3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Bio-Engineering The use of bioengineering methods dates back to 12th century China, when brush bundles were used to stabilize slopes. In the early 20th century, similar techniques were used in China to control flooding and erosion along the Yellow River. In Europe, especially Germany, bioengineering methods have been used for over 150 years. Documented use of bioengineering in the United States dates to the 1920s and 30s. Streambank stabilization, timber access road stabilization and slope restoration were common applications. After World War II, with increased access to earth-moving equipment and the development of new structural slope stabilization and erosion control methods, bioengineering practices all but disappeared. In the last 20 years bioengineering has been recognized as a re-emerging technique to provide erosion control, environmentally sound design and aesthetically pleasing structures. Gray and Leiser (1982) published the first U.S. textbook on bioengineering: Biotechnical Slope Protection and Erosion Control. 3 3

4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Global erosion control has never been more important. As global soil erosion continues too decimate 12 to 15 million acres (approximately 5 to 6 million hectares) of land per year, the cost to society in repair work, loss of land productivity, and sediment cleanup have escalated well into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Environmental concern over the last few decades has created a greater awareness of the need to preserve nature for future generations. New concepts, ideas, technology and processes have been adopted and engaged to achieve this goal. Hence, the use of bio-engineering and environmental friendly products in construction practices have gained wider acceptance. The new wave of bio-engineering development in the global market, especially the developed nations, creates great opportunity to MTS Fibromat (M) Sdn. Bhd. 4 4

5 CORE BUSINESS - PRODUCTS & SERVICES MTS Fibromat (M) Sdn. Bhd. is a Manufacturer of Erosion Control Products from agricultural waste such as, paddy straw, palm oil empty fruit brunches fibers and coir fibers. 10 Fibromat Stormwater, Urban Heat Phenomenon Buildings and pavement made of dark materials absorb the sun's rays instead of reflecting them away, causing the temperature of the surfaces and the air around them to rise. Smog is created by photochemical reactions of pollutants in the air. These reactions are more likely to occur and intensify at higher temperatures Green Roof for Green Cities Commercial, Industrial, Institutional Green Roof helps to improve urban environmental quality through reduction of stormwater runoff and the addition of green space. It can be intergrated into a proposed or existing project to help stormwater management requirements and designed with multiple benefits such as improvements in air quality and habitat re-creation. Advantages of Green Roofs Stormwater management retain 50% - 90% of a typical rain fall on the roof, reduces stormwater runoff so there is less water directed into storm drains Reduce the surface temperature of a roofing membrane Improves building s energy efficiency Cool the surrounding air. One answer to the Urban Heat Island problem A green roof will provide substantial noise insulation that can reduce impact of noise to area below the roof. A living roof provides additional land area, allowing for more biological diversity. Respirate oxygen into the air by absorbing airborne toxins Enhances building s appearance Add space for tenant use and recreation Green roofs will intercept 15-90% of rooftop runoff. Absorption of runoff into a green roof system will vary between 50-60% and is related to the type of growing medium and plant cover variability. Good phosphor nutrition is a key factor in law establishment. Let the micro-organisms help you with it. A blooming wild flower meadow.
