3 NATIVE WETLAND PLANTS Native herbaceous wetland plants provide the backbone of any successful wetland restoration project. Most grow rapidly via vegetative methods and seed readily. Planting a diverse group of species with similar hydrological adaptability most often produces profound results in the 1st growing season. Please find below the currently available seed sown, nursery grown containerized natives. These plants are available for immediate resale or installation into wet meadows, riparian corridors or other ecologically sensitive areas where biodiversity is essential. KEY TO SYMBOLS OBL : Obligate Wetland Species: Occur almost always (estimated probability >99%) under natural conditions in wetlands. FACW: Facultative Wetland Species: Usually occur in wetlands (estimated probability 67% - 99%), but occasionally found in non-wetlands. FAC : Facultative Species: Equally likely to occur in wetlands or non-wetlands (estimated probability 34% - 66%). FACU : Facultative Upland Species: Usually occur in non-wetlands but occasionally found in wetlands (estimated probability 1% - 33%. UPL: Obligate Upland Species: Almost always occur (estimated probability>99%) under natural conditions in non-wetlands. NI : No Indicator: Lack of information to determine indicator status. (A positive sign [+] indicates more of a frequency to be found in wetlands and a negative sign [-] indicates less of a frequency to be found in wetlands). 6 WATER LILIES (N YMPHAEA) The Native White Water Lily (N. odorata) we offer is of local provenance and adapts well to the colder climate of the Northeastern United States. Bare roots are offered seasonally and large specimen sizes are typically available upon request. Bare roots are most easily shipped and installed. N. odorata spreads rapidly in unconsolidated soils in waters up to 3' deep via rhizome and seed. Water lilies and other floating leaf aquatics provide essential shade and cover for pond edges where algae and potentially undesirable species would otherwise dominate. BOTANICAL NAME Nymphaea odorata COMMON NAME SIZE PRICE White water lily # Plug 1.50 QT 3.00 BR 2.50 LoTUS (NELUMBO) The American lotus Nelumbo lutea is a large, bold, dramatic plant with a huge flower and interesting seedpod. Nelumbo lutea is capable of growing in water up to 6' deep and can spread 20' per year. These attributes may bring pleasure or pain. Use common sense when installing these plants in earth bottom ponds. Our finished plants are available in 4-gallon hole-less containers from May through November. Bare root tubers are available only in April/May via preorders. BOTANICAL NAME Nelumbo lutea COMMON NAME American Lotus SIZE 4 gal. BR PRICE SPATTERDOCK (NUPHAR) The yellow flowering Spatterdock is a common native lily-like floating leaf aquatic perennial found in quiet waters throughout the U.S. Although only recognized by botanists as a genus with a single species (Nuphar lutea), the species contains 9 recognized sub species, which vary considerably in morphology in both flower & structure. This plant is most commonly utilized in wetland restoration for deep-water sites. Nuphar seeds freely and can spread rapidly in earth ponds up to 3' deep. BOTANICAL NAME COMMON NAME SIZE PRICE Nuphar lutea Spatterdock # Plug 1.20 QT
7 SuBMERGENT AQUATIC VEGETATION ( SAV) Submergent aquatics form the foundation of a balanced aquatic ecosystem. SAV function as a biological particulate & chemical filter while providing critical cover and oxygen for countless invertebrates & the predators that consume them. Submergents are sold as bare root items in season. Some species may be available as "tubers" or "resting buds" for dormant plantings in cooler months. Propagation is via vegetative or from tissue culture sources only - our ferns are NOT wild collected. Check our website for the most current availability or call to request a fax list.
