2 RHS Trial of Median Bearded Iris Introduction to Median Bearded Iris Median Bearded Iris has classes of bearded Iris measuring up to a maximum 28 tall. Median Iris tolerate the extremes of winter better than Tall bearded, and withstand windy conditions better. They include all of the following groups: Miniature Dwarf Bearded Irises (MDB), up to 8 tall Standard Dwarf Bearded Irises (SDB), 8 to 16 tall Intermediate Bearded Irises (IB), 16 to 28 tall Miniature Tall Bearded Irises (MTB), 16 to 28 tall Border Bearded Irises (BB), 16 to 28 tall Objectives To assess, compare and demonstrate a range of cultivars submitted by individuals, raisers and nurserymen, following preliminary assessment by the Joint Iris subcommittee. Judging Entries were judged by the Iris subcommittee using a points system assessing the following attributes: Plant 35%, Stem 15%, Flower 30%, Presentation 20% Entries There were 100 entries in the trial, 22 of which were previous AGM winners and these were included by way of a display, point of reference and as a review of the existing AGM s. This trial had been initially started in 2008 on the Trial field at Wisley, and but had suffered bacterial root rot despite attempts to manage the problem. The Committee agreed to stop the trial and have it replanted in the Deer s Farm trials area in Cultivation Prior to planting the trial site was rotovated and treaded ready for plants. The Trial was planted in July/ August 2009 from either existing or newly submitted material at 60cm stations in rows 90cm apart; four plants of each entry were requested and grown. In the spring of each year a top dressing of ammonium sulphate and sulphate of potash was applied to increase nutrient availability. Each spring, once the main threat of frost has passed, the dead foliage of the previous year is removed. Overhead sprinklers were used for watering as required. 2

3 Plants receiving AGMs during Trial The following are the plants thought to fulfil the Award of Garden Merit criteria during the trial and to be worthy of receiving the award. The criteria which a plant needs to fulfil in order to receive the award are: excellent for ordinary use in appropriate conditions available of good constitution essentially stable in form and colour reasonably resistant to pests or disease Hardiness ratings are as follows: H4 hardy throughout the British Isles Plants Awarded AGM Iris Thruppence (Sdg W26; BNIL) AGM (H4) 2011 [Trial No. 13] Votes 7-2 Standards and falls are Yellow (8a) edges fading to centre; height 35-40cm.
