2 talk of the town Our Platinum Green Hawker Centre Our new hawker centre has a Platinum Green Mark Award! he BCA Green Mark Awards evaluate buildings for their environmental impact and performance. BCA noted these features: It will enjoy estimated annual energy savings of 635,442 kwh and water savings of 57,124 m3. It s naturally ventilated with adjustable louvres. Lights and fans are energy efficient. It optimises daylight with sun pipes and daylight sensors. A rainwater harvesting system and plumbing with excellent water efficiency. Sustainable products were extensively used in building the Centre. It has vertical green walls and food waste recycling plans. Visitors noted these features: his is our third visit here and we find the food very good... and reasonably priced! Several dishes are below $3! When you eat here, you can actually choose to have two different dishes for what you d pay for one dish elsewhere! I come a couple of times a week, but my parents come more often because our flat s nearby.he food is good, particularly the prawn noodles. And it s very affordable! eatures of Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre and Market he centre has new facilities and features to accommodate the needs of different users for more pleasant dining at the cooked food level and grocery shopping at the market level. amily-friendly facilities are also incorporated in the centre such as family rooms equipped with nursing and diaper changing facilities, family cum handicapped toilets, a pro-family dining corner and child-height wash hand basins. he cooked food level is equipped with a High Volume Low Speed (HVLS) fan to aid the ventilation at the dining area. he centre also has a higher seating capacity 18 seats per stall. Other features include a centralised dishwashing area and tray return to facilitate table cleaning. he layout of market slab stalls and lock-up stalls is designed to create a dry and airy market environment. he market stalls are bigger as compared to the existing wet market to allow a wider variety of products to be sold. A service corridor at the back of the stalls lets stall holders load and unload market produce behind the stalls. his helps to keep the stall frontage clean and dry. here is also a sundry store at the market level to complement items not sold at the stalls to provide a greater variety of products. 3 Home Improvement Programme An HIP with EASE has been completed for flats in Blocks 101 to 111 Gangsa Road and Blocks 112, 113 and 115 Pending Road. he enhanced Home Improvement Programme (HIP) now comes with the Enhancement for Active Seniors (EASE) which improves the safety and comfort of seniors living in HDB flats by making things safer and easier for them. his HIP included essential improvements fully funded by the government, such as the repair of spalling concrete and installation of a new clothes-drying rack, together with highly subsidised optional improvements, selected by the homeowner, such as bathroom renovation and new front door and/or grille. Safety for seniors In additon, under EASE, homeowners can have anti-slip bathroom floors, and ramps and grab bars installed. alk of the own visited Mrs Edith de Souza and Mdm Samsia who both chose to have some EASE options included in their renovations. It s a bargain. he package is good said Mrs de Souza. And all the work was completed in ten days. I was impressed by the workers. hey worked hard in all the dust and grime. hey were very disciplined. And helpful. And I liked the way we were forewarned. We were told beforehand just what they would do each day. hat s a big help. Very pleased with the quality of the improvements and the care everyone took in doing their work, Mrs de Souza had two suggestions for making HIP an even better programme: (1) If there are two bathrooms in a flat, improve them one at one time instead of shutting down both at the same time. (2) Offer complete rewiring as an optional extra. Since we re renovating, we could get all the dusty jobs done in one go! he dust is the biggest problem. It gets everywhere, she said. 4 talk of the town Growing riendships he target was for every RC to have a Community Garden. Now they are so popular, more and more Community Gardens are being built. And more and more residents are building new friendships. At the vegetable garden at Block 630 Senja Road, Mr Lim Ming Chen, the RC member in charge, took the advice of vegetable farmers in Lim Chu Kang and decided to cover the garden with netting. Mdm Neo said her brother was a big help to everybody working in the garden as he actually grew up in Lim Chu Kang. We get friends to share plants we can grow. Mr Ang Cheng Lay says they try not to use chemicals in the 630 garden. It s very interesting, learning the way different veggies grow. I never realized how much care they need! And he liked the way he was able to get to know his neighbours at the garden. Meet them on the lift and you don t really have a chance to talk. 5 he garden at Block 180A Lompang Road started with 17 gardeners in It s proved so popular the own Council has just built another, next to it. We have 20 gardeners here now and we ll have 50 more after the sign-up for the new garden, said Mr David Yeo, the RC member in charge. here s no netting here. No bees, no cucumbers, no winter melons! he said. At the community garden at Block 136 Petir Road, Linda Ng, Jimmy Lee and a team of gardening enthusiasts concentrate their efforts on herbs and some flowers... to attract the bees. If you love them, they are happy, and they grow. said Jimmy. he gardeners here work as a team. No individual has a plot. And the herbs, who gets them? hey are given to anyone who asks. Our work has no economic benefit. It is our passion. Without passion nothing grows, says Linda. Coming up A new garden at Block 144 Petir Road has just been built by the own Council and will be opened in July. It has plots for about 50 enthusiasts. And a small garden at Block 602 Senja Road is waiting for residents to take it over. If you re interested in making some new friends, apply at the RC Centre at Block 139 or 607. 6 talk of the town in Zhenghua Running from Blocks 503 and 506 to the bus stop on Jelapang Road, this 300 metre covered walkway took a year to build. Much appreciated by all residents in the area, particularly those with children attending Greenridge Primary School and patrons of the Greenridge Shopping Centre. Last December the own Council completed a temporary footpath and steps to connect the LA s covered linkway on Jalan Jurong Kechil to an existing footpath in front of Block 1. Now oh Yi residents can enjoy a paved shortcut that connects them with the bus stop, market, hawker centre, nearby HDB shophouses and the new Beauty World MR station! All this was achieved while conserving the pleasant greenery that grows on the reserve land at the northeast corner of oh Yi estate. 7 Upgraded Ghim Moh Market It s roomier! It s airier! And my favourite food stall is just where it always was!! hat s what customers are saying. 9 out of 10 of the stallholders came back after the renovations and the cooked food stallholders came back to their old locations. or your convenience. he whole place is wheelchair-friendly now. Including the shops around the market. Over $0.5m was spent at Blocks 19 and 21 to extend the shop-front awnings with better lighting, new flooring and wider walkways. or your convenience.
