3 Partnerships Partnership Description Time Frame Audubon Acres To work with Audubon Acres on various garden projects, with the potential to restore the old homestead gardens on the property. MGs and Interns may volunteer at any time via the Food Bank contacts. The Chair of this committee is the go-between for the Food Bank and the MGs. The goal is to distribute information to the MGs about when and where the gardens are, then to recruit members to staff each garden on the tour in 2- hour shifts. Seasonal Dates TBD each year TBA All communication is done via . Chattanooga Arboretum and Nature Center (CANC) This is a large area of land dedicated to natives and the natural habitat. 5 Partnership Description Time Frame Cumberland Friends on the Cumberland Ongoing Seeds Trails (FCT) seed collection Project and and restoration project that Trailhead includes a native plant nursery Nursery on Signal Mountain with volunteer opportunities in hands on native plant propagation. Volunteer opportunities are on Wednesdays, Fridays and some Saturdays. Check with contact person before going. Contacts Terri Ballinger Sally Wencel Projects Project Description Time Frame Contacts Alpine Crest Outdoor Learning Center and Gardens Aquarium Hummingbird & Butterfly Garden The restoration of an outdoor classroom and nature trail and will be adding raised beds, butterfly garden, bird feeding stations and various fruit trees. This is one of our core projects that takes all MGs who can help. Two to four times a year, we officially work to plant, weed, fertilize, add mulch and spruce up this garden. It is a very public place with our name on it. Volunteers may go at any time to pull weeds, deadhead plants and remove any debris from the garden. 6 Project Description Time Frame Contacts Bonny Oaks Arboretum This group maintains the Arboretum around the present Agriculture Extension Center on Bonny Oaks Drive. Project members maintain the grounds area, identify trees and work to make sure the area qualifies as an arboretum. Volunteer opportunities vary. Contact the coordinator for details. Jim Davenport Chattanooga Zoo Christ United Methodist Community Gardens Restoring the existing gardens within the Zoo, such as the Desert Garden, Forest, Butterfly Garden, and H&H Gardens. Adding any new garden if needed. Assist with planting, tending and harvest ten raised garden beds. The produce from these gardens are donated to Bethel Village, The Community Kitchen, and Chattanooga Food Bank. 7 Project Description Time Frame Contacts Hamilton Seasonal County Fair The Chair and Co-Chair of this committee coordinate County Fair exhibits, theme development, build-day for exhibits, volunteer activities and schedules. The Chair coordinates with County Fair Director for exhibit location, exhibit tents, electric and water needs, parking for volunteers, and advertising. To serve as Chair or Co- Chair, good people skills and organizational ability are needed to coordinate the completion of multiple exhibits using people with diverse skill levels. The Chair and Co- Chair must be certified MGs Volunteers are needed to build and staff the County Fair exhibit. Chair and Co- Chair: May through the Fair Volunteers: As scheduled David Hopkins Bertha Livingston Ivy Academy Consultant at Ivy Academy for two on-campus gardens on proper growing methods, soil improvement, garden maintenance and educational opportunities with garden classes for approximately twenty students. Volunteers are asked to join committees, seek out and enlist vendors, help with demonstrations, and promote the show to Chattanooga residents and surrounding areas. The EXPO is a Spring event. 8 Project Description Time Frame Contacts Siskin Children s Garden Ongoing The Siskin Early Learning Centers develop and promote early childhood education and early intervention in an inclusive society for children of all abilities. The Master Gardener will help with the education and teaching of various gardening projects. An orientation class at Siskin is required for all volunteers. 9 s Description Time Frame Bud Sprout Purpose: Extend the intern mentoring after the master Gardener Classes are completed. Goal: Improve the intern retention and certification through the first year by matching interns (Sprouts) with an experienced Master Gardener (Bud). This committee works with the intern mentor chairperson to communicate and promote the Bud Sprout activities throughout the intern classes. The chairperson will recruit certified MG (Buds) and interns (Sprouts) to the program. The committee should work with the board and the intern mentor committee prior to classes starting to have a plan for the upcoming class. This committee has been responsible for the increase in retention of our interns over the past few years and this should be an encouragement for all to help. This committee should have at least three members. Reports annually to the Board. Contact: TBA Budget and Finance Purpose: Prepare an annual budget for the Hamilton County Master Gardener Association. Goal: maintain current and accurate financials for the Hamilton County Master Gardener Association. The annual budget is presented to the board for approval and membership. The treasurer dutifully executes the budget. The treasurer needs to have the financial skills to keep accurate financial records, prepare timely reports and any other requirements as identified and directed by the Board. Anyone who has an interest in financial matters would be able to serve in the position of treasurer. There should be at least one member of this committee who is not an officer and who could be in training for the position of treasurer. The consists of five members: Treasurer, President, Vice President, Secretary, and Past President. Reports monthly to the Board and general membership Contact: Chairperson- Treasurer - 9 -
10 Description Time Frame Certification Purpose: Maintain and certify the volunteer hours completed by the Master Gardeners. Goal: Keep accurate, up-to-date records and encourage all master gardeners to certify each year. Reports monthly to the Board and UT Extension Service This committee serves a critical and necessary function for our organization in making sure we certify as many members as possible each year. Keeping up with volunteer hours is a major asset for the Extension Service each year. Contact: Certification Officer Communication This committee interacts with the treasurer and membership person each year in preparing the annual directory. The committee needs people to serve who have good people skills and the ability to maintain good records. This committee should have at least three members and is currently operating with only one. HIGH NEED. Purpose: Provide adequate and timely communications to the Master Gardener organization. Goal: Make sure every member of the Master Gardener organization is well informed with the happenings of the organization. This committee is responsible for the newsletter, website, Yahoo group, the Master Gardener Directory, Historian, and publishing. Each of these areas has its own committee. The chairperson of each area is a member of the overall communication committee. There are job descriptions for each of the subcommittees and these are available to anyone who has an interest in serving in either of these areas. Staffing of each of the subcommittees is challenging and needs the help of the board and membership at large. This committee needs seven members: Chairperson, Cochair, and the chairperson of each subcommittee. Reports annually and as needed to the Board Budgeted committee Contact: Communication Officer
