2 Dear Partners at Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, Thank you for your generous tithe to Habitat Kyrgyzstan during the fiscal year 2014! With your support we improved living conditions of 255 families in Chok Tal village, Issikul region! We are grateful for your partnership which helps us to make true the dream of bringing decent shelter to God's people in need in Kyrgyzstan!

3 Chock Tal village is situated in the north of the Issyk Kul lake and accommodates over 300 households. As in almost all rural areas of Kyrgyzstan the village was experiencing water shortage problems for many years. Water issues have not been solved even after the local water supply system with public water points in the streets was introduced by the state supported Clean Water program in Villagers stopped fetching heavy buckets of water from the nearby small mountain river, clean water from the public water points stayed in limited amount. Only three hours a day from 8am to 11am the street water points were working and the families had to rush to get enough water till next day. Mostly school children and women were engaged in daily water fetching in large heavy buckets. Chok Tal village

4 The tap stands on the streets are situated in meters far from houses, making it difficult to carry water into homes. Once water is brought into the home it is not stored in sanitary conditions at all times, which has bad effect on health of the family members. The rural management staff has difficulties in collecting water fees from the families who are refusing to pay as there is no transparent evidence of the factual waste of water by them, and this cause tensions in community. The Need of the Village

5 With donation from Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, Habitat Kyrgyzstan was able to serve these families and provide their households with individual safe drinking water system. From January 2014 Habitat Kyrgyzstan helped to 255 Chock Tal households to extend local water supply system up to their kitchen and bathrooms and installed water heaters and wash basins. Every family in the village was provided with a booklet made by Habitat Kyrgyzstan on how to use drinking water efficiently. The water meters installed in every household help families to regulate their daily water consumption. Habitat Help

6 The work starts with digging tranches from the house to the water well. The depth of the tranche should be around 60 sm to 1 meter, so the pipes will not be frozen in winter time. Then the bottom of the tranches are leveled. So the polyethylene pipes of D-25 mm are stretched out all the way along in the bottom. Digging and backfill is done by the hands of family members. The specialists install the water counter, valves, sinks and water heating boilers, and connect the house equipment to the centralized water provision system. 8 It is so good when you have hot and cold water facilities in your house during cold winter. It is easier to take care of our little daughter, to prepare food, do washings and run the household. Monthly repayments are quite affordable for retired people. We would not be able to complete all these digging, fixing and water heater installing works on our own as our monthly income based on our pension money. I would like to thank Habitat for the help and wish every success in its future projects to help ordinary families, says Zagira. Sadanbekov Kydyrmysh (65) and Zagira (61) live with their youngest daughter - 8 years old Kasiet. Kydyrmysh and Zagira are retired and receive monthly support money. Kasiet is a school girl. 9 We had to fetch water in buckets from the street water point which is about 300 meters away from our house. Additionally to that water was limited there, available in the mornings for a few hours only. Sarymsakov Nurlan (50) and Ilvira (45) live with their two sons - Bakyt (16) and Shabdan (10). Nurlan works a security guard at the local resort hotel. Ilvira is a housewife and boys attend local secondary school. Now we enjoy water facilities in our house. We are saving our energy and time. Boys have more time to play and study. It is much easier for me to run a household works. We appreciate Habitat for the help. The booklet distributed by Habitat is very informative and teach us how to use water efficiently. Monthly amount of the repayments is affordable for us. And we pay only for the amount of water we use. Installed water meters help us to regulate our need for water. Thank you, Habitat, for your help! says Ilvira. The Family of the Sarymsakovs

10 Kojokeyev Baktybek (54) and Aygul (50) live in Chock Tal village with their son, daughter in law and granddaughter. Baktybek is retired, however works as a guard at the local hotel. Also he receives support money as an Afghanistan war veteran. Aigul is a housewife. Their son Ilyaz (23) works as an operator at petrol station. He is married to Makhabat (21) and has a little daughter Rabia one year old. All my life I was fetching heavy buckets of water to my house from the small river which is almost 1 km away. Since the water points were built in the village in 2007 the situation changed a little. As our house is situated on the skirts of the village it was always difficult for us to get enough water for daily use. We had to go to the village center to get water from there. Now I enjoy my life. It is a great help for me and my family. Daily water fetching was harmful for our health. Now we live in a comfort and enjoy our happiness. 11 Moldoshev Orozbek (78) and Uken (77) live in Chock Tal village near Lake Issyk Kul. They are both retired and receive monthly support money. This project is extremely helpful for elderly people. It is getting more difficult to run a household and take care of yourselves when you got old. Now it is much easier when you do not have make daily hard work as collecting water from the water point in the street. I have more time to make other things in the house. We feel ourselves safe and thanks a lot for Habitat for taking care of us. My warm wishes and blessings to everyone who helped us, says Uken. The Family of the Moldoshevs

12 Akmatov Tilek (49) and Nurmira (38) live in Chok Tal village, Issyk Kul region. They have daughters - Nuriza (17), Seyil (15) and two sons Mirlan (13), Tamerlan (7). All children attend local secondary school. Family keeps a small live stock and Tilek is engaged in farming for own need. We feel a huge relief after we have a hot water facility in the house. Especially it is good for children and women. They do not have to rush to get enough water every morning. Any time hot water is available for children. We are not worried about water issues any more. 13 The water consumption of the villagers reduced for 30% then it was before when water was collected from the street water mains and often the tap stands were broken causing water loss. Having an individual water supply system and a water meter, the family pays only for the water fee that they factually used, and it motivates them to pay the fees regularly in time. This helps a family to plan their budget properly, and shows transparency in measuring the water waste. Consequently the local management staff has marked improvement in planning, budgeting, and monitoring of water management concerned with conservation, water purifying in reservoirs and distribution systems. The members of the rural union have been trained on construction skills, and the project specific works have been done by these local subcontractors. Currently they provide water maintenance works for their community to ensure smooth operation of water system in their villages. BENEFITS AFTER CONSTRUCTION
