1 The Boathouse Garden The boathouse garden is a landart installation garden set on a riverside location in the UK. The garden evokes memories of the place through contextual and ambient interaction of natural elements. The concept links landart, architecture and nature and aims to create an abstract, modern and playful garden which evolves with the setting. The design aim is to create a strong spatial relationship between movement and space to create an experiential show garden for slantfest. This is a garden for the senses and not just a visual show garden. The folding mounds create place and space whilst the corten steel boathouse acts as a functional architectural sculpture to add to the gardens program and sense of identity. The flexible fibre optic light beacons move with the wind and create ambient lighting to set the scene. Creating an ever changing dynamic show garden installation to reflect its natural context. The concept idea is to create a multi-layered concept in order to create a meaningful and thought provoking garden, evoking memories of the place: Garden of Movement and force The aim is to create an experiential garden that is connected to the movement and the changing natural elements of the place. The garden embeds human movement with folding mounds to create a strong spatial relationship. The seasonal meadow mounds and fibre optic lighting beacons creates a garden that is sensitive to light, wind and seasonal ambience of the riverside edge. The boathouse provides a timeless sculptural visual focus and adds to the gardens program function. Garden of experience The design aim is to evoke memories of the place through a sequence of experiential spaces created by the folding mounds and the boathouse. The sequence of folding mounds creates sequential spaces and contrasts with the riverside s meadow banks to create place. The boathouse roof garden provides an elevated roof gallery space and creates overhead views of the garden and its context. The gardens retreat seating space creates a transition space between the woodland edge and the boathouse garden. The riverside seating space creates a transition space between the riverside edge and the garden. Garden of dialogue The concept is to evoke memories of the place through its dialogue and interaction with the natural context. The light sensitive fibre optic lighting beacons represents the ever changing ambient light settings and wind conditions of the context. Folding mounds represents the main garden stepping space to the riverside. The corten steel boathouse represents the main human utility function of the garden and sits comfortably along the riverside as a timeless sculpture.
2 Garden of senses The concept aim is to create an experiential show garden to evoke memories of the place through dynamic interaction with the natural elements. Seasonal meadow mounds add seasonal texture and colour to compliment views into the riverside. Fibre optic light beacons flex and create lighting to highlight the changing wind and light conditions. Corten steel is used as a timeless man made cladding material for the boathouse sculpture to create a sense of identity. Garden of Program The design aim is to create a multi layered garden which links landart, architecture and nature. The designed program intimately connects visitors with the surrounding nature and place. The program evokes memories of the place through dynamic interaction of the contextual natural elements. The folding mounds and light beacons overlays landart program elements to the garden to create place. The boathouse introduces human utility function to the garden to compliment the land art setting of the design. Garden of seasons Spring = The pleasant clear blue skies compliments the crocus planting and amber fibre optic LED lighting to provide strong texture and complimentary colours to create riverside views. Summer = Bright sunny skies and meadows compliments the carpet of white daisies and hot coloured fibre optic LED lighting. Autumn = Dusk setting and autumn foliage colours compliments the carpet of white daisies and violet fibre optic LED lighting. Winter = Dusk setting and blue fibre optic LED lighting is complimented by clean folding mounds to create place.
