1 AGM Trial of Garden Pinks 2008 There were no recommendations for the Award of Garden Merit following assessment of the 2008 trial. Trial Notes Assessment on 11 June 2008 Objective: Judging: To assess, compare and demonstrate a range of cultivars submitted by nurseries and individuals and to recommend the Award of Garden Merit. The Border Carnation & Pinks Trials Sub-committee assessed the trial on the 11 th & 17 th June and 2 nd July They used a scoring system out of 20 points, based on the following criteria: Plant growth (max 5 points) Floriferousness (max 5 points) Flower size/form/colour (max 5 points) Perfume (max 5 points) The Sub-committee also visited the trial on the 3 rd September to inspect and score the late season foliage, and to review the awards that had been recommended during the summer. Meteorological Report and Findings: December 2007, January and March 2008 were all significantly wetter than the long term averages. In contrast, February 2008 was drier than average but also proved to be the sunniest on Wisley's records with hours of sunshine - the long term average being 70.7 hours. Although April was around average for rainfall and temperature, 2-3 inches of snow fell on Sunday 6 th April and the particularly stormy weather on Monday 10 th April 2008 forced Wisley Garden to be closed to visitors. Final Report for Trial No Garden Pinks
2 Whilst May had above average rainfall and temperatures, there were some severe ground frosts and low air temperatures in the later half of the month. June was drier, sunnier and slightly warmer than average and although July saw much less rain than last year, it still had more than average rainfall. The weather in August was average. The flowering display was a little later than last year with the first flowers being produced in early May and most of the plants being in full flower by mid June. Due to poor performance, the Sub-Committee agreed that 'Widecombe Fair' should continue to be considered as a candidate for AGM removal at the AGM review in 2012: 'Margaret Taylor' and 'Anders Cherry Ripe' were grown side by side for comparison purposes and were found to be different: 'Anders Cherry Ripe' Broader calyx than 'Margaret Taylor' (may be due to extra petals). Erect foliage habit, broader leaves. No perfume. Flowers looked slightly more double. Flowered from 24 June 2008 'Margaret Taylor' Elongated flower buds, had a more spreading habit, stamens visible. No perfume. Flowered from 15 May The Border Carnation and Pinks Trials Sub-committee did not recommend the Award of Garden Merit to any garden pinks this year. Records: For each entry a record was made of the date flowering started and the 50% flowering date. Entries: There were 46 entries in this Long Term trial, of which 26 already hold the AGM. Entries were submitted as plants raised from cuttings. Cultivation: The site was prepared and entries were planted in autumn 2007 in blocks of four plants per entry, at 45cm apart. The following top dressings were applied on 23 rd March 2008 soil analysis: Ammonium sulphate for nitrogen at a rate of 30g/m 2. Sulphate of potash for potassium at 240g/m 2 Triple superphosphate for phosphorus at 70g/ m 2 Kieserite for magnesium at 160g/m 2 When the soil was tested in February 2008, the ph of this site was 7.5. This was considered a little high but the use of sulphate based fertilisers should help reduce this, therefore no other action was required. The plants were sprayed with a protective fungicide every 4 weeks and sprayed against aphid as necessary.
