own weekly farmers market that allows local farmers to promote and sell their products!
3 Town Center LAKE SAN MARCOS DISCOVERY LAKE San Marcos prides itself with miles of trails, two beautiful lakes, many parks and sport complexes, and a California State University. The center of San Marcos contains many green areas that are very popular for hiking and picnics. There is no mall in San Marcos, only small shopping centers. CSUSM attracts students from all over the state of California. I believe San Marcos has a lot of potential to be a sustainable leader in San Diego County!
4 A letter to Councilwoman Sharon Jenkins: Dear Council Member Sharon Jenkins, San Marcos is an amazing city full of natural beauty. In a world where support for the environment is diminishing, San Marcos needs to be a leader in creating a more sustainable future. The creekside development area, Bradley Park, and the rooftops of many buildings have great eco-friendly potential. The creekside area provides natural resources to many different species, and the urbanization of the area would push them out of our city. It would be very difficult to appreciate natural biodiversity in San Marcos if urbanization is very unwelcoming. One way to preserve biodiversity in the creekside area is to incorporate green space in the development process. If we can plant trees and incorporate green areas where humans and species can both benefit from, San Marcos could set an example for building projects in other areas. An incorporation of solar power to the buildings should also be considered to limit energy use and offset carbon emissions. A center for the San Marcos Farmer s Market should also be considered in development to promote the consumption of locally grown produce and support local farmers. Bradley Park is a center for communal recreation in San Marcos. However, the various sport fields use an immense amount of energy to produce lighting. An incorporation os solar powered stadium lights would be much more beneficial to the planet and reduce the amount of revenue spent on energy. Solar panels can be built as shade canopies to shield citizens from the heat of the sun during the day, and provide lighting for sporting events at night. San Marcos is home to many conscious gardeners that commune at the community garden. This garden is a great step in incorporating greens to civic buildings. Since San Marcos prides itself with its natural trails and beauty, it is only appropriate that the civic centers set an example for vertical and rooftop gardening. Civic centers could grow produce along its walls and on its rooftops to integrate free spaces with ecological enrichment. A new, green design would attract attention and praise for the innovative integration of civic buildings and gardening. These innovations would offset carbon and provide an example for a sustainable city. I hope that my beautiful city of San Marcos can incorporate some of these proposals. I love this city, with its trails and lakes, and believe that it can be at the forefront of ecological innovation. I hope to receive your response. Isaac Aguilar
