6 ABOUT LENAWEE CONSERVATION DISTRICT Lenawee Conservation District holds an annual meeting in January to present the annual report and provide information on the programs and projects that are available to residents in Lenawee County. Center for Excellence On-farm demonstration plots show the economics of using conservation tillage and the latest technology available to farmers. Two family farms are demonstration sites during field day activities. One in Clayton on highly erodible soil demonstrates using various tillage systems and a closed loop waste water wetland sub-irrigation system. The Seneca farm demonstrates the newest technology available to landowners/farmers. A Field Day is hosted in August to view the in-field research and a Yield Results Meeting is held in January to review data. Farm Bill Pheasants Restoration Initiative & Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Through a state-wide initiative partnering state agencies and various wildlife organizations, landowners have the opportunity to establish local cooperatives of high quality habitat. Landowners are encouraged to install filter strips, windbreaks, riparian buffers, wetland restorations, water and sediment control basins, grass plantings on highly erodible land to curtail erosion, protect surface water, improve water quality, and increase wildlife habitat. This program is offered for properties in Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, and Washtenaw Counties. Hunting Access Program (HAP) The Hunting Access Program offers landowners payment and liability protection through Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in exchange for providing hunters limited access to their property. Property owners can allow all species hunting or specify which species can be hunted on their property during the appropriate hunting season. Property owners can also limit the number of hunters allowed at one time on the property. Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assessment Program (MAEAP) District technicians work with farmers to protect water quality. Farmers assess their own farming operation through a series of A-Systs to determine whether they need to improve some of their practices or if they are already taking the necessary precautions to keep contaminants out of their wells and water courses.