11 Description Time Frame Education Purpose: Provide educational opportunities for the members and the community at large. Goal: Provide ongoing education classes for the Master Gardeners and the general public. Classes will be held every third Saturday morning of each month in the Extension office. The committee will also use facilities at our partner locations such as the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Reflection Riding, and the Library. The committee will also participate, at various times, in other education venues when invited as scheduling permits. The Education will work closely with the Speakers Bureau to coordinate the educational requests from Hamilton County organizations for gardening purposes. Some classes will have fees and will be limited in numbers but all classes will have a registration form on the website. Reports Annually and as needed to the Board and the Project committee. Budgeted committee Contact: Education Chairperson Hospitality This committee will consist of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and members who are interested in furthering the educational goal of MGHC. Purpose: Provide a welcoming atmosphere, with refreshments when appropriate, at monthly meetings and other functions that encompass the entire Master Gardener group. Goal: Plan and prepare food items for the monthly meetings and other functions that include the entire Master Gardener group. This committee plans for food or snacks for meetings involving our Master Gardener group. This includes shopping for the food, set up, and clean up at each function. Any expense receipts are turned in for reimbursement. Anyone serving on this committee needs good people skills and the ability to organize these functions. Keeping good records is another important part of the committee s function. The committee has provided an article for our newsletter each month. This committee needs 3 members. No reports required; Requests help as needed. Budgeted committee Contact: Hospitality Chairperson
12 Description Time Frame Intern Mentors Purpose: Support the initial training of interns for the duration of their 16-week Master Gardener class. Master Gardeners of Hamilton County Handbook Organizational (Phase II) Goal: Assure that the interns become active and certified Master Gardeners. We are trying to increase our percentage of certifications each year. You must be certified as a Master Gardener and in good standing to serve on this project. This is a seasonal project that lasts through the 16-week training and each class needs 5 7 volunteers to assist the coordinator at each class meeting. Purpose: Provide our membership with information about the various partnerships, core projects, individual projects, and committees within the organization. Goal: Help all Master Gardeners find their place of service. The Phase II Handbook Organizational collects and provides membership with information about the various committees within the organization, including the committee s purpose, who may serve on the committee, and the obligations the committee has to the Master Gardeners of Hamilton County and the community at large. Every Master Gardeners of Hamilton County member is encouraged to get a copy of the Handbook so they will be better able to find their place of service. The Master Gardeners of Hamilton County organization is strengthened only by the participation of all its members. With this level of participation, we are guaranteeing the future perpetuation of Master Gardeners of Hamilton County. Seasonal 16 weeks during the annual Master Gardener class Reports annually and as needed to the Board. 13 Description Time Frame Nominating Purpose: Recruit certified, involved Master Gardeners who are willing to serve in various positions within our organization. Goal: Keep the various committees staffed and seek qualified and willing persons to serve. This is an ongoing process. This committee is active year round filling the various positions in our organization as needed and to make sure we are getting new people involved as soon as they are qualified to serve. We have positions to serve on our board, officers, and various committees, including our project committees. The chairperson will interview the recommended prospects for each position with the help of the other committee members. To serve on this committee, one needs good people skills, willingness to work with the various committee persons and officers of the organization and have working understanding of the Master Gardener organization and membership. The project leaders assist the committee by recommending qualified persons to work on their projects. Each member of the organization can assist the committee by recommending people to serve and be willing to serve when asked. This committee has five members: Chairperson, Assistant Chairperson, three members at large, and president as exofficio member. Reports annually for officer nominations and as needed for other openings. Contact: Nominating Chairperson
14 Description Time Frame Project Purpose: Review all Master Gardener project requests. A project request form is completed and submitted for review to make sure the request meets the guidelines as outlined on the Master Gardeners of Hamilton County website. The committee will also investigate the merits of the proposed projects as it relates to the overall purpose of the Master Gardener program. Goal: Ensure we have an adequate number of projects and that each project fulfills the overall purpose of the Master Gardener program. This committee is responsible for reviewing all projects on an annual basis and submitting an annual report to the Board. The committee sends each project committee chairperson a report form to complete and return. This gives the committee valuable information as to how this project is impacting our community. This information is give to the Board and becomes a permanent record of the organization. This committee would like to see more projects involving education, training, and assistance in maintaining the integrity of the Master Gardener program. Good projects are the lifeblood of our volunteer program for the Master Gardeners. This committee has three members. Each member must be a certified Master Gardener. Reports monthly to the Board on any pending projects and annually to the Board and membership on all projects. Contact: Project Chairperson
15 Description Time Frame Speakers Bureau Purpose: Provide speakers on request to civic organizations, schools, churches, and community clubs. Goal: Promote the educational and informational side of the Master Gardener organization. The speakers are furnished on request and speakers are provided from a pool of Master Gardener speakers. A request is filled when asked, however we try not to send a speaker to the same organization more than three times per year. Skills needed to serve are the ability to organize and recruit a pool of speakers on various topics, and the ability to communicate with the different organizations and the Master Gardener membership. The Board can assist this committee in helping develop a pool of speakers. This committee is party of the overall Education committee. This committee has three members. Each member must be a certified Master Gardener. Reports annually to the Board Contact: Chairperson
